It was a great day on the foreshore with the sailing club doing some wonderful work within our community. Young Life Fundraiser I attended the Young Life Fundraiser last week and was inspired by the commitment and message of hope that this organisation sends. Young Life Australia is a not-for-profit, youth mentoring charity which provides role modelling, leadership training and guidance for young high school aged Australians. It aims to send a message of hope, provide a real sense of life direction, and help steer young people away from dangerous high risk activities such as drug taking and binge drinking. Walk Safely to school I attended the annual walk safely to school day at Putney Public School on Friday. Pedestrian and road safety is vitally important especially given the recent spate of accidents involving children and cars. I urge all parents to discuss this important issue with their children and where possible to escort their children into the school grounds. At Putney Public we also enjoyed a healthy breakfast provided by parents at the school. This brings me to ‘healthy kids, active kids’. Stay tuned for a Council Community Breakfast initiative in this regard. Close to 300 young people from schools across the district will descend on Macquarie University to take part in this game-changing experience. They are coming to learn, connect, challenge and drive the conversation about how to deal with the topics affecting young people – in particular, mental health and responsible drinking. They will come up with actions that can work locally and carry them back to their schools, friends and communities. I am very proud to be the instigator of this Youth Summit, as I am passionate about promoting young people, their achievements, aspirations and actions. Over the past months I’ve had the privilege of working closely with members of the Youth Empowerment Summit (YES) Organising Committee, comprising eight outstanding young people from our City whose energy and capabilities I admire. The recently named Young Volunteer of the Year, Aidan Fisher, is the chairperson of the committee and he is ably supported by Hayden Evans, Venetia Cameron, Sophie Lara-Watson, Benjamin Mitchell, Ben Kyriazis, James Camilleri and Jacqueline Olling.
