Reflection:
"Whoever does not carry his own cross and come after me cannot be
my disciple."
The whole Church remembers today Mary, our Blessed Mother, the
Mother of God, as we celebrate her birthday. It is the feast of her nativ-
ity. Mary is the model of all disciples, being the first disciple herself.
Although unknown to her at the beginning, she was destined for great
things, for the most challenging and most fulfilling role, being the
Mother of God. Mary reached this glory by passing through trusting
obedience and humble silent service. Mary gave us a shining example
of discipleship on how to become great and glorious through her hu-
mility.
It is fitting therefore that the gospel this Sunday, speaks about on what
it means to be a disciple of our Lord. Discipleship entails a life of sacri-
fice, even to the point of death, like Jesus' death on the cross in follow-
ing the will of His Father in heaven. To be a disciple of Jesus does not
spell success or earthly happiness. It may involve human pain and un-
pleasant experience, for we will
not always live by what is most
attractive. It involves a loyalty
that is willing to forego what is
appealing to human nature and
that refuses to cater to self-pity.
It also means the greatest happi-
ness for it demands the best of
ourselves. It is always a choice
for life, not for death.

Why do we celebrate Catechetical Sunday?
In 1935, the Vatican published On the Better Care and Promotion of
Catechetical Education, a document that asks every country to acknowledge the importance of the Church’s teaching ministry and
to honor those who serve the Christian community as catechists.
For the first few years after Catechetical Sunday was
established, national catechetical congresses were held in
conjunction with the celebration. Beginning in 1971, the USCCB’s Department of Education began
producing materials to help parishes celebrate the event at the local level. When the Committee on Catechesis, now named the
Committee of Evangelization and Catechesis, was named by the
Conference as a standing Committee, it continued to publish Catechetical Sunday materials each year. The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops has designated the third Sunday in September as
Catechetical Sunday.
