Pam began skiing in Schladming, Austria at the age of three. Fuelled by the desire to be faster than her older brother, a love of speed was obvious from an early age and her talent saw her win the Scottish Championships aged 9. At 16, Pam began racing full-time and soon afterwards she was selected for the Senior British Alpine Ski team. Having been a fixture of the British Alpine team for the last 9 years, she decided on a change and recently made the switch to Freestyle.

We caught up with Pam to find out what it takes to be a ski-x athlete

Q. What are your personal skiing achievements?

A. I had many British Alpine and Scottish Alpine champion titles from 10 to 25, then I moved to Skier Cross (Ski X) where I became British Champion in my first year in the sport. I also qualified for the 2010 Olympic Games and competed on the Alpine World Cup circuit and now the Freestyle World Cup.

Q. How long have you been skiing for?

A. I have been skiing now for 23 years, ever since my parents took me to Austria when I was 3. My competitiveness was evident then, as all I wanted to do was go faster than my older brother.

Q. What’s your favourite resort and why?

A. I love Lake Louise in Canada as I want to live there one day. It was a really fun World Cup to race and the people are so friendly. Closer to home I enjoy skiing the French Alps, especially the Three Valleys. I had a blast at the Clubhotel Skilt. The staff were great and I loved the fact that I could roll out of bed and practically be on the slopes!

Q. Any top tips to share with our future skiing generation?

A. I always say my biggest tip would be to believe in yourself - it sounds simple but it really goes a long way. With skiing it’s very easy to approach a ski run and think it looks very intimidating and get scared, but what you can talk yourself out of you can always talk yourself back into… self-confidence works. Also, wear sun cream, drink loads of water and love what you are doing.

...and our very own stars!

We pride ourselves on having the most experienced sales team within the school ski industry. Our enthusiastic, knowledgeable and passionate staff, headed up by our experienced sales manager Bob Colbourne, who has been working with SkiBound since 1996, will support you throughout the entire booking process. Either face-to-face with our Regional Account Managers or over the phone with our expert office-based team, we will listen to your requests and recommend a resort that best suits your needs, budget and ski tour requirements. The majority of our sales members have been with us for many years and have visited most of our featured resorts, enabling them to pass on insightful information about your preferred destination.

Once you have confirmed your booking with us, you will be assigned a dedicated tour coordinator who will handle all the pre-tour administration of your school ski trip. Your personal tour coordinator will be your main point of contact and is on hand to discuss, or answer, any queries regarding the finer details of your trip; such as flights, coaches, rooming, ski lessons, evening entertainment options. They will be able to provide your group with all the ‘added extras’ that will make your school ski trip that extra bit special – from tour hoodies, to pre-ordering your groups travel money.

Detail is key and the role of your tour coordinator is ensure that everything is addressed before you depart the UK, ensuring that you have a stress-free experience whilst in resort.

Our Operations Team led by Andy Burns is packed with experience, local knowledge and excellent contacts, as well as a thorough understanding of what school groups want from their ski trip. With permanent offices in the French Alps and Innsbruck, as well as a strong presence in each of our other territories throughout the year, the team’s focus is to ensure that we are working with carefully selected airlines, coach companies and overseas suppliers in the best ski resorts. In addition to the intensive planning and preparation ahead of your tour, the Operations Team will ensure that we have professional, dedicated and fun resort staff on hand to support your group throughout the duration of the trip.

We follow a rigorous recruitment process to ensure that we provide the best possible in-resort team. We look for enthusiastic, passionate people who can deliver outstanding customer service. Once selected, all of our reps undergo the relevant background checks and take part in a thorough training course which includes Child Protection and Health & Safety. We have an extensive list of experienced reps who continue to work with us year after year – often requested by our groups following excellent performances from previous years. In the event of unlikely and unexpected incidents, our reps are fully supported by our Resort Area Managers, local offices, UK office and the TUI Duty Office.

Although SkiBound has been operating for 28 years, it’s the experience of our staff that sets us apart from the rest. The majority of our management team have been involved in the school skiing industry for longer than they care to remember, building exceptional relationships with Party Leaders, resort staff and suppliers. Our extensive experience enables us to work in partnership with you to provide the perfect ski trip that you and your students deserve.

