e-magazines are here. No need to wait for SK Local to drop into your post box. Each e-magazine has

active weblinks - you can click straight through to selected websites - try it today - sklocal.co.uk

1. Go to sklocal.co.uk2. After afew moments pages start turning.

3. Click any e-magazine for a full screen view. 4. Flick through pages or

click on weblinks.Until now the covers shown at sklocal.co.uk have simply been pictures. Not anymore. The current issues are now fully accessible e-magazines, with turning pages. Click any e-magazine and it can be viewed in a full screen, with greater control of the page turning - you can flick forward, backward and jump between spreads or zoom in to part of any page. Where an advertiser or feature has a website and they have chosen the service, there is an active web link to take you to the relevant website.

I’m really happy to make these magazines available through my website. Hopefully, in the near future access to the e-magazines will be possible from iphones and other smart mobile web devices. Getting SK Local through the web will, obviously, reduce all of the environmental activities associated with production. It is with

such reductions in mind that I aim to reduce physical distribution as much as possible and, from the next issue, you can help achieve this aim. If you are happy to get SK Local as an e-magazine please go to sklocal.co.uk and submit a contact form message to allow me to build a list of addresses that don’t require a printed version. I can’t absolutely promise not to deliver one, but I will try very hard to ensure that my distributors don’t deliver to you.

The e-magazines should be ready by the 1st of the month of publication, usually a few days before. By completing the contact form I can alert you to the availability of e-magazines by e-mail or, if you don’t wish to receive an e-mail, you can keep an eye on us at facebook.com/sklocaldirectories or at twitter.com/sklocal.

“The cloud,” is a phrase on the lips of every IT consultant at the moment, but what does it mean and what difference will it

make to you? “In the cloud” quite simply means software that is stored on a remote server and is accessed via the internet. In particular it is relevant to the complex interrelated databases that form the backbone to everything from Sage accounting software to internet banking software to a complete business system used by a large manufacturing company.

The Cloud has been around for virtually as long as the internet has. Email servers such as Hotmail and Yahoo are in the cloud; in other words your inbox, archive folders and sent box are accessed by logging onto the internet rather than by opening Outlook on your PC. Yell.com, Rightmove and EBay are all examples of software that is in the Cloud. The big revolution that is happening at the moment is putting business systems that would previously have been installed on powerful computers that lived in air conditioned rooms into the

COMPUTER ADVICEIn The Cloud

Cloud. Many businesses with card payment facilities but no point of sale now use Cloud based software, rather than having a card machine connected to a phone line.

The advantages are numerous. For starters, any PCs in the business are basically operating as dumb terminals, when using the business system anyway, so there is no need to invest in constantly updated infrastructure such as servers, PCs, networks and IT support functions to look after your kit and software. It is also great for remote working – so long as there is a broadband connection available, any member of staff can work on the system at any time from any place.

The cost savings aren’t just limited to a reduced hardware requirement either. Traditionally, a business would buy a new software system outright together with an implementation and ongoing support package. The cost could frequently run into millions of pounds. Most Cloud based systems are leased by the month with the customer simply paying a fixed fee per user. Because the software sits on one server, any upgrades are made globally and the customer will not notice any disruption at all, just that the software has become rather more user friendly which is the whole point of upgrades, after all.

So the Cloud is a wondrous thing but are there any downsides to it? Well, one or two. For starters, you are entirely dependent on your internet connection; if it goes down for any reason, and such an event is not unheard of, your business literally cannot function. Similarly, if your broadband download speed is slow, your software will work slowly. There are security considerations too, your system will be pretty secure against hackers but you could have any number of user Ids out there and they don’t need to enter your office to access your system.

Even so, the potential within the Cloud is huge. In years to come I expect software applications on individual PCs to become a thing of the past, along with in-house servers, intranets and air conditioned computer rooms. This Cloud definitely has a silver lining.

CHILDREN’S BOOK REVIEWFlyaway - Lucy Christopher

By Grace ChamberlainAge 10

When I was asked to do a book review, I was

really excited as it meant I could write about Flyaway by Lucy Christopher. It is her second novel and is aimed at readers aged 10 and above.

Isla is a thirteen-year old girl who loves birds. She lives with her mum, dad and her brother Jack. She also has a grumpy Grandpa on the other side of town. Though she loves her mum, she has a special relationship with her dad. Every year they go and watch the swans down on the reserve, on their own without mum and Jack.

When Isla witnesses her dad having a heart attack, she feels like her life can’t get any worse, especially as her best friend Saskia has just moved to Glasgow. Can anybody understand how she feels?

Later on when her dad is taken to hospital, Isla meets Harry Brambling, a boy ill

with cancer. Could he be the answer to her problems? From his hospital window, Harry and Isla watch a lone swan trying to fly and, before they know it, their lives change.

