This marks the sixth Annual Commencement Exercises of Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law, which was chartered by the New York State Board of Regents in 1974 and opened in September 1976. The Law School is committed to excellence-making a contribution to society, legal education, and the profession. Its course of study, leading to the Doctor of Law (J.D.) degree, prepares students for both traditional and emerging forms of professional legal practice as well as for positions in business, public service, and other areas where a legal education has relevance.
Yeshiva University1s commitment to quality together with its renowned scholarship in the Judaic heritage are a strong foundation for a law school shaped by tradition yet able to blend the past with the complex requirements of modern society.
The Law School was named to honor the memory of the late distinguished jurist who, as Chief Judge of the New York State Court of Appeals and then as Associate Justice of the United States Supreme Court, established a tradition of excellence in the law. The School's purpose is to achieve the great goals of legal education articulated by Justice Cardozo in 1935: "We are trying to teach law and to study it scientifically, and yet imaginatively too-feeling our way to a new sense of its significance, of the forces that have brought it into being, of the processes that are keeping it alive, and of the ends that it must serve and foster if its high potencies are not to fail."
In recognition of the vital role of the library in the education of the law student, the Law School has developed a facility to rank among the outstanding legal libraries. The three-level, 45,000-square-foot Lillian and Rebecca Chutick Law Library houses over 200,000 volumes, including collections of statutes, reports, digests, and periodicals. Major holdings include the Barry Schreiber Law Library and the Louis and Ida Shlansky Family Foundation Collection of Jewish and Israeli Law.
Honoring by name those whose benefactions have contributed substantially to the founding and development of Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law are: Brookdale Foundation; Lillian and Rebecca Chu tick Law Library; Jacob Burns Moot Court; Sidney Weisner Lecture Hall; Furst Faculty Lounge, donated by Melvin J. and Gerald Furst; Fay Rotenberg
21
Student Lounge; Tonkin Lecture Hall; library reading areas: Joseph M. and Dorothy Drexler, Joe and Celia Weinstein; and a growing number of Cardozo Fellows.
The Dr. Samuel Belkin Chair in Law and Society memorializes the late president of Yeshiva University who died in April 1976. A distinguished educator of more than 35 years of service and the founder of Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law, he established the Law School and appointed the late Monrad G. Paulsen as its first dean.
Other chairs have also been established to help ensure the quality of instruction and scholarship at the School: the Joseph and Sadie Danciger Chair in Law; Max Freund Chair in Advocacy and Litigation; Dr. Herman George and Kate Kaiser Chair in Constitutional Law, held by Prof. Telford Taylor; and Herbert and Florence Tenzer Chair in Jewish Law and Ethics, held by Dr. J. David Bleich.
The Alexander Fellows Program, established in 1982 under a gift from the Bertha and Richard G. Alexander Foundation, offers students the opportunity to serve as student clerks in the chambers of distinguished federal and state jurists.
A substantial gift from Jacob Burns, augmented by a challenge grant from the Horace Goldsmith Foundation, has allowed the establishment of the Jacob Burns Scholars Program.
The Harry Koeppel Memorial Lectureship was established in 1983, with New York City Comptroller Harrison J. Goldin the first incumbent.
Another major component of the Law School is its broad spectrum of student publications, including the Cardozo Law Review, Arts and Entertainment Law Journal, Women's Annotated Legal Bibliography, and the Cardozo Law Forum. Student sponsored activities include voluntary competition of the Jacob Burns Moot Court, the Arts arid Entertainment Law/Moot Court Competitions, and the Student Bar Association.
