The Skills of Hockey
Hockey is a sport made up of many different skills. The ability to execute skills consistently and with thecorrect technique is vital to the development of all players.
This document provides players and coaches a guide to performing a range of hockey skills. The skills ofhockey have been divided into 3 tiers.
Tier 1 (red band)The most basic skills of hockey and these should be learnt 1 st
Tier 2 (blue band)Features developmental skills and should be developed once all tier 1 skills are at a capable level
Tier 3 (yellow band)Advanced skills of hockey and should be taught to players who are sound in all other skills

Grip and Stick Height
Grip Place the stick on the ground with the flat
side facing the ground and the hook on theright side pointing away from you
With the left hand pick up the stick at thevery top
The right hand moves forward to shakehands with the stick around 1/3 of the waydown the grip
*when rotating the stick only the left hand willrotate with the right hand acting as a guide
Stick Height Get the player standing with their feet
together and knees straight
The correct stick height will be about halfway between the players hip and hip joint.

1.2 Dribbling (Indian dribble)
Grip Players should grip their stick with their left
hand at the top of the stick
Their right hand about 1/3 the ways downthe stick.
Technique Players should keep the ball on their stick at
all times whilst dribbling. To change direction the player should rotate
the stick using their left hand and changedirection whilst keeping the stick in contactwith the ball.
The ball should ideally stay in front of theplayers body
Coaching Points
Stick should stay in contact with ball, evenduring change of direction The ball should be in front of the player Player should have their vision forward

1.3 Dragging Left to Right
Grip Players should grip their stick with their left
hand at the top of the stick
Their right hand about 1/3 the ways downthe stick.
Technique The player should keep their stick on the ball Rotate stick using left hand only Drag ball across body (ideally on a 45-90
degree angle) Ball should be returned to running with the
ball position quickly after drag is complete
Coaching Points Player should run to the right of the tackler
to create space to drag into
Body weight should transfer with drag of ball Vision should remain up Player may tuck back in behind once drag
is complete

1.4 Dragging Right to Left
Grip Players should grip their stick with their left
hand at the top of the stick
Their right hand about 1/3 the ways downthe stick.
Technique The player should keep their stick on the ball Player should approach drag in running with
the ball position
Drag ball across body (ideally 90 degreeangle) Ball should be returned to running with the
ball position quickly after drag is complete bykeeping stick on ball
Coaching Points
Player should run to the left of the tackler tocreate space to drag into Body weight should transfer with drag of ball Vision should remain up Player may tuck back in behind once drag
is complete

1.5 Jinking Left to Right
Grip Players should grip their stick with their left
hand at the top of the stick
Their right hand about 1/3 the ways downthe stick.
Technique The player should keep their stick on the ball Player should complete same motion as Left
to right dragging
Drag must be completed at quicker speed When rotating stick back onto the flat angle
stick face to allow ball to roll slightly up shaftof stick
Carry ball forward slightly whilst on stickbefore allowing to drop
Coaching Points Ball speed of drag must be quick Jink should be no higher then halfway up
shin Player to use shovel style to lift ball but
hands not to change grip.

1.6 Jinking Right to Left
Grip Players should grip their stick with their left hand
at the top of the stick
Their right hand about 1/3 the ways down thestick.
Technique The player should keep their stick on the ball Player should complete same motion of Right
to Left drag.
Drag must be completed at quicker speed When rotating stick onto reverse angle stick
face to allow ball to roll slightly up shaft of stick Carry ball forward slightly whilst on stick before
allowing to drop
Coaching Points
Ball speed of drag must be quick Jink should be no higher then halfway up shin Player to use shovel style to lift ball but hands not
to change grip.

Section 2: Distribution
The ability for player to distribute the ball is essential at levels of hockey. Players must be able to distribute the ball overvary distances at varying speed.
Distribution of the ball should be simple and effective with players able to distribute the ball on all angles using a variety ofskills.
2.1 PushingThe quickest and most effective way of moving with the ball
2.2 Slap HitControlling the ball and moving it from side to side
2.3 HitEliminating a player by moving the ball Left to Right
2.4 Reverse PushEliminating a player by moving the ball Right to Left
2.5 Reverse SlideEliminating a player by moving the ball Left to Right and in the air
2.6 TomahawkEliminating a player by moving the ball Right to Left and in the air
2.7 OverheadThe ability to flick the ball over players to a team mate.

