Online Document and Sharing through Windows Live SkyDrive

Sirui Wang

This tutorial will demonstrate how to create a Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and OneNote notebook in SkyDrive, upload, and share documents with Windows Live Account.

[Introduction]Similar to Google Docs, Windows Live SkyDrive is a free service offered by Microsoft to host files in the "cloud" to all owners of a Windows Live ID. SkyDrive allows user to store, sync and share files with other people and other computers across the web.

[Access Windows Live SkyDrive]Step 1: To access, simply go to the Windows Live SkyDrive page (https://skydrive.live.com/), and enter your Windows Live ID (or your Net passport ID, Hotmail ID) followed by your password to sign in.

If you do not have any of these, you can create a Windows Live ID from the same page, by clicking on the Sign up button for a free Windows Live ID.

If you log in with your Hotmail ID, you can also access SkyDrive by clicking on SkyDrive on the left top of your Hotmail page, as shown below:

After you sign in SkyDrive, it is ready to create documents, spreadsheet, presentation, and notebook within SkyDrive. In this tutorial, the basic steps of creating Word document, Excel workbook, PowerPoint presentation, and OneNote notebook would be demonstrated.

Step 2: On the SkyDrive page (as shown in the left image), choose the a) Files to browse all you have in SkyDrive, b) Then click on Create, in the

Down menu, select Word document to create a new blank word document.

Step 3:c) In the “New Microsoft Word document”

Dialogue box, please type the name you need for your word document.

d) Click on “Create” (the blue button at the right corner) to generate a word document to work with. If a security box pop-up, click “allow” to continue the work.

Step 4: In the image below, you would have all the same tabs and groups in MS Word program. Just type and edit your document in the Document Pane area.

When you finish editing, click on the Save button, your Word document could be saved in SkyDrive.

Use the File button in Word document to Save, Print, Share, Open in Word program, email, protect and close your document. (The File button is different from File menu in SkyDrive. The blue File button is the one in Word document, which is demonstrated in the right image.)

[Create Excel workbook]Step 5: Please follow Step 2 and Step 3 to create a new blank Excel workbook. Give a proper name for your excel workbook, after clicking “Create”, you will be brought to the editing page of Excel workbook as

When you finished editing, please follow Step 4 to save, close, or share your workbook. The File button in Excel workbook is in green color, as shown in the image above. After you

close the finished Excel workbook, you would be directed back to the File page in SkyDrive.

[Create PowerPoint presentation]Step 7: Please follow Step 2 and Step 3 to create a new blank PowerPoint presentation. Give a proper name for your excel workbook,

after clicking “Create”, you will be brought to the selection of theme in PowerPoint presentation as shown in the right image;

Click “Apply” to apply the theme to your presentation, and then work with PowerPoint presentation, as shownin the image below.

When you finished editing, please follow Step 4 to save, close, or share your presentation.

The File button in PowerPoint presentation is in red/orange color, as shown in the image above. After you close the finished presentation, you would be directed back to the File page in SkyDrive.

[Create OneNote Notebook]Step 8: Please follow Step 2 and Step 3 to create a new blank OneNote notebook. Give a proper name for your OneNote notebook, after clicking “Create”, you will be brought to the editing page of OneNote notebook as shown below:

When you finished editing, please follow Step 4 to save, close, or share your presentation. NOTE: there is no Save button in OneNote notebook in SkyDrive, which would be saved automatically the web app.

The File button in PowerPoint presentation is in purple color, as shown in the image above. After you close the finished OneNote, you would be directed back to the File page in SkyDrive.

[Manage Your Files]Step 9: On the Files page, all folders, documents, workbook, presentation, and notebook you have created in SkyDrive would be listed. You can manage them by checking/ multi-checking files.

there would be several options as shown in the image below; from here, you can download, share, embed, rename, delete, and move your files in SkyDrive.

[Create Group]Step 10: Click on “Groups” on the SkyDrive main page (as shown below) to bring up your groups in SkyDrive. Then click “Create Group” to create a new group.

Step 11: After clicking “Create group”, you can give a name to this group, and add people to this group by inserting their email address. After providing all those information required by creating a group, click on “Create” at the bottom to generate a new group.

As indicated in the image below, a group named as “ITSA-Instructional Technology Student Association” has been under “Groups”. Files and documents in this group would be listed there.

[Sync your files in SkyDrive with your PC]Step 12: By clicking “PCs” on SkyDrive page, you can sync your files with PC.

Click “Download SkyDrive for Windows”, the SkyDriveSetup program would be automatically downloaded from SkyDrive to your PC/ laptop (Windows-based); after downloading, you can both have your files on web and local computer.

Follow the 12 steps above, you can use SkyDrive to create, share, and sync your files! Hope you like Windows Live SkyDrive!