1. How many years have you been running school ski trips? I have been a party leader for 29 years taking my first trip in 1983

to Italy.

2. What do you look for when selecting a school ski tour operator? It is imperative that any tour company we use has a proven track record

and relevant experience in delivering authentic high quality specialist

skiing tours which represent good value. High levels of customer

service are also vital, where good organisation and attention to detail

is embedded in the company’s everyday practice. Top quality in resort

service is critical too, where staff must be well trained, motivated and

there to serve our students. All companies must also be ABTA/ATOL

bonded.

3. How many ski trips have you taken to our Clubhotels? I have taken 15 trips to Skibound Clubhotels.

4. Why do you stay in our Clubhotels? SkiBound Clubhotels offer superb value for our school ski trips. They are

excellently located in top resorts offering high quality accommodation,

meals that our students genuinely like and many additional amenities to

support our tour programme. Without exception the management and

staff interact in a professional but friendly way with both my staff and

students which serves to enhance their experience in the mountains/

during their ski tour.

5. What sets our Clubhotels apart from our competitors?

I never hesitate to book a SkiBound Club hotel simply because I know

that they consistently deliver an authentic and complete package which

represents the best value on offer. It is highly evident from the levels

and quality of service we receive at the Clubhotels, that SkiBound’s

management and staff training programme is exceedingly effective.

6. Why would you recommend our Clubhotels to other ski Party Leader?I would unreservedly recommend any of SkiBound’s Clubhotels simply

because of the peace of mind it gives you as a party leader. There are

ever increasing demands and legal responsibilities placed on staff

leading ski tours, so the assurance you gain by choosing a Clubhotel

not only takes away so many potential difficulties, but ensures as party

leader you can focus on a quality experience for your skiers.

7. What’s your favourite Clubhotel and why?The Curling at Tignes, because it is in an unprecedented location with outstanding skiing, within a very safe village and offers great food and accommodation only minutes from the slopes. The hotel itself caters for all of our students needs and they enjoy a genuine ski atmosphere in safety and comfort.

1. How many years have you been running school ski trips? I started in the early 80s and my first trip was to Serre Chevalier with a

small group of primary kids. So that makes about 32 years of trips..

2. What do you look for when selecting a school ski tour operator? Value for money for the young people, good quality and consistent safe

provision in resort and efficient back up during the organisation.

3. How many ski trips have you taken to our Clubhotels? Too many to count as a coordinator. Personally I’ve travelled to all of

your clubhotels in the company many times, either with groups, as a

party leader or as an associate. At least one per year for the last

15 years.

4. Why do you stay in our Clubhotels? The quality is consistent year on year, with development of the service

something the company takes seriously. Investment in the hotels is

evident and feedback from schools is worked upon wherever reasonable.

The locations are good, especially from the Party Leaders point of

view in terms of piste side, snow record and access to après-ski. All

the resorts used are top locations respected in the ski world for quality

provision, safety and service. Management in resort and support for the

staff is proactive to strive for the company agreed service levels.

5. What sets our Clubhotels apart from our competitors?

Overall the hotel service consistency is a real strength of the company,

Party Leaders can chose any of the resorts (all good) and know they will

get a high quality service.

6. Why would you recommend our Clubhotels to other ski Party Leader? For all the reasons mentioned above.

7. What’s your favourite Clubhotel and why?The Skilt for me has to come top because of the location and the service

provided. The hotel staff and management cannot be faulted in their

professional approach and their service at meals, support to Party

Leaders in everything to do with making an excellent trip.

Safe & secure

Undoubtedly, safety and security is the most important aspect when choosing a school ski provider. With our vast experience, this is an area we wouldn’t dream of compromising.

Building securityAll of our seven Clubhotels are being continuously updated and have all achieved ‘type R’ status. This classification ensures that the hotels meet the highest standards in fire detection, fire containment, fire-systems control, smoke evacuation and people evacuation.

Personal security Our Clubhotel employees are recruited on the basis of their skills and eagerness to work with school groups and provide excellent customer service. Every individual is carefully screened and CRB checked, whilst seasonal staff are all checked through the list 99 scheme. The entrance to the majority of our Clubhotels is via coded doors and all of our Clubhotels provide 24hr staffing, with English speaking night porters on duty.

