My name is Mr. Chapman, and I am a music teacher at Isaac Newton Academy. I studied Music, Physics and German for my A Levels as these were subjects that I really enjoyed. I knew that I wanted to be a teacher, but didn’t know which subject I wanted to teach so kept my options as open as possible between Physics and Music.

After a lot of thinking and weighing up pros and cons, I decided that I wanted to do instrumental teaching. I applied to Goldsmiths, University of Southampton, University of East Anglia and University of Hertfordshire and several music conservatoires. I got conditional offers from Southampton, East Anglia and Hertfordshire and, after speaking to many

teachers and older peers, I decided on Southampton.

At Southampton I studied music, which towards the end of my course I was able to tailor towards my preferred topics – performing and composing. The course was a fantastic opportunity to network and meet other like-minded musicians, and being in Southampton meant that there were always loads of bands and performing opportunities. I joined several of the University bands, which resulted in me performing at the North Sea Jazz festival in Rotterdam, alongside other musicians like Jamie Cullum, Sting and Santana.

After my degree course, I started my PGCE at the University of Greenwich, but withdrew due to illness and deciding that the time wasn’t right for me. I spent some time recovering, and then did a year and a half as a Learning Support Assistant, in a secondary school, working with some amazingly inspiring students. I restarted my PGCE at the University of Middlesex in 2016, and ended up in my dream job at Isaac Newton Academy.

The one piece of advice that I would give to myself when I was 16 is that things happen for a reason. Something negative might happen that seems like the end of the world, but later on down the line it could end up being the best thing that could have happened. When I fell ill, I thought that it would be the end of my teaching career, but looking back on it, that is the point where my actual teaching career truly started.

Thanks for reading, and the best of luck to all students applying to universities next year!

INA students are exposed to many excellent teachers, speakers and opportunities, so when someone comes along and makes a truly exceptional impact on the students, there must be something quite special about them. Cyril Moloney, who gave a talk as part of the Speakers Programme on Tuesday 7th November, is indeed an exceptional person.

Cyril calls himself a ‘curious’, rather than an ‘electrical’ engineer, and during his talk he demonstrated that curiosity, along with his passion for learning, to our Sixth Form audience. Cyril has had to deal with health and learning challenges and it is a testament to his grit and hard work that from such a start he has gone on to attain a good degree, become a successful teacher and participated in the development of such a life-changing technology as MRI scanners.

As well as talking to us about his work as an engineer and part-time lecturer, Cyril shared the story behind the development of some highly promising research being conducted in the field of cancer treatment, specifically chemotherapy.

Cyril’s life illustrates the necessity for resilience, perseverance and flexibility in order to successfully achieve your goals. Students were very impressed with his attitude to rejection. Cyril’s reaction to being told ‘No’ to anything he truly wants is to ask what he needs to do to get the ‘Yes’, and to then go away and do it. An invaluable lesson about persistence.

Cyril emphasised his view that chasing material success rather than personal fulfilment, or qualifications rather than actual learning, is not the best path to happiness. The most frequently used adjective when students were asked what they had made of the talk was ‘inspirational’.

Cyril really enjoyed his visit and hopes to return to INA again soon. He will be sending information over about various STEM opportunities which will be shared with our Sixth Form students.

Speakers’ ProgrammeCyril Moloney- 7th November 2017

“He really spoke to me.”

Alex, Year 12

“Cyril was unbelievable: he’s dyslexic, has epilepsy, and is on the Autism spectrum – what he’s achieved with his

life has changed my perception of life completely. What a legend!”

Reuben, Year 12

“The school was fabulous, one of the best I have attended. I was made very welcome. I am hoping to add INA to the list of schools I visit regularly. It was inspiring how the Year 12 students assist younger students.” Cyril Moloney, Curious Engineer

Visiting a trade show or career fair?See below our best networking tips!

When you are networking or attending an event you need to ensure that you are prepared both physically and mentally. Ask yourself “what do I want to get out of this?”. The steps below will help you to look and feel your best on the day.

‘Fail to prepare, prepare to fail!’Before the Show:1. Bring:• Plenty of copies of your up-to-date CV• A notebook and pen• A folder to collate any information given to you at the event

2. Do your research:• What companies are attending?• What opportunities do they have? What are they looking for?• View attendees on LinkedIn - what are their roles (e.g. HR or Accounts Managers?)

3. Dress to impress:• Smart attire (no jeans or trainers)• Remember to polish your shoes• Keep hair and nails neat• Be aware of bright/excessive make up and perfume/aftershave

During the Show:4. Arrival:• Pick up a floor plan on the day or, if available, view it online and plan your visit in advance• Go early – people are more enthusiastic early in the day• Practise a good handshake • Body language is extremely powerful - maintain eye contact, smile and be friendly

5. Seminars & Workshops• Attend them! They are informative and a good way to network• Take notes - jot down helpful information

6. Network• Don’t be shy - introduce yourself to company representatives• Listen to what they have to say and don’t be afraid to ask questions• Find out their next steps in the recruitment process so that you have a clear idea of what you need to do next• Collect business cards

After the Show – Next Steps:7. Remember to follow up:• Email or phone your contact (ideally within 72 hours) to demonstrate your interest in pursuing things further• Mention the event that you met them at

8. Remember key dates:• Be organised! Keep a record of dates and assessment days to remind yourself of deadlines

9. Don’t feel discouraged:• Ensure you are contacting the right person or department • If you do not get a response straight away, do not worry! This could be for many reasons, such as holidays or the job is on

hold.

10. Utilise your connections:• Speak with family and friends about your interests and aspirations - they may know of an opportunity available to you.

Muhammad Yunus Talk12th November 2017

On Sunday 12th November, Ms Alibhai, Ms Beled and 15 enthusiastic economic students attended a one off talk held at Conway Hall as part of a ‘How To Academy’ lecture series. Muhammad Yunus is the economist who invented microcredit, founded Grameen Bank, and earned a Nobel Peace Prize for his work towards alleviating poverty. In his talk he spoke passionately and provoked a great deal of discussion, which will no doubt continue with the group in coming weeks. Themes that emerged included:

• Urging individuals to unleash their creativity and become job creators in social businesses (where there are no dividends and all money generated is for the social good) and not remaining content with being job seekers.

• Arguing that the purpose of education is to help students discover the meaning of their lives.

• Offering us the thoughts that making money gives individuals happiness but making others happy gives individuals ‘super happiness’.

We are very grateful to the ‘How To Academy’ for their incredible generosity in giving us the tickets for this talk and felt very inspired by the powerful reflections of Muhamed Yunus.
