Certificate III Health Service Assistance- Class Excursion

On Friday 20th of November our HSA students had an excursion across Melbourne City as part of the unit CHCDIV001 Work with diverse people. They started at the Immigration Museum, then went to Little Greece where the students tried Saganaki, Dolmades and Tzatziki for the first time. They then visited QV to see the Queen Victoria Hospital before heading over to the Shrine of Remembrance.

Kushma Prasad

Kushma studied the Diploma of Nursing with us as part of our 1/18 group at the CBD campus. Kushma originally worked in a Medical Centre before being offered a position as a PCA while studying. This is where she discovered her passion of working in Aged Care as well as Mental Health Nursing.

Kushma says her favourite placement experience with STA was a rural placement at EdenHope District Memorial Hospital for Acute. She found that a rural placement provided her with more opportunities to learn and practice new skills, due to less amount of staff and more one-on-one time with supervisors.

Kushma finished up with us in November last year and was unable to apply for her EN registration as she needed to complete her PTE English Language test beforehand. Kushma then worked hard preparing for this test, taking English Language classes dedicated to learning strategies to pass the PTE’s. However, Kushma then moved to Sydney and the COVID-19 pandemic hit. This made it difficult for Kushma to organise her registration due to COVID-19 restrictions. Instead, Kushma was offered and decided to get involved in a 9-week interstate program, working in the COVID-19 frontline with Estia Health. When Kushma was requested to return to Victoria to work during the second wave, she felt she had to throw herself into work and support and protect those with COVID-19.

Kushma has now returned to Sydney where she has applied for her registration in August and is now looking for work as an Enrolled Nurse.

Congratulations Kushma. We commend you for your hard work, and for supporting Victorians in the COVID-19 frontline.

Resume Writing Tips- The Do’s and Don’ts

Do’s Don’ts

Customise your resume for each job. Your resume should target the employer you are sending it to. You can do this my emphasising your most relevant experiences/skills that fit the role.

Include and highlight relevant unpaid experiences/volunteer work.

Keep it simple and use a clear, consistent resume format. List work history in reverse chronological order, with your most recent experiences at the top. Bullet points are great!

Match key words to the job listing. Your resume should reflect that you are the right candidate by showing you meet their criteria.

Send a resume with typos or formatting errors. Check over your resume and ask someone else to check it for you too!

Forget to include or acknowledge that you can supply references upon request. Ask your referees whether you can use them as a reference prior to listing them.

State salary expectations. This can instead be discussed further along the application process.

Use an unprofessional email address or outdated contact details.

Make those 6 seconds count!

If you would like any further help with job applications let us know-

Decembeard

What is Bowel Cancer? Bowel cancer, also known as colorectal cancer, can affect any part of the colon or rectum. The colon is the longest part of the large intestine (the first 1.8 metres). It receives almost completely digested food from the ceacum (a pouch within the abdominal cavity that is considered to be the beginning of the large intestine), absorbs water and nutrients, and passes waste (stool/faeces/poo) to the rectum. The most common type of bowel cancer is called an adenocarcinoma, named after the gland cells in the lining of the bowel where the cancer first develops. Other rarer types include squamous cell cancers (which start in the skin-like cells of the bowel lining), carcinoid tumours, sarcomas and lymphomas Decembeard This month is Decembeard- a Bowel Cancer Australia’s hair-raising fundraiser encouraging you to grow hair anywhere to raise awareness and funds to help beat bowel cancer. Here are some ideas to get involved:

• Grow a beard or some chin stubble and promote your facial hair

• Dye, decorate or shave your precious face fur and create something amazing

• No stubble, no trouble: legs, brows, head – if it’s hair – let it grow, let it grow, let it grow

• Donate the amount you spend on shaving/grooming or by skipping your next waxing appointment
