Catherine Prieto Olivarez, M.Ed. (Lambda Class, Epsilon Chapter) sister is pursuing her Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Higher Education at the University of North Texas. She is currently in her first year (second semester) of coursework in the program. This is what Catherine had to say about her experience: My husband and I moved to Denton to attend the University of North Texas and resigned from our full-time positions in San Antonio to complete our educational goals. I currently hold a part-time graduate assistantship on campus and attend classes full-time. Here, at UNT, because I am attending full-time, I have been able to engage with the program more than I ever did as a Master’s student at my previous institution. I am very happy that I chose not to become employed full-time while completing this degree. I admit that it’s rough, financially, for both my hubby and I; but in the end we will complete our degrees much sooner! The classes aren’t tough, but when you tack on a full-time job, and full-time life, the demands pile up and can seem overwhelming. I had that experience in my master’s program and made the choice not to experience that again. In the program, one of my faculty mentors – Dr. Amy Fann – has been wonderful in allowing me to explore the research areas that matter to me and that I want to be part of. She has a research team in the program that specifically aims to assist Latino parents and families in accessing and obtaining college information and increase their college knowledge. I am always asked three questions when people learn that I am pursuing a doctorate. I am going to say that none of these questions are easy

to answer. First – what is your research going to be on? I’ve known for some time that I wanted to continue research on Latino students in college, but I will be honest and say that I still haven’t narrowed down my possibilities yet (I LOVE learning new things, I am a nerd!). Second – when will you be finished? I have a goal to be completed by December 2015, but that date is tentative. Third – What do you want to do when you are done? What I am going to do after I earn my Ph.D. is still a mystery! I would love to be a faculty member and teach Higher Education courses to other budding, young professionals in the field; but, if I find a well-paying administrative position, I am open to that as well. I just want other sisters out there, who are interested in pursuing graduate school, to send me a shout out, via Facebook or email ([email protected]). I went through this process really unsure of how to get funded and what types of scholarships or assistance are out there. From this experience I want to share with other sisters what I have learned and help them as much as I can.