When Isla`s class are asked to make a model about flying, she makes some strap-on wings using old things from her grandpa’s barn. After discovering that, when she runs, the swan will copy her movements, she and Harry decide to use the wings to try to get the swan to fly. Unfortunately, when they sneak out in the night to try out their idea, Harry falls desperately ill and has to have an operation.

Harry keeps trying to convince her he’ll be fine but Isla isn’t so sure. What would happen if she never got to say goodbye or if he never got better and, more importantly, what would she do without him?

This is one of my favourite books. It is all about friendship, family and caring for others. I really enjoyed it and I would recommend it to anyone. Let your imagination soar with this book.

We are pleased to present the thoughts, observations and suggestions of Tim Hensel, a professional photographer based in New Mills. In this issue Tim

talks about taking the time to look at the beauty around us.

PHOTOGRAPHER’S EYEFresh Eyes By Tim Hensel

It’s easy when one first arrives in a new place to see how nice it looks. We can spend many

happy hours gasping out loud at the scenery and wander around getting dumbstruck by the sheer beauty with reckless abandon. As time passes however the new and exciting can quickly become mundane, the beautiful plain. It’s not that our surroundings have become any less picturesque nor that our eyes have ceased to function properly – we simply have newer things to notice and other matters on our minds.

It is perhaps fortunate that the same is true of the opposite. Arrive somewhere truly horrible (say, Crawley, for example) and you’ll find that within a relatively short space of time you’re able to bear it with minimum difficulty. However, we oughtn’t to dwell on unpleasantness.

Recently I was fortunate enough to visit Australia, and became stuck there as a result of the untimely eruption of an unpronounceable volcano in Iceland. This resulted in my being away from the High Peak for almost 6 weeks – the longest time I have spent away from the area by a large margin, since moving here almost 3 years ago.

Australia is, as any of you who have been there will know, a land offering many areas of great beauty to the hungry lens of the keen photographer - and I only saw a very, very small part of it. Returning to the High Peak I was surprised by how much I noticed the wealth of visual candy we have at our disposal. Even more surprisingly, this thought came to me whilst waiting for a train at New Mills Central.

As photographers, we have a responsibility to see things for others, package them up into bite-sized chunks and present them in such a way that the rest of the population can enjoy the world as we see it. How this applies to, say, landscape photography is obvious, but it is true of all disciplines within our art – a wedding photographer is hired to capture and present the day through his or her eyes, giving people the chance to relive the memories they want to.

For now, I’ve just arrived at a very interesting looking hotel somewhere in a pleasant part of the Midlands. However I’m not going outside to gawp at it in wonder, as it’s raining rather heavily. I’ll save the visual treat for tomorrow.

ROAD TESTAlfa Romeo Giulietta 1.4 TB 170bhp

The Giulietta is Alfa’s long awaited replacement for the Golf sized 164 hatchback. It will be offered only in a five

door format. Like many people with a genuine passion for cars I have long been a fan of Alfa Romeos; I even owned one once but would not repeat the experience – something to do with a malfunctioning Selespeed gearbox that the combined might of Alfa Romeo UK couldn’t fix. I love their looks, their passion and their quirkiness but I would be the first to admit that every model I have ever encountered has been deeply flawed in one way or another. So, will the Giulietta be yet another Alfa that you choose with your heart over your head, or will it finally break the mould?

Starting with the styling, Alfa have yet again proved that you can turn a capacious five door hatch into a thing of beauty. I like the perky Mito style nose with its distinctive inset Alfa grille, I love the way the slab sides are broken by a distinctive ridge that fades into the bodywork at the front door and then re-emerges on the rear flank, and I like the pert rear with its horizontal tail lights. Overall the car looks sharp and aggressive, just as an Alfa should.

Inside, all is as it should be too. There’s the distinctive dash with the main instruments mounted in twin pods behind the steering wheel and the horizontal curves that just escape being over-styled by a gnat’s whisker. The seats are big and plush (and trimmed in leather in the Lusso version I tested) and there’s plenty of room in the front, back and boot. That long armed, stumpy legged driving position is, thankfully, a thing of the past – any driver of any size can get comfortable behind the steering wheel.

ROAD TESTAlfa Romeo Giulietta 1.4 TB 170bhp

Continued From P.20

One of Alfa’s great s t r e n g t h s has always been its characterful engines. The line up for the Giulietta

now consists of two 1.4 litre engines producing 120 and 170bhp and a 1.8 unit kicking out an

astonishing 235bhp. The 170bhp unit in the car I tested is the pick of the bunch to my mind, punchy yet refined though it would be nice to hear that Alfa exhaust rasp when you give it some beans. It delivers impressive performance, 0 to 62 in about 7½ seconds and with economy in the mid 40s.

Where the Giulietta really makes a step change from what has gone before is in the way it drives. The ride is remarkably composed and soaks up the bumps admirably, though it will judder slightly on a rough surface. The handling is sensational with bags of grip and masses of feedback through the nicely weighted, pinpoint sharp steering. It just feels so chuckable – you can throw it into any corner secure in the knowledge that the worst thing that will happen is some mild understeer. It is predictable but provides all the fun you could want at the same time.

