SAINTS AND SPECIAL OBSERVANCES Sunday: Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time; World Marriage Day; World Day of the Sick Monday: Lincoln’s Birthday Tuesday: Mardi Gras; Shrove Tuesday Wednesday: Ash Wednesday; Valentine’s Day; Fast and Abstinence Friday: Abstinence; Chinese New Year 4716 Saturday: The Seven Holy Founders of the Servite Order

Fr. Gerard’s Corner Jesus was moved with pity. Filled with compassion, Jesus could not ignore the leper who approached him, knelt down, and begged him to make him clean. But he did not just hold his arm out and heal him from a distance. Jesus touched him. He broke through the barrier that separated the clean from the unclean. Because the moment he touched the leper Jesus be-came unclean himself, he shared in the leper’s condi-tion as he cured it. In doing so, Jesus provides a model of Christian compassion. It is not enough to help from a safe distance. The Christian is called to reach out actively and touch those who need our compassion.

Jesus instructed the man not to say anything to anyone, but the former leper cannot not tell others. He witnesses to what happened, no doubt telling everyone he met that Jesus was the real deal. He experienced the touch of Jesus firsthand and can describe how it felt as the disease immediately left his body. He is not going to keep this to himself! For the believer, the natural response to being made whole is to testify to it. We want to share our story.

In his First Letter to the Corinthians, Saint Paul asks his fellow Christians to “do everything for the glory of God” (1 Corinthians 10:31). He is telling them this in the context of conflicts that arose because of the differing backgrounds of the early Christians. Some of Jewish tradition took offense at the way some from Gentile cultures acted and vice versa. Paul understood this, and being the great uniter, tried “to please everyone in every way” (1 Corinthians 11:33). The best way to do that is to be conscious of glorifying God in our actions.

St. James - St. Leo February 11, 2018 Page 6

Dear St. James and St. Leo parishioners,

I have been wanting to write this note for some time but there is always something urgent to do. People had warned me that when I retire I would have more to do, it seems to be the case for now. I keep telling people who asked me how I enjoy retirement that I retired from being the pastor not from life.

My main goal today is to say thank you for the many years of love and support but especially for the incredible celebration on the occasion of my 50th Anniversary of Ordination. I want first to thank the planning committee headed by Debbie Derderian and Maria McEaney and all those who helped them. In my opinion everything was perfect! The liturgy was wonderful. The choir was outstanding, thank you Pauline Wright, the singers and musicians.

It was wonderful to have family members sharing this peak experience with me. My nieces Edith Doucet and Rose-Marie Farley and their husbands, my son Ken and my grandchildren Christopher and Sara. There were friends who surprised me and came from very far like Deacon Joe Santen and his wife Lee from North Carolina, Bob and Joan Morris from Montana. The dinner atmosphere was electrifying, the entertainment just right, the roasting gentle culminating with Pepe Romero playing. What else could one ask for?

I have not started to write individual thank you notes but I will hopefully during this working trip to the

Philippines. Just be assured that I will never forget. Thank you Lord for such a faith community.

It is the story of Francis of Assisi and the Sultan of Egypt, and their meeting on a bloody battlefield during the period of Christian- Muslim conflict known as the Crusades.

Blood Bank at St. James February 11th

When's the last time you saved someone's life? Here's your chance! The mobile unit of the San Diego Blood Bank will be at St. James Sunday, February 11, from 7:30 A.M. to 1:00 P.M. to receive blood donations. Bringing it close to home, we have had several parishioners whose lives have been saved by blood transfusions, and over the years we’ve been doing it, your donations have saved over 9,000 lives. Remember: people are the only source -- there is no substitute. And only 3% of Americans ever donate blood. If you've never given blood before, now is the time to start. Let’s give them a big turnout! Make an appointment by:

St. James—St. Leo Catholic Community is under the pastoral care of the Eudist Fathers, or Congregation of Jesus and Mary. We owe our name to Saint John Eudes who founded the Congregation in France in 1643. The Eudists currently operate in 15 countries, most of which are in the developing world. Evangelization, mainly with the poor and the youth, is our primary purpose, as well as formation to ministry in the
