FEBRUARY 16 ~ SIXTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
It’s all about the Law this week. Sirach gives us great insight, “If you choose you can keep the command-ments, they will save you;” The choice is ours to live by the law or not. In the Gospel of Matthew, Jesus sets the bar high for us – it’s not simply about doing good and avoiding evil, there’s more: “whoever breaks one of the least of these commandments and teaches others to do so will be called least in the kingdom of heaven.” What kind of example do you set with adults and with children? Pray for what you need: Kindness? Patience? Temperate speech? Self-control?
A REMINDER
Ash Wednesday is February 26, one week from this Wednesday. This begins the Annual Lenten Retreat of
40 Days.
LENTEN PREVIEW
If you are a homeowner, you know that it is essential from time to time to inspect the foundation of the house. It is the same with our faith. Pope Benedict had a deep desire that all of us would come to appreci-ate the joy and beauty of our Catholic faith.
On the Monday evenings of Lent from 7:00PM to 8:15PM, Father John will offer a series of presentations on the foundations, or basics, of Christian Catholic faith. These presentations will help you to deepen your
understanding and love of the faith. They are also geared for any person aged 18 to 100 years who has not yet been confirmed and would like to receive the Sacra-ment of Confirmation this Spring. Also invited are any persons who would like to know more about our faith and our Catholic Church.
SUPPORT OF THE CHURCH AROUND THE WORLD
Next week’s second collection will support the Church in those underdeveloped areas of the world. Catholic Relief Services (CRS), the Church in Africa and in Central and Eastern Europe and three important nation-al Catholic missions: the Military Archdiocese, Home Missions, and the Black and Indian Missions. Your generosity will help fund the spiritual, educational and humanitarian needs of the Church around the world. For more information about each of these organizations go to their websites:

SCRIPTURE FOR FEBRUARY 09
First Reading Sirach 15:15–20 (76A) Immense is the Lord’s wisdom. The Lord God sees every created thing and understands every human deed. Human be-ings have life and death before them, and they receive whichever they choose. Responsorial Psalm 119:1–2, 4–5, 17–18, 33–34 Blessed are they who follow the law of the Lord! Second Reading 1 Corinthians 2:6–10 Paul wrote that real wisdom is God’s: hidden, mysteri-ous, planned and prepared from the very beginning for the glory of those who love the Lord. Gospel Acclamation cf. Matthew 11:25 Blessed are you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth; you have revealed to little ones the mysteries of the king-dom. Gospel Matthew 5:17–37 or 5:20–22a, 27–28, 33–34a, 37 Jesus said he came not to abolish the law but to fulfill it. He described such fulfillment as a matter not of legal argumentation but of holiness, reconcilia-

April 9, 2020. Each session will be held from 10:00AM to 11:30 AM at the Sisters of St. Joseph Motherhouse at 637 Cambridge Street, Brighton, MA. There is no cost for this series; however donations to The Women’s Ta-ble are welcome. To register, please call Linda Booth-royd, CSJ Agrégée at 617-746-1603. Or, you may con-tact Mary Rita Weschler via email at [email protected] for more information.

MINISTRY TO ILL AND HOMEBOUND
We try to keep up to date about parishioners who are hospitalized, ill or homebound. However, we need your assistance. If you know a parishioner who would benefit from a pastoral visit, please call Barbara Ma-honey, our Pastoral Care Coordinator, at 781-729-8220 ext. 16 and let her know so that we can arrange it. Please don’t assume we know. We’d rather have duplicate calls than not know of someone in need. Thank you.
VOLUNTEER NEEDED
We are looking for someone to help maintain our lovely kitchen in Manion Hall. The volunteer position would require someone to check on the kitchen monthly to make sure that it is kept clean and orga-nized. If you are interested please contact Lori Pes-catore at [email protected].

THE UNBROKEN WORD……………………………………….BY MICHAEL CUNNINGHAM
Belonging and the Call to Action
Belonging is a huge topic. It is one studied by historians, psychologists, sociologists, and each and every one of us. While we may not be looking at the tribal character of belonging, or the intrinsic need to “belong” in our lives, we all know about belonging from how it feels.
If we are included, we understand what to be “home” feels like. It is hard to describe, but often that warm feeling we get in our core gives us the assurance that we are loved and attached. This might be very deep, such as in a marriage or family situation, or in the “families” we create in our lives; at work, play and in various groups. Sometimes the relationships with friends and colleagues seem like they go deeper than the ones with our blood relatives. Perhaps that has something to do with the ability to choose your friends.
The need for belonging is built into our DNA. We know how important it is to belong, and we can tell the difference between being included and being loved and accepted. The acceptance in any relationship shows our openness to one another. Our ability to be loved is often very much related to our willingness to show love.
Our desire to belong is, therefore, something that binds us all together. Belonging is both a desire and a need. We all want it. Otherwise, we would be spending our lives rejecting others, not letting them into the inner circle of our soul, where our heart beats and where God resides within us. While we all have our moments of rejecting others, some-times unknowingly, a state of continued rejection is one of exhaustion. It is too much work to spend time being ornery to others, at least all of the time!
So while we want to be on the receiving end of love, acceptance, invitations, and all the “incoming” benefits of be-longing, there is more to it than this. To really belong, we have also to take action. We cannot remain inert, sitting there like a sponge waiting for others to invite us to join. Jesus’s mission in teaching had him on the road, explaining, teaching, inviting, disputing and clashing with those who taught hatred and self-promotion, replacing it with the guidelines of loving God and one another in what we now know as the Body of Christ. That’s us!
So perhaps this week we can consider those guidelines, clearly delineated in the beatitudes and supported by the Gifts of the Holy Spirit showered on us during Pentecost. We can make the connection ourselves. Are we really using those gifts as well as we could? The Church says, “All are welcome.” Am I practicing this in my life? I know for myself, there are always ways where my belonging to a certain group also, in a subtle way, excludes and differentiates me from others. This is not what Jesus intended. Remember, what we do to the least of our brothers and sisters, we do to Christ?
If we remember Christ in our belonging, we will be both grateful and mindful in our treatment of others. This is something I will try and keep on my heart.
