SKMColinBuchananwascommissionedbytheCounciloftheIslesofScillytoprepareanillustrativeUrbanDesignGuide.Theaimwastodeliveradviceondesignandconstructiontoensurethehigheststandardsforthebuiltenvironmentareachievedontheislands.Thisincorporatedagreatdealoftechnicalinformationanddiagramswhichrequiredawellconsideredlayouttocreateacomprehensive,clearandpracticalguidancedocument.Theoverallappearancewasveryvibrantandaestheticallypleasingtoreflectthespecialcharacterofeachisland.TheguideisnowsoldtothepublicbytheCounciloftheIslesofScilly.
WewereretainedbyStJames’sInvestmentsandTescotodesignaclearandconcisebrochuretobe
submittedsettingoutthekeybenefitsoftheirplanningapplicationforasiteinBexleyheathTownCentre.Wewererequiredtovisuallyguidethereaderthrougharangeoftechnicalinformationtocommunicatetheproposedimprovementsintrafficandpedestriansafetyandenhancementofthepublicrealm.Throughthedesignandusability,thefinalproductwasverysuccessfulingeneratinginterestintheprojectandsetaprecedenceforfurtherdesignworkforTesco.

WeproducedacollectionofvibrantpostersforNATS,anairtrafficmanagementcompanywhichweredisplayedthroughouttheirofficestopromoteincentivesforcarsharingamongitsstaff.WealsorecentlypromotedthelaunchoftheKingstonBusinessDevelopmentNetworkaimedatlocalbusinessestoencouragesustainabletravelfortheirstaff.Thiscomprisedposters,flyersandleafletswhichweredistributedthroughoutthetownanddisplayedatthelauncheventitself.OurworkforSmarterTravelSuttonandTransportforLondon(TfL)alsoinvolvedthedesignofposters,flyersandleafletstopromotetheirBusinessTravelNetworkandrequiredustoadheretostrictbrandguidelinesinordertoretaintheidentityoftheclient.
OtherworkforTfLhasincludedthedesignanddesktoppublishingofanextensiveNetworkManagementPlanningManualandaccompanyingsummaryleaflet,exhibitionpanelsandpromotionalgifts.ThismanualsetoutanintegratedpackageofpoliciesandguidancetoimproveLondon’sstreetsfortrafficandpedestriansalike,andwasaimedattheagenciesinvolvedinthisstrategy.WesuccessfullycommunicatedthroughourgraphicsthecomplexissuesTfLhadanalysedandhowbesttoapproachandsolvethese.

Weco-ordinatedthegraphicsincorporatedinthedevelopmentproposalsforEastfieldUrbanQuarterinWellingboroughwhichincludedanexhibitionandaccompanyingleafletsforapublicconsultationinalocalshoppingcentre.Ourobjectivewastocommunicatetheproposalssetbyoururbandesignandplanningteamstolocalresidentsandworkersinanon-obtrusiveandcoherentmannerandwithaviewtocreatingapositiveimpact.
Wealsoproducedplansanddiagramsfortheschemeaswellaspresentationsforcommunicationtotheprivateandpublicsector.Asaresultoftheconsultationexerciseweobtainedvaluablefeedbackwhichbecameverybeneficialtotheplanningapplication.

Ourexperienceshowsthatthedesignofconsultationmaterialcansignificantlyhelptheengagementprocessbyinformingtheaudienceofproposalsinapositivelightandinaninformativemanner.
Consultationmaterialsandreportsareviewedbyawidespectrumofpeople,rangingfromkeystakeholderswithgoodknowledgeofthesubjectmattersuchaslocalcouncillors,planningofficersanddevelopers,tothegeneralpublicwhomightbelessawareofthepurposeoftheexerciseandassociatedissues.
Thismaterialneedstobepresentedinaclear,conciseandaccessiblemannertoensurethatuniversalunderstandingisachieved.Thisapproachcanbehighlybeneficialasitcanleadtomorepeoplebecominginvolvedintheconsultationprocessandcontributingmoreeffectively-whichistheoverarchingaimofsuchexercises.Gooddesign,therefore,needstobecarefullyconsidered,tailoredtotheaudienceandeffectivelydelivered.
Wehavedesignedarangeofconsultationleafletsincorporatingtear-offfeedbackquestionnairesforTfLschemesinavarietyofLondonboroughs.Thesehavebeensuccessfulincommunicatingtothelocalresidentstheproposedplansforregenerationintheirarea.
WeworkedwithDavidWilsonHomestoproduceadetailednewsletterfordistributionattheirconsultationeventwhichillustratedplanningproposalsfordevelopinglandsouthofMaresfield.Asthiswasacontroversialissueformanyvillagers,asympatheticapproachwasneeded.Thekeytherefore,wastolayouttheproposalsinacomprehensivemannerwhichallowedtheviewertofeelinvolvedandclearabouttheeffectthisdevelopmentwouldhaveontheirvillage.

AspartofSKMColinBuchanan’sentrytoaninternationalurbandesigncompetitionweproducedareport,illustrativediagramsandamasterplantoportraythecompany’sproposalsfortheredevelopmentofthehistoricBundareaofShanghai.
WehavealsoworkedwithaclientinDubaiontwolargescalemasterplanprojectsincludingSmartCityMalta,thecountry’slargestcurrentbusinessdevelopmentprojectandSmartCityKochiinKerala,southernIndia.Forboththeseprojectsweproducedprofessionallyfinisheddocumentsandcomplex
diagramstoillustratetheurbandesignproposals.
Ourgraphicdesigninputintheseprojectshasbeenhugelybeneficialtooururbandesignandplanningteamsbytakingtheirproposalsfromsketchthroughtohighlevelgraphicsoutput.Ourworkwaspositivelyreceivedandhavebeenkeyinthecommunicationbetweenurbandesigner,plannerandclient.