2.1 Pushing
Grip Players should grip their stick with their left
hand at the top of the stick Their right hand about 1/3 the ways down
the stick.
Technique Player to start with the ball close to line of
their right foot, standing side on to thedirection they wish to push.
The stick starts in contact with the ball. Players to lunge forward (ideally with left
foot out towards the line they wish the ball togo).
The ball should stay in contact of the stick asthey push forward.
On release the right wrist should flex (similarto throwing a ball) to gain power
The follow through of the stick should be lowand around the body.

2.2 Slap Hit
Grip Players should grip their stick with their
hands together at the very top of the stick.
Technique The player should have the ball level with
their front foot (left). The player should be step forward with the
left foot with their right knee almosttouching the ground to get the player low.
A very low backswing is used and the stickshould be brought back through the ballalong the surface.
During the follow through the stick shouldstay on the surface and follow througharound the body.
Coaching Points Make sure hands are together at top of stick sweep style of stick, controlled mainly be

2.3 Hit
Grip When hitting players should grip their stick with their
hands together. The hands are usually positioned slightly down the
grip in a position that allows the player to swing thestick freely and easily.
Technique Player should start almost side on to target with Left
foot forward The player should commence their backswing by
taking the stick around their body with the handsstaying level with the hips.
As the back swing commences the player should step
forward with their left foot towards the ball. At point of impact the left foot should be level withthe ball and the right foot should be behind the line ofthe left foot to aid with balance and rotation.
The distance the ball is away from the player mayvary due to height of player.
Follow through see the stick follow around the playersbody.
Coaching Points Make sure hands are together at top of stick sweep style of stick, controlled mainly be wrists Players should be execute skills very low.

2.4 Reverse Push
Grip Players should grip their stick with their left
hand at the top of the stick Their right hand about 1/3 the ways down
the stick
Technique Player will have the ball in carrying the ball
position Stick should remain in contact with ball Just before making pass will rotate stick over
the ball (make sure stick is still upright) Ball should move just outside the line of the
left foot The push is made by pulling the right hand
(back of hand facing direction ball will go) Ball should flat along surface
Coaching Points
Ball remains in contact with stick Ball is out in front of body when pass ismade
Player to follow through with stick indirection of pass, but no higher then knee

2.5 Reverse Slide
Grip Players should grip their stick with their left
hand at the top of the stick Their right hand about 1/3 the ways down
the stick.
Technique Player to stand with front shoulder side on to
target. Players to bend knees to be low to execute
slide Player to rotate stick in hands so flat side of
stick is facing upwards Small backswing around body and slide stick
along surface to knock ball with edge ofstick

2.5 Reverse Upright
Grip When hitting players should grip their stick
with their hands together. The hands are usually positioned slightly
down the grip in a position that allows theplayer to swing the stick freely and easily.
Technique The ball should in line with the centre of the
body at impact Stick head should move in a half circle
rotation Stick face to be square to direction of hit Player to bend knees and hit ball off either
right or left foot Follow through to be short
Coaching Points Hands are together and slightly down the
stick Short and quick swing is used Player is side on to target at point of impact

2.6 Tomahawk
Grip Players should grip their stick with hands
together Ideally hands will be at very top of stick but
may be slightly down grip if more comfortable.
Technique Player should be set-up at 90 degrees to target Player should have right foot extended towards
ball almost in a lunging action Players swing should come from around body
and impact ball with stick almost parallel withsurface
Ball should impact 5-10cm up stick from thehead, on the side of stick
Follow through should stay low and player notto come up after impact of ball
Coaching Points Swing is controlled Ball is hit with side of stick and part way up the
shaft of stick Player is bending knees to get low for good
impact

2.7 Overhead
Grip Players should grip their stick with their left hand at
the top of the stick Their right hand about 1/3 the ways down the stick
Technique Start with the stick in contact with the ball Left foot should be in a position to be able to step
past the ball The Left hand should be touching the inside of the
right fore-arm Upon stepping the right shoulder comes in behind the
ball Left foot should move to in front of the ball (or close
too) upon picking up ball At point of picking up ball, flex the right wrist (similar
to throwing a tennis) and flick the ball upwards
Coaching Points Body should be low, with right shoulder in behind the
ball Wrist used to supply the flicking action
Experienced players may start with stick not on ball.

