WELCOME

It's been a packed few months here at Skypark and it's set to be an even busier summer, with a new creative space being launched; some exciting new tenants moving in and our No Siesta Fiesta on 15th June – more details on this and a charity abseil down the building (eek!) on pages 6 & 7, as well as news on what else is happening on-site and what our tenant community has been up to.

In this issue we've also got a feature on two ladies who keep Skypark running smoothly and who work exceptionally hard to create fantastic on-site events and promotions and keep our tenants happy – Lisa Kirsop from Skypark's management suite and Kelly Naylor, our concierge and event manager. You'll know them already but find out how they support the tenant community and make Skypark one of the best places to work in Scotland.

There's also the chance to win a fantastic prize on page 5, thanks to Rainbow Room International. Don't forget to enter the competition and win a consultation, cut and colour with a senior stylist to the value of £150. What better way to start to your summer holiday?

As our tenant community continues to grow, collaborate and forge some great working partnerships, Skypark is becoming an even more exciting place to work. Working here is not just about having an office, it's about helping to create a community and we'd just like to say thanks for being a part of it.

See you at the No Siesta Fiesta! Best wishes

Welcome to the latest edition of Skyline, which we've given a community theme, to celebrate the vibrant and rapidly growing community at Skypark. It just keeps getting bigger and busier!

Issue 5: Reinventing the workplaceIssue 6: Building a community

In this edition of Skyline we meet Cameron Hood, chief executive and founder of NVable, an IT solutions company based at Skypark.

NVable was established in 2005 and moved to its current space in Skypark in 2008. It now has 10 staff based at its Skypark office. Cameron (pictured) and his team think they have an enviable (no pun intended!) location with stunning views out over the city centre and Kingston Bridge.

NVable was founded as an IT consultancy and bespoke software developer, setting out to harness latest technologies to solve complex business problems. Cameron has a background in consultancy businesses and, from the outset, knew what kind of service he wanted to offer and how NVable would stand out from the crowd.

NVable was founded on strong principles of straight talking, no jargon advice. The team likes to get alongside a business and understand the root of any problems so the right solution can be applied.

Past customers come from a variety of sectors including rail transportation, aviation, education services and health. National and international businesses sit side by side with local small to medium sized enterprises.

From its roots in IT consultancy and software development, NVable is now extending its reach to include broader business consultancy and support as well as turning its attention to developing its own range of IT products to address business issues.

Cameron highlights how one of NVable’s key initiatives, the Appixo™ platform, was created to address the issue of managing “Big Data” – or for the uninitiated very large amounts of information. NVable’s new Appixo™ platform transforms “Big Data” into a valuable information source without the need to invest in an IT infrastructure.

Cameron says “Big Data is a big issue in the IT industry and I thought it would be useful to share our insights. Our business provides real business solutions using information technology. What makes us tick is providing real solutions for real problems delivered when it matters! And we have been coming across the challenges of Big Data across our customer base for quite some time.

“Bearing this in mind we developed the concept of Appixo™ at the end of 2011, based on our experience and current research, to address three new challenges facing business;

More information is now being recorded than ever before – what’s more, it is geographically dispersed and can be recorded on a variety of increasingly sophisticated mobile devices.

Data is not what it used to be –

Tenant Focus: NVableBig Data? No Problem!

historically, data was generally well structured. That is why relational databases (RDBMS) were developed but it is now the case that there is more data being collected which cannot be structured in a simple fashion. Additionally, the sheer volume of data causes problems.

The data is more important than ever– data needs to be turned into information and insight. It is no longer an option for businesses to ignore this. Used properly this intelligence drives new opportunities and competitive positions. And if your business doesn’t do it, another one is just around the corner that will!

“We have helped many companies achieve insight from their data. But the team at NVable felt challenged to create one flexible managed solution focussed on streamlined data acquisition and large scale data analysis. We wanted to make it simpler and more cost effective for businesses to tackle the problems. From this, Appixo™ was born.

“Appixo™ brings a unique offering to the market that is targeted at two areas:

Flexible, mobile data acquisition – the platform has the ability to accept data from virtually any device capable of data capture, or by interfacing with existing systems or data recorders.

Large scale data analysis – the combination of a managed IT infrastructure (designed for growth) with ability to utilise the public cloud ensures the platform is extremely flexible and responsive.