Our French Clubhotels

One of the great benefits of choosing a SkiBound Clubhotel is that we own, maintain and store all of the ski equipment in-house – so you won’t get snowed on going to a ski-fit at our Clubhotels! With a massive investment made each year, we always stock the right sizes and ranges and our qualified Salomon ski technicians are on-hand to ensure that the right equipment is supplied to all abilities (from the nervous novice to the aspiring Olympian). Snowboarders may have to pick up their kit from a local hire shop, but we will

ensure that everything is arranged prior to your group arriving in resort

We are delighted to announce that we are currently using Salomon Focus and Mini Kart skis, boots and poles from one of the world’s leading ski equipment manufacturers – Salomon.

Our philosophy is simple; to provide healthy nutritional meals to even the most demanding of pallets. To achieve this, our Clubhotel menus have been carefully designed and developed over numerous years of experience and input from our Party Leaders.

Our chefs are also fully conversant with the many special dietary requirements now seen as standard, with most requirements easily catered for. All of our staff understands the importance of various food intolerances and allergies, which are handled with ease and sensitivity. Please feel free to discuss anything with your tour coordinator and if you would like, our chefs and hotel managers will be happy to get in touch directly.

With our standard Clubhotel tour package, we typically provide a continental breakfast, hot lunch and a two-course evening meal. However, any of these options can be upgraded to suit your catering requirements.

Afternoon tea and cakesThere’s no better way to build an appetite than a full day skiing in the fresh mountain air. Rather than hit the sweet shops, let us provide a filling option of teas, cakes, biscuits, fruit and soft drinks for your group.

Drinks with mealsAlways a popular option with pupils and Party Leaders, we can offer any level of provision of soft drinks for pupils and wine or beer for adults, and build this into your individual quotation – just let us know your requirements.

All inclusiveThe easiest way to ensure that your group has absolutely everything they need and reduce the requirement for additional pocket money or budgeting. We can arrange for your whole group to receive a drink with meals and two evening entertainments for just £26 per person.

For any of these options, please call our knowledgeable team to discuss the possibilities and the applicable costs involved.

All our food is glorious!!

In 1998, with an engineering degree in my back pocket, I decided to head out to Valloire with SkiBound for what turned out to be the best experience of my life… and I haven’t looked back since. A natural passion for everyone to enjoy their winter in the Alps has driven me to dedicate my time to SkiBound and you.

Do I have a favourite resort? I suppose that depends on what stage of my life I refer to. The ‘beginner’ in me would say Serre Chevalier – vast open domain, record number of blue-sky skiing days and pistes loaded with snow-laden fir trees. The ‘X-Games wannabe’ would have to say Tignes – big half-pipes, powder fields and an exciting après-ski makes for a thrilling holiday. For the ‘all-rounder’, La Plagne is hard to beat – with something for everyone, be it gentle tree-lined runs or the natural network of gullied runs. With the hotel Turquoise sandwiched between 2 runs, I will become the legend that managed to ski through the hotel front door and out the back picking up a 'chocolat chaud' on the way!

In the mid 90’s I went on a skiing holiday and thought I quite like this, the next year I went on 2, the following I went on 3 and before I knew it I had resigned from my career in the UK, put my house up for rent and decided to do a season – and 11 years later I’m still here! Over the 11 years I have worked in numerous ski stations from Crest Voland (small and very French) to Courchevel (large and definitely not French); my favourite ski domain has to be Serre Chevalier due to the 4 very different ski areas that merge to produce some of the best terrain in the Alps, catering for both beginners and experts, with a great blue sky day record to boot. The Frejus Telecabine, which is across the road from SkiBound’s own Clubhotel Frejus, whisks you off to the top of the Villeneuve ski domain where you can easily access all areas. Following Serre Chevalier has to be Alpe d’Huez, again another great ski area but with fantastic après-ski for all ages including ice skating, high ropes, outdoor swimming pool and our own in-house discotheque at the Vallée Blanche.

Did I make the right decision all those years ago? I live in one of the most beautiful parts of the world, sharing my passion for mountain activities with the team and guests each year and I get to see all our guests from beginners to experts having a wonderful time either on the slopes or in one of our Clubhotels after a full day of fun on the mountain – so the answer to the question has to be yes, especially as I met my wife here who incidentally has worked for SkiBound for over 18 years!!