There are Alfa aficionados out there who will tell you that hopeless reliability, flawed design and dubious engineering are all part of the Alfa experience but I don’t agree. Why should good looks, driving pleasure and pride of ownership not go hand in hand with space, practicality and first rate build quality? The Giulietta is a car that combines the driving pleasure of a Focus, the space of a Golf and the charisma that belongs only to Alfa Romeo. Alright, it’s a bit expensive and the engine is a bit bland but, nevertheless, finally we have an Alfa Romeo that you can choose with your head as well as your heart.

Mr P’s not just a nice guy, he’s a hell of a feller!

Mr P's Trees

Ihave a confession to make. As a fully paid up member of Her Majesty’s Tax Payers Alliance I necessarily have to drag myself away from

the Funny Farm, to earn a few coppers with a ‘proper job’. Most people that know me on a casual basis are of the opinion that I while away my hours pottering in the borders and rounding up errant chickens. How wrong they are. Gone are my days spent trying to eke out a living in someone else’s garden – I now have to keep Mrs Wild’s hat collection up to date by joining the ranks of that modern day phenomenon, the reluctant commuter.

Thankfully, being a high-level executive (!) I get to choose my mode of punishment and either take the train or, if I’m really lucky, drive to the local office. My main ‘train hobby’ is garden spotting. I love the smorgasbord of styles that are on show and I am forced to conclude that the ‘quintessentially English’ garden style is probably now extinct apart from in the archives of the National Trust. ‘Eclectically English’ is probably a better description of the national style.

IN THE GARDENPassing the time of Day....

The car offers more possibilities for the frustrated gardener with the freedom to take alternative routes if you get bored with the choice of the Satnav girl. As with the train I find favourite plots, feeling somehow attached to them – the only difference being that on the train you get the more intimate back garden experience whereas in the car it’s the full frontal public aspect. Or you could even go the whole hog and do what I did the other day. After years of driving past my favourite roadside display I finally plucked up the courage and stopped the car to congratulate the owners for providing such an uplifting and inspiring visual feast.

The garden is a perfect example of what can be achieved by using the right plants in the right places, in this case a sun drenched border with a slope providing perfect drainage. Just the place you’d expect Californian Poppies and Iris to flourish and return year after year. Once I had proved that I hadn’t escaped from secure accommodation(!) I was offered a cup of tea and had a delightful hour chatting with the owners about their garden. It has a fantastic natural appearance which has not been spoiled by any fancy designs or shifting of natural gradients – the garden is as simple as it is beautiful; a perfect example of achieving a visionary and sustainable finish for minimal expense.

Anyway I hope I left them feeling justifiably proud of their contribution to brightening the lives of the thousands of passing motorists. I know Volkswagen try to bring a bit of peace and love into the world by putting a tiny vase and flower on the dash of their Beetles, but you can’t beat the real thing!

UNITED COOPERATIVENEW MILLS BAND

OUR 200th ANNIVERSARY IN 2012NEW BAND MEMBERS SOUGHT TO KEEP US STRONG

1812 - The First Steps of Our Long MarchIn 1812 our founder, Timothy Beard, gathered

together his ‘goodly company of rural musicians’ to form the New Mills Old Prize Band. Our current name was adopted in the 1970s, in honour of the annual grant made by the Co-op every year.

Our bicentenary in 2012 marks 200 years since that first step of our long march in history. In fact, with almost 200 years of activity, our Band is the oldest continually active brass band in this country and, possibly, the world.

This is not a bold, unjustified claim. It would be difficult to find an older brass band as it was around 1800 that a dramatic change took place with the introduction of valves to control the air flow through the instruments. This modification led to players being able to play all notes in all keys whereas, previously, it was necessary to rely upon harmonics.

Music, Music All AroundWe have weekly rehearsals for all level of musician

- beginners to main band players - at our Band Room in Hurst Lea Road, New Mills every Wednesday evening from 6pm - 10pm. Anyone is welcome to attend, perhaps you will be inspired to join us. We offer amazingly inexpensive lessons at just 75 pence per session, we can even lend an instrument free of charge. Our only requirements are your time and your own front teeth!

During the year we perform at many events in the Derbyshire and Cheshire areas, including bandstand and marching performances.

Breathing New Life Into The BandTo helps us carry our history making forward, this

oldest band seeks new members. We invite all, from those interested in learning to play our instruments, to anyone with experience and, perhaps, no longer playing. Any age from 8 to 80. Why not join us now? The next few years around our 200th anniversary will be an exciting time. You can be part of our history at an important time.

Get In TouchIf you would like to join us you can come along to

any of our rehearsal evenings.

Alternatively, please feel free to contact the Band Master Paul Wheeldon on 01663 766 748 or by e-mail at [email protected]. We look forward to meeting you.