Cameron finishes “All of this is delivered in a way that allows customers to enjoy many unique benefits of Appixo™ without needing to invest in the IT infrastructure or the expertise that it demands.”

Current and prospective customers of NVable are already starting to learn about the many benefits to be offered by Appixo™. If you’d like to join them, contact NVable direct by calling 03333 440952 or by e-mail to [email protected]

Skypark’s lovely friends at Rainbow Room International are offering one lucky Skyline reader the chance to win a fantastic prize just in time for the summer holiday season – a consultation, cut and colour with a senior stylist to the value of £150 at their Great Western Road salon.

The Rainbow Room International team is busy prepping for another T in the Park, with its Artistic Team having worked its magic on the stars’ hair at Scotland’s biggest music festival for the past six years. Based in the VIP area of the main Artist’s Village where they provide the stars with their hair expertise over the three days of festival fun, they work tirelessly backstage each day and style the hair of many of the musicians. Despite the usual wind and rain, the weather never dampens the stylists’ spirits and the RRI backstage salon is one of the main attractions within the Artist’s Village.

If you’d like the chance to win a consultation, cut and colour by a Rainbow Room International senior stylist to the value of £150, simply answer the following question:

How many years has Rainbow Room International been the stylist at T in the Park for?

Please email your answer to [email protected] by 30 June 2012. The winner will be notified by Friday 6 July

As you all know re-modelling works are well under way at Skypark – thanks again to everyone for bearing with us!

The site is undergoing a multi-million pound refurbishment to reposition the main entrance and upgrade the reception areas to create Scotland’s first ‘business hotel’ concept, with five star services and Kelly our fully trained hotel concierge based at reception.

Never one to stand still, we’re also getting ready to launch several new types of exciting workspaces, one of which is our new creative space to meet the needs of creative businesses.

V.Ships, a company that supplies management services to the shipping and marine sector, has circumnavigated the first Glasgow Shipping Community & Associates ten pin bowling competition and networking event attended by over 90 people.

Organised in March by Lorraine Bell and Elaine Turnbull of V.Ships, the event was attended by 12 Glasgow-based shipping companies including Skypark residents V.Ships, Seatec and Lloyds Register along with a team from Skypark’s management office.

Lorraine Bell of V.Ships explains, “We decided to hold a bowling themed event to increase the networking opportunities for people of every ability within the shipping community. The teams were split over several lanes to encourage the companies to mix, although team scores were combined to obtain an overall score.

“We have had fantastic feedback on the event. Well done to the winners and a huge thank you to everyone that took part. The RNLI will also benefit from a charity collection gathered on the evening. We are aiming to make this an annual event so here’s to the same time again next year!”

The overall winning team was CMAL and Andy Campbell of V.Ships achieved the most strikes and the highest individual score – go Andy! The best male player was Liam Duffy of CMAL and the best female player was Sarah Hulme of V.Ships.

Skypark explains, “We carried out research last year to find out exactly what companies wanted in a bid to expand our offer and attract new types of companies on-site.

“We found that the creative industry is one of the most buoyant sectors in Scotland at the moment and our new space will provide an open-plan, collaborative workspace for a number of established business and agencies. The space will be located in SP3 and is an exciting development for Skypark as it will allow us to attract even more tenants from this vibrant sector.

“Our ethos is to build a thriving business community for all tenants to enjoy. A programme of social and networking events and amenities such as fitness classes and beauty services are available on-site. On completion of the refurbishment in autumn 2012, Skypark will be the best place to work in Scotland!”

Watch this space for our next announcement on the creative space - all will be unveiled in the next few months. For more information on the refurb and tenant services contact Kelly on 0141 221 5164

Next month, George Bowie from Radio Clyde will be swapping his decks to abseil ‘LIVE ON AIR’ down the 140 ft Skypark 1 – and it’s all for two great charities Cash for Kids and Barnardo’s.

The charity abseil is part of the fun for our No Siesta Fiesta summer site social and this time twe will be marching to a Latino beat! Skypark tenants and their friends and family are invited to this fantastic event on 15th June, 3pm – 7pm, in the Lower Cranston Street car park, with free tickets from Kelly at Skypark’s main reception. The Fiesta will feature Latino-themed cocktails (food and drinks vouchers on arrival), Brazilian BBQ, dancers, shopping and family fun.