Meet the localsIf you’re looking for the perfect resort to take your school group, then look no further than Alpe d’Huez. After making your way up the legendry 21 hair-pin bends you will be greeted by “L’ile au soleil”. The combination of sun and snow is what attracted me to this resort 5 seasons ago. I’ve been here ever since and now call this place home. The Clubhotel Vallée Blanche is the perfect base for your school group, only a short walk to the ski lifts and resort centre. Relax by the log fire and enjoy the stunning panoramic views across the Oisan Valley. After the sun goes down the fun continues, as our in-house cinema and disco, complete with neon lights and glow sticks, will keep the students entertained until it’s time to call it a night. Alex

Loads of space for large groups

Meet the localsAfter working in a number of SkiBound Clubhotel’s, I was given the opportunity to be based in Alpe d’Huez. I arrived here 5 years ago for the winter and summer seasons and haven’t looked back. From challenging black runs to wide open blues and greens, the 249km of skiing is spread over a huge area and has something for everyone. After a long day on the slopes, ski within 30metres of the Clubhotel Belle Aurore’s front door and relax in the spacious lounge, bar or on the sun terrace. After an enjoyable dinner in the newly refurbished restaurant, join us in our action-packed evening entertainment programme: Visit the modern Palais des Sport to tackle the in-vertigo assault course or a high energy game of laser ice warriors – the choice is yours!Alex

Meet the localsAfter a few seasons in different resorts I came to Les Menuires as a Ski Rep in 1994 and have been here ever since! (I must hold the record for longest ever gap year). I have been a manager here for twelve years and each winter my family makes the Skilt our home. All our wonderful SkiBound hotel staff become an extended part of our family and welcoming so many returning guests to the Skilt each winter, who have seen my children grow, is a great part of the job. It’s easy to see why the Skilt is so popular - Ski school meets 10 metres from the door, a high speed chair and gondola lift both within 50 metres of the hotel and a warm friendly welcome from all our staff. It’s almost too easy to run a successful ski tour at the Skilt.

Meet the localsLes Menuires has re-invented itself into one of the most practical and functional value for money resorts in the world, and this is what attracted me to the resort in 1994. The resorts traditional emphasis on slope-side convenience just makes everything so easy and practical. And this is no exception with the Hotel Piolet, which offers that door step skiing we crave so much when our legs are shot! The Hotel provides everything you could need with a large restaurant, bar and games room all on the first floor. The large windows provide an inspiring view of Cime de Caron and La Masse to get you started every morning. This spectacular place has become our family home and my wife tells me the Piolet is extra special because we met here 15 years ago.Chay

Having worked in the school ski industry since 1998

and for SkiBound since 2006, I've been extremely

fortunate to visit and ski numerous resorts in

North America. There are many things that make a

skiing trip to North America so unique; dependable

snow, unrivalled service, no language barriers, big

portions of food. But it’s also the ability to include

a city stopover to the likes of NYC and also visit

the outlet malls, selling top designer brands at

discounted prices – after all, students just love to

shop! I have recommended four ski resorts below,

but the list could be 20+ long.

I've been working in the School Ski industry for

almost ten years and have been fortunate to live

and work in various European ski destinations

throughout that time. Each country has its own

distinctive delights, however for me, Italy is hard

to beat. With a wide range of resorts offering

extensive skiing, high altitudes, traditional and

historic village resorts, lively après-ski, colourful

local characters, fascinating language and

culture and last but not least, fantastic food!

Fresh powder and fresh pasta… that’s what skiing is

all about!

For an all round affordable alpine experience,

you’d be hard placed to find a better destination

than Austria. Believe me, as a former teacher, who

moved to Austria twenty five years ago, I know

what factors make a successful ski trip. From

famous resorts like Kitzbühel to traditional villages

like Mauterndorf, we offer the best selection of

destinations and hotels to suit every group and

every budget. Add to that modern lift systems,

great snow record, excellent snow making, the

enviable reputation of the Austrian ski schools and a

wide choice of evening activities – this is why groups

come back year after year to Austria, the land where

modern skiing was born.
