Skeggy Jolly Fun CHECK

Skegness, Lincolnshire

Jolly Fisherman - 100 years old

FuntimeIt’s so bracing...

Skegness, the flagship resort of Lincolnshire’sEast Coast, is a haven for holidaymakers, nowfeaturing a redesigned multimillion pound foreshore area with the Embassy Centre attracting holidaymaker favourites from Ken Dodd and Joe Pasquale to David Essex and evenRoy ‘Chubby’ Brown as well as many 60s and70s bands to ensure a healthy mix of live entertainment whatever your taste.

One of Skegness’ greatest assets has to be itsenduring capacity to provide a great atmosphere, one of a bustling, happy summertime nature withchildren of all ages, families and a more matureholidaymaker each able to mix, and share thefantastic beach.

Skegness has frequently been commended in the Tidy Britain’s group’s Seaside Award for their efforts to maintain healthy clean beaches. The award will complement regular Blue Flagawards for tidy beaches making the East Coast’sgolden sands among the cleanest and mostpleasant in Britain.

In addition to its beach and myriad of seasideshops, amusement arcades and sellers of traditional seaside fayre from fish & chips andcandy floss to waffles & ice creams, there arealso dozens of attractions including Natureland,Hardy’s Animal Farm and the Gibraltar PointNature Reserve, or Bottons’ Pleasure Beach,Skegness Stadium and Ingoldmell’s FantasyIsland resort, with its white knuckle rides, markets and live shows for those seeking a lesssedate day trip or holiday.

The town’s Butlins resort now boasts modernisedaccommodation, shows and theme weekends forthose of all ages and for families, or adults seek-ing a weekend break from the family. The late SirBilly Butlin set up the resort in 1936 and this yearit is anticipated that over 350,000 people willstay there over the season, with many morevisiting for a single day, enjoying the facilitiesthe complex has to offer, including SplashWaterworld, the entertainment provided at Redsand the fun and games always going on in theSkyline pavilion.

Fun - Checklist

Now over a century old, Skegness’ mostfamous icon, the Jolly Fisherman, and theslogan Skegness is So Bracing wasoriginally commissioned by the GreatNorthern Railway Company in 1908,when the town was attracting 300,000visitors a year. Drawn by artist JohnHassall, who received 12 guineas for thework, it quickly became a huge success, attracting visitors from all over the

country to visit the holiday destination, often via its convenient rail links.

It is thought that the slogan was the workof one of the railway’s employees ratherthan Hassall himself, and though Hassalldied in 1948 a poor man of 80 years, henever lost his passion for the town, declaring that “The reality of Skegnesshas eclipsed all my anticipations.”

Skegness Stadium – amazing entertainment and fast paced fun!

North Parade Bingo – brilliant prizes and great entertainment... House!

Skegness Natureland – discover seals, sealions and a host of other playful animals!

Bateman’s Visitor Centre – discover Lincolnshire’s largest brewery.

Chequered Flag – ready, steady, go... fast family fun at this exciting go-kart track!

SUN SEA ANDSUN

CREAM

Oh we do like to be beside the

Seaside Sand

Welcome to Lincolnshire’s clean safe beaches!

Whilst holidays shouldalways be fun, theymust also be safe…

Peter Cornall, RoSPAHead of Beach Safety, said: “Recent sum-mers’ heatwaves haveseen more than 150people drown bothinland and on the UKcoast in June, July andAugust alone, andmany people whilstsunbathing fail tokeep an eye on theirchildren, leaving themto play independently.”

Don’t use inflatablesin the sea, keep an eyeon young children andinvestigate the areaaround which they areplaying to check forbroken glass and other

hazards before youchoose a spot in whichto relax, and you canrest assured that yourholiday won’t be spoiltby nasty accidents.

Skegness’ main seafront beach is well regarded and has won Tidy Britain awards for the past 15 years forbeing clean and safe for families, as well as Blue Flag recommendations for being well staffed throughoutthe season by trained lifeguards. Similarly, Mablethorpe’s Central Beach is a bustling, safe and equallyclean beach that’s perfect for family fun, but whilst popular, both of these areas are just the beginning ofLincolnshire’s coastline.

If, you’re looking for somewhere a little quieter, it’s worth exploring the Lincolnshire coastline in moredepth, after all, a seaside holiday simply isn’t the same without plenty of sun, sea and sand, whetheryou’re seeking sandcastles and family fun or nature walks and great surfing.

