A MESSAGE FROM THE STAGE D IRECTOR AND ARTISTIC D IRECTOR – B ILL THE ISEN
White. A blank page or canvas. The challenge: bring order to the whole.Through design.Composition.Tension.Balance.Light.And harmony.
These intriguing, yet curiously disjointed words are the first thing we hear as the curtain rises. They are in fact George Seurat’s aesthetic creed and serve as a thematic framework both for the artist’s life and the structure of Sondheim’s musical. Just as the artist Seurat atomized blocks of color into dots, the artist Sondheim fragmented his lyrics and musical themes. Both artists juxtapose their primary units in varying combinations to achieve both aesthetic and emotional shade and intensity. Sondheim finds his metaphor for Seurat’s use of pure color in subtle impressionistic harmonies and diatonic chord clusters. On this subject, Sondheim in his own words: “The idea was to keep the music open and pure the way the painting is and to give it a shimmer. I was also fiddling with chord clusters, because that seemed to me some kind of analogue to Seurat’s close juxtaposition of different colored dots.”
In his most recent book Look, I Made A Hat, Sondheim talks about the fact that Sunday in the Park with George was his first experience in the world of not-for-profit theatre. Of this experience Sondheim recalls, “For me the shock at the difference between commercial and non-profit theatre was a pleasant one. This difference affected not only the score for Sunday in the Park with George but my subsequent scores as well. When I look back as objectively as I can at shows I wrote before Sunday, and contrast them with the shows I wrote after Sunday, it seems clear to me that a quality of detachment suffuses the earlier work, whereas a current of vulnerability, of longing, informs the more recent work. When I think of songs like “Sunday” or “Move On”, I realize that by having to express the straightforward, unembarrassed goodness of the characters, I discovered the Oscar Hammerstein in myself- and I was the better for it.”
At heart, I think this show is about the amazing things that can happen when we pause in our work- take a breath, a sideways glance- and life suddenly appears as a blank canvas, filled with unlimited possibilities. And it is also about the challenging emotional work that goes into making ourselves available to these moments.

A MESSAGE FROM THE M ANAGING DIRECTOR – A MY S. JENSEN
Welcome to Skylight Music Theatre and our production of Stephen Sondheim’s, Sunday in the Park with George. I know that Bill has been itching to bring Sondheim back to the Cabot for many years. Sondheim featured rather prominently in our repertoire during the 1980s and 1990s, but has not graced our stage since 2000 and our production of A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum. It is a little hard to believe that this is the first time Skylight is performing Sunday in the Park with George and it is all the more fitting that we end a season full of shows that Skylight has never done before with this Sondheim masterpiece.
As we bid farewell to yet another season, we are so excited about our 2012-13 season and equally excited about our subscribers’ response. Our subscription sales are outpacing the past several years and we had the strongest first week in well over five years. If you haven’t yet subscribed, don’t miss out on the opportunity to include Avenue Q, The Sound of Music, Edith Piaf Onstage, Pump Boys and Dinettes and Porgy and Bess in your plans next year. With our new Spectrum Plus package, you can also add our two Studio shows Here’s a Howdy Do: The Mischievous World of Gilbert and Sullivan and Sing Me a Story and see all seven shows next season.
For the second time this season, Skylight marked the passing of yet another remarkable individual who provided invaluable support to Skylight through the years. Don Buzard, who passed away on April 15, was a former board member, serving on the board from 1971 to 1985. In response to the news of Don’s passing, Colin Cabot emailed saying “though he wasn’t president of the board, he was the one who took the longest view towards the survival of the theatre both during and after Clair’s tenure… I doubt the theatre would have lived past its second decade without his advice and support.” We share our deepest sympathies with his family.

SK YLIGHT MUSIC THEATRE C IRCLE OF DONORS
Skylight recognizes and honors, with our deepest gratitude, the following individuals, foundations, organizations, businesses and government agencies who provided support to our Annual Campaign and helped us to deliver high quality music theatre productions to the Greater Milwaukee community. A special thanks to the members of the Clarion Society, who have made multi-year commitments of pledging $5,000 or more for the Annual Campaign (these members are listed as bold). Our thanks too, for the many donors of $249 and under whose gifts are vital to Skylight’s continuing success, we regret there is not space to list them all. (This list is current as of April 20, 2012.)