Section 3: Receiving
Receiving the ball is a important skill of hockey players of all ages. There are many forms of receivinghowever all receiving should be based around getting the ball quickly into a position to execute thenext skill. With good receiving players are able to set-up the next play efficiently and easily.
Receiving is also crucial in defensive roles as interceptions and turning defence into attack.
3.1 - Fore stick receiveThe quickest and most effective way of moving with the ball
3.2 Reverse stick receiveControlling the ball and moving it from side to side
3.3 Receive with deceptionEliminating a player by moving the ball Left to Right

Technique The player should have their feet apart with the head
of their stick on the ground and in line with the ball. Players should ideally have their left foot forward for
balance. The stick head should remain on the ground to catch
the ball in one movement The ball should be received just behind the line of the
left foot on the head of the stick.

Coaching Points Player moves so head is over the line of the ball when

3.2 Reverse stick receive (upright)
Grip Players should grip their stick with their left
hand at the top of the stick Their right hand about 1/3 the ways down
the stick.
Technique The player should have their feet apart and
side on to where ball is coming with the headof their stick on the ground and in line withthe ball.
Players should ideally have their right footforward
As ball is coming turn stick and keep head ofstick on ground Players must cushion ball in and ball should
be trapped just behind line of right foot
Coaching Points Stick should be angled slightly forward to
stop ball from bouncing up
Players are not adjusting right hand on stickfor trapping Ball should be received on head of stick to
allow simple movement to next skill

3.3 Receive with deception
Grip Players should grip their stick with their left
hand at the top of the stick Their right hand about 1/3 the ways down
the stick.
Technique The players should use either the fore stick
or reverse stick receive technique As ball is coming towards player body weight
should be towards the ball As ball arrives either accelerate forward or
push off foot to drop back and receive ball ina different position
Coaching Points Stick remain close or on the ground
throughout movement Player does not move too early Player is aware of the space to move into
prior to receiving the ball.

Section 4: Tackling
There are several forms of tackling that a player may use to get the ball from the opposition.
Tackling requires a combination of good footwork and sound timing. The ability to win the ball cleanlyback for your team is one of the most important at all levels of hockey.
4.1 Block tackleThe most safe and basic form of tackling
4.2 - Reverse block tackleAn effective way of tackling on the reverse stick side
4.3 Poke/Jab tackleA form of tackling used to reach out and tackle and opponent

horizontal on to the ground so ball carrier runs ontoit.

45 degree angle to knock ball into space after tackle Make sure left wrist is locked for strength. Only left hand should be on stick at point of tackle Players should not sweep at ball or make contact with

4.3 Poke tackle
Grip Players should grip their stick with their left
hand at the top of the stick Their right hand about 1/3 the ways down
the stick.
Technique Players knees should be bent and weight
balanced for quick recovery Left foot should ideally be forward with right
behind for balance Player should wait for control errors before
committing to tackle Lunge forward with left foot to make tackle Right hand should come off stick and poke
tackle is made with left hand on stick only forextra reach
If successful move forward and take the ball If unsuccessful step back into position again
Coaching Points Player picks the best time to make tackle Player is balanced to allow quick recovery Poke is made with only left hand on the stick Both hands return to stick quickly after
tackle.

Section 5: Penalty Corner Skills
Penalty corners are one of the most important aspects of hockey. They provide a great opportunity toscore a goal.
The ability for players to be able to execute at least penalty corner skills is essential in theirdevelopment.