For those seeking nature, Theddlethorpe’s coast, between Mablethorpe and Saltfleet, attracts an abun-dance of wildlife and is perfect for anyone interested in bird watching or nature walks. Likewise, the coastline of the Gibraltar Point Nature Reserve is equally abundant inwildlife with some excellent visitor facilities for an educational visit too.

For water sports meanwhile, Sutton on Sea, between Mablethorpeand Chapel St Leonards is reputed for its water quality, andnearby Sandilands is popular with those seekingsurfing, with waves that are challenging, whilststill remaining safe.

Finally, for secluded romantic nature walks orfamily rambles, our recommendation is to stopoff at Mogg’s Eye, a beach running from the south ofSandilands to Anderby Creek, which has a reputation forbeing unspoilt and is excellent for dog walking and fishing.

Lincolnshire’s beaches areamong the safest and cleanestaround the country, but do payattention to the various flagsused to signal danger…

The presence of a red flagsignals danger, and indicatesthat you shouldn’t be swim-ming or surfing in the area.Red flags are frequently usedwhen dangerous rip currentsare present.

Red and yellow flags, meanwhile, indicate areas frequented swimmersand body board-ers.

These are the areas mostclosely supervised bylifeguards.

Finally, chequered flagsindicate areas used by surfers, and consequently, swimmingshould be avoided whenchequered flags are displayed.

The family has had seaside donkeys for over100 years and work from Easter to Septembereach year.

SuncreamMake sure that you return from your holidaylooking golden brown, not red raw!Whilst fun in the sun is an essential part of any seaside holiday, ensuring that you’re properly protected from the sun can mean the differencebetween going home with a healthy tan or looking like an injured lobster!Always buy a sunscreen with an SPF (sun protection factor) according to yourskin type, and remember that SPF is ameasure of protectionnot length of time.SPF 15 or more isrecommended, and will provide15 times the protection compared to that if youhad no sunscreenapplied toyour skin. Sunscreenshould notbe used toextend thelength oftime you can sunbathe.

Rock around

the Clock TowerDon’t forget to take home some

seaside rock after your holiday!

Skegness has plenty of

confectioners lining Lumley

Road and Grand Parade, all of

whom sell delicious novelty

confectionery. One company

producing traditional seaside

rock is Sweet Thoughts.

The company is based on

Skegness’ Hawthorn Road and

still make their products by

hand, but have you ever

wondered how the company

manages to put the word

‘Skegness’ through the centre?

After boiling sugar and glucose

to 300ºc in a large copper kettle

and cooling to the desired

temperature, the mixture is

aerated, flavoured and coloured.

Letters are then handmade by

alternative strips of toffee with

the rock itself. The lettering is

then batch rolled and pulled into

long strings.

The seaside wouldn’t be the seaside without cockles and mussels, fresh fish and theoccasional crabstick.

With Grimsby just anhour or so up the road, you’re spoilt for choicefor fresh fish on the EastCoast, and two of ourfavourite fishmongersare S W Elkington on theHigh Street, and theSkegness Shellfish Co onTower Esplanade.

Those fishing from the end of Skegness Pier report catching sole, bass, thornbacksand mackeral throughout the summer and whiting and cod later on in the year.

Alive Alive oh ...

Cockles and Mussels... and all sorts of other fish!

If you’re after something fishy in Skegness, the world is... quite literally... your oyster...!

Ice creamYou don’t have to wander far in Skegness to find icecreams!

Some of the best examples in the towncome from local producers, includingAppleby’s Ices (01507359002), Dennetts(01790 752573), and a little further down the coast, Skinners ofBoston (01205 364998).

Appleby’s Ices on theA1031 betweenMablethorpe andCleethorpes has a greatcoffee shop & restaurantserving hot and cold food.Meanwhile, Dennetts, based at Spilsby, providesice cream to many of thecounty’s best restaurants.

A chip off the old block...

For chips on the East Coast, there’s really only oneplace to be... Skegness’ High Street, also knownlocally as Chip Pan Alley because of its high concentration of ‘chippies’ and takeaways!Common to many of the chippies is fresh Grimsbyfish, chips made from Lincolnshire potatoes or ‘taties’and, naturally, a good spoonful of mushy peas!