Angela Higgins asset manager at Skypark says “We’re delighted to host No Siesta Fiesta and support two brilliant children’s charities Cash for Kids and Barnardo’s. The event follows on from last year’s success and it’s all about taking some time out to have fun and meet new tenants.

We’ve had an amazing response to the abseil with over 100 people signed up to take part!”

Ailsa Sharkey of Barnardo’s says “There are 6 of us from Barnardo’s participating in the abseil to help raise public awareness for both Barnardo’s and Cash for Kids. Although there have been previous abseiling events at Skypark, this is the first time that any of us have taken part and we are all very excited. This event will allow each of us to face a personal challenge as well as having the opportunity to raise funds for charity. Working for Barnardo’s we know the difference that a charity can make to a child’s life. Barnardo’s Scotland works directly with over 10,000 children, young people and their families in over 98 specialised projects in local communities across Scotland. We believe in the potential in every child and young person, no matter who they are, what they have done or what they have been through. We will support them, stand up for them and bring out the best in each and every child. By sponsoring us, you can help turn a child’s life around”.

George Bowie of Radio Clyde says “I love abseiling and I’m really looking forward raising lots of cash for the Radio Clyde Cash for Kids charity. The charity does great work and raises funds to benefit the most vulnerable children in local communities across Glasgow and the west of Scotland. Every penny goes to the charity so please get roped in and join me for the abseil and help give vulnerable children living in poverty a chance in life. Come on you can do it!”

“Radio Clyde Cash for Kids is working with a number of agencies to focus on early intervention and to ensure that all of our most vulnerable children have better opportunities, but to continue our work we need to increasingly raising more funds, and 2012 is likely to be one of our most challenging years. Our vision is to be the most recognised local children’s charity within West Central Scotland, supporting the most deprived local children to make a longer term difference to their lives. The charity aims to deliver exciting and innovative fundraising events together with emotive campaigns both on and off air. The true-life motivational and inspiring stories of the children we assist are conveyed on air to the Radio Clyde listeners and CfK supporters to ensure that the everyone is kept up to date on what they have helped us achieve, not least our ambitions for the future.

Thanks to the Hunter Foundation, every penny donated to Radio Clyde’s Cash for Kids goes directly to children who need it most. No money from donations is ever used for administration and this further enables us to meet the ever-growing demand. Children in desperate need in over 24,000 families and over 520 community support groups for children have received a grant in 2011 from Cash for Kids – totalling 100,000 children. We are truly grateful to all who help us achieve our objectives.”

As customer service manager Kelly ensures a wide range of services run smoothly, from City Car Club, ATM, dry cleaning, alterations, to shoe repair and key-cutting services, fitness classes, monthly site socials and pop up shops.

Kelly explains Skypark’s community ethos and how services combined with great childcare enable her to work and spend more quality time with her daughter.

“Employees still come into work wanting to be part of a group, to exchange ideas and information and to connect in person. The majority of people now spend more time at their work than they do at home, so having an enjoyable working environment is so important in helping you achieve that work /life balance. By investing in great services we help people to manage their busy lifestyles, free up their own personal time without impacting on work.

“The team listens to what tenants actually want, as opposed to what they think they want. Skypark ran a survey last year which resulted in tenants asking for services such as dry cleaning, prescription delivery, fitness classes and beauty services. All of which have now been brought onto site. They don’t just listen to the tenants they act on it as well.

“I spend on average 50 hours a week at work, and being a working mum this can sometimes be such a juggling act. Because I spend such long hours at work every minute I can spend with my daughter is precious so the fact I can drop my dry cleaning off at work, or pop in and have my eye brows waxed on my tea break or even take part in a fitness class on my lunch hour makes sure that my time outside of work can be spent with Ellie.

Find out what’s new and how you can get involvedMeet Lisa Kirsop and Kelly Naylor - the ladies at the heart of the Skypark community.

Following a tenant survey in 2010 you told us that you wanted better customer services and to be part of an on-site community. Since then, Lisa and Kelly have been beavering away behind the scenes – Kelly leads on customer services and Lisa is tenant services administrator.

