Dear Friends,
I remember one night at our homeless shelter that impressed me. It was freezing and the snow wasfalling as 15 homeless men shuffled into the dining hall in the Parish Center.
A family arrived carrying in a meal to serve them. The men are always grateful for whatever we do because they don’t have much, and anything we serve they chow down eagerly.
But this night was different. This family had really prepared an exceptional gourmet meal for the men. It had everything – steak, potatoes, salads, all the fixings, and wonderful exotic desserts. Tonight was no plate of mac and cheese – it was going to be a full-scale banquet! Everyone’s eyes opened wide in surprise and the mood turned festive and joyous.
The family was delighted everybody was thoroughly enjoying themselves and they knew they had donethe right thing.
They had gone above and beyond what was strictly necessary – they gave the best they possibly could. When I asked them why they had gone to so much trouble when less would have been just fine, theyjust said, “God blessed us so much we want to say thanks”.
It made me think that God is just like that with us. The take-away line from the wedding feast at Canasays it: “He saved the best wine for last”, referring to sending his Son, Jesus. He is always generouswith us and pours out his best graces and blessings on us.
But we’re not always that way in return. Sometimes we do the bare minimum and take a lowestcommon denominator approach to God. I’ll do what others do, just enough to get by. It happens overand over – we are late to Mass, are distracted, forget to pray, worry all day about ourselves and don’tthank God, and we close in and see other people as obstacles or nuisances.
Why do we sometimes think that way? What keeps us from the generosity we should show to God andothers?
One thing I picked up fast about that family is that they lived their lives in gratitude for all they had. They saw everything they had as a blessing from God and a gift they didn’t deserve. And they knew they had to give back, so others could experience the goodness of God as they had.
Maybe if we saw all we have in that light, it would help us all be more generous with our time and ourthings. Shall we give it a try?
Sincerely,
Fr. Richard Gill

newest staff membermusic directorpeter ryanPeter Ryan is a recent graduate from Western Connecticut State University with a bachelor’s degree in music, with an emphasis in vocal performance. He has been singing inchurch choirs since he was a small child with his family in Watertown, CT, and started taking piano lessons at age six. He has also played the trumpet for over a decade and has been teaching lessons in these fields for a couple of years. He frequently plays gigs with his family’s worship band, Hands & Feet, handling keyboards, synths, and lead vocals. He began writing contemporary Catholic worship music in 2017, and is in the process of publishing his first album.
Hands & Feet began seven years ago as the St. John the Evangelist Life Teen Band, Watertown, CT. Since then, they have grown tremendously. Together as musicians and as a family in faith, they have had the privilege of playing events such as the Mountaintop Mass at the Holy Land USA in Waterbury, CT and the Connecticut Catholic Mens’ Conference.
Peter is very active in his faith outside of music as well, bring-ing the message of Christ’s love to people in all walks of life. Through his comprehensive knowledge of theology, and the practice of prayer, he loves conversing with people about God just as much as he loves to make music for Him.
coming back to mass saved my lifeMichael Tarr
I grew up in a Catholic home. I was baptized and went to church and CCD until I made my First Holy Communion. I ended up leaving the Church shortly after that. You see, I was born with a genetic condition that has symptoms that gave me attention issues. I was distracted and disruptive and ended up leaving the Church. I always believed in God and prayed to him but sometimes they were “fox hole” prayers —like please God, if you get me out of this I will never do this again. I thought if I asked God for help, he would make everything OK. They were empty promises.
I went through school fighting and misbehaving and after high school I hit a really dark depression. I thought God abandoned me. He was punishing me. Why couldn’t I be like everyone else. I didn’t fit in. I didn’t know what to do so obviously I rebelled even more by moving farther away from God to the point where I was doubting that there really was a God.
At that point I was so depressed and in a dark place in my life that I wanted to give up and end it. I woke up one day and for some reason I looked up the Mass schedule and went to a morning Mass. I felt at peace and knew I needed to reconnect with God. Shortly after that I found out about Alpha and the Men’s Ministry and joined both. SInce then my connection to God has never been more clear. More-over, I made my Confirmation at this Easter’s Vigil and even joined the Knights of Columbus.
I work very hard to live everyday in God’s grace and know that this is the way my journey was to be. I am very happy to be part of the Church and it has saved my life.

Soccer camp craft: prayer box and sand art
heaven is our goal!soccer campCecilia Britez
If you give a mouse a cookie, he will ask you for milk….if you give some kids a soccer ball, they will ask you for a game! That is exactly what happened here at our Soccer Camp at St. Lawrence! The energy was always high, the AC’s were blasting and half of the kids on the court were wearing yellow pinnies and had their best sport spirits ON! Some passing, stealing, kicking, maneuvering of the ball and stretches, everyone was ready to play!
Every new day of camp offered an opportunity for a new game of soccer! From our CIT’s to our 4 year olds, everyone was excited to play and then to rest. Days at camp were intense, so we had to give them some rest while watching some soccer movies, enjoying some popcorn and ice-cream Fridays!
Our craft and play room were also a blast. Everyone had the chance to paint some soccer related rocks or frames. We also made some cool bean bracelet with an “I love soccer” pin. Special thanks to all our soccer coaches! Thank you ladies and gentlemen for taking time off and sharing your talents with us!