Lisa and Kelly reveal what they get out of the Skypark community and what opportunities there are for businesses - whether setting up a furniture exchange for other tenants, or a new business networking opportunity – read on to find out how you can put your ideas into action!

Kelly Naylor is Skypark’s concierge and mum to 20 month old Ellie

who attends the Four Seasons Nursery on-site. As concierge, Kelly is the welcoming face at reception who not only knows what’s happening on-site but is embracing the wider community of small businesses and children’s charities ensuring that Skypark connects with these organisations.

“One of the great things about Skypark is having such a fantastic nursery on-site, I can pop in and see Ellie whenever I want and knowing that she is so close by is a real comfort. The level of care is outstanding and she genuinely loves going to nursery which helps take the pressure off me when leaving her.

“The fact Skypark is so close to the train station is such a bonus, especially when you are commuting to and from work with a small child!”

Lisa Kirsop, Skypark’s tenant services administrator is spearheading the development of a business networking group at Skypark while encouraging the on-site business

community to do their bit for local good causes. She’s been nurturing a growing interest in Skypark as a venue for art exhibitions, big events such as Social Media Week and even as a film set for pop bands and TV companies.

Lisa explains, “Skypark is a fun place to work as we are able to get so many great ideas off the ground that help tenants, good causes and the creative community.

“We’re aiming to launch a business networking group and we’re keen to encourage tenants to come forward with their ideas – we know there is a demand from the results of the tenant survey. It could be an informal breakfast or even a coffee break - we will help host and promote these events on and off site and in Skyline where you could win a bottle of champagne for your team if your business networking idea is featured!”

“As well as fundraising, businesses are encouraged to recycle and donate unwanted furniture and equipment to others in the Finnieston community. A VIP discount card will launch soon and will boost local businesses while tenants will benefit from a range of discounts and promotions.

“We support Finnieston youth groups such as the Anderson Youth Café and donated 300 Christmas presents for local children as well as materials for Mark Lyken the graffiti artist to paint a mural for the Anderston Youth Café. In 2011 Skypark tenants raised £3648.06 and O2 at Skypark alone raised £72,871.26 in phone donations for Red Nose Day. “There is a growing awareness of Skypark as an iconic venue. The partners support the work of up and coming bands and film makers by donating space. This month rock band Edens Curse filmed on-site and Skypark is to be the hub for Social Media Week 2012 following last year’s success – watch this space for more details. The Glasgow International Festival of Visual Art, group exhibition Petrosphere, was held in the basement of Skypark 1 and we also hosted a temporary art gallery by Art Pistol from 4th to 14th May. From the 7th June we are hosting an art fair for the YWCA featuring artist Clare Crines as well as number of other well known local artists, and for the first time, the GSA Design School Degree Show will be held in Skypark 5.”

“We’re always keen to hear feedback but we need our tenants’ support to help this great community thrive! To find out what’s new and how you can get involved contact me at [email protected]

With summer almost here, it’s looking set to be a busy few months at Skypark, with lots of work being done to finish the refurbishment; the launch of our brand spanking new creative space, (see page 5 for more on this) and a fantastic Latino-themed summer site social on 15 June... the No Siesta Fiesta! Now all we need is some sunshine...

You won’t have been able to miss the renovation work going on lately at Skypark, most noticeably to the entrance ramp and the reception area. This work has been done to improve access and also Skypark’s ‘front of house’, creating an accessible and welcoming entry point to the building that gives the best possible impression for our tenant community and their visitors, guests and clients. The refurbishment is an ongoing part of our programme to make Skypark the best place to work in Scotland, so we hope you like the improvements now that we’ve ‘ramped them up.’...

This month, the Think Big Forest launched at O2 at Skypark, and will act as an information point for everyone in Glasgow on how to get involved with Think Big. Head of site, Julie Collins, who cut the opening ribbon, said: “the stands are completely unique to our Glasgow office and will draw attention to the range of very worthwhile support that Think Big is giving to young people and schools in the Greater Glasgow area, making it easier for our people to get involved.”

Also on-site, O2’s Easter Egg amnesty was extremely popular and the team was overwhelmed by the number of eggs donated. The Think Big team has worked with the local social services department to distribute the eggs to young people who wouldn’t normally receive one.
