TI technology enables Truescorestaekwondo electronic scoring system
Company:Truescore Inc.
Challenge:Taekwondo, a martial arts sport and
Olympic event, is traditionally scoredby judges. To award a point, judges
must determine not just i a blow was
landed, but i it had sufcient impact.
The games blazing speed makes
this highly subjective. Truescore Inc.
decided to improve that with an elec-
tronic sensing and scoring system.
Solution:Using data rom an innovative
multi-sensor system embedded in a
protective vest, Truescores sophis-
ticated algorithms are executed byTexas Instruments (TI) ultra-low-power
MSP430 16-bit microcontrollers that
also handle baseband processing,
creating a highly reliable system that
is more accurate than human judges.
Truescores system also includes TIs
CC2520 ZigBee IEEE 802.15.4 RF
transceiver, which provides a robust
radio requency (RF) link despite inter-
erences in the 2.4-GHz band, which
are resolved with requency agility.
Customer beneft:The electronic system is more
accurate than human judges and
eliminates the subjectivity that
creates contention. Truescores third-
generation product also attenu-
ates the RF intererence common in
competition venues. Using TIs chips,
evaluation kits and technical support,
Truescore had a working prototype in
less than two months.
The challenge
When Truescore ramped up to design
an electronic judging system or
the sport o Taekwondo in which
contestants score points by landing
oot or fst blows to an opponents
torso or head the design team was
presented with an impressive porto-
lio o unusual and unique engineer-
ing challenges. The impact rom a
legal strike must be substantial, or
example, so points are not awardedor glancing blows, partially blocked
kicks, head butts, or elbow contact.
The electronic system had to be ast,
without compromising the agility o
the competitors. It also had to be ac-
curate, lightweight, inexpensive and
battery efcient - the battery must last
or at least 20 hours o continuous
use beore a recharge.
The application
Truescore saw a ew dierent op-
portunities to build rom. Contestants
are required to wear a protective vest,
called a hogu, along with headgear,
gloves and ootgear, all o which could
accommodate an ultra-compact sys-
tem o sensors, radio, batteries and
a microcontroller. Although action is
lightning ast (potentially

TI has been very instrumental in helping us to move quickly without having tospend months on a learning curve. When we had to evaluate some eature ordesign concept, they were right there. Ive worked with TI or 10 years and
technical support has always been phenomenal. In the beginning, when I frst
proposed my application, they did not ask questions like whats your volume?
Instead, I had the kind o response I would normally expect rom a small com-
pany that really wants to win your business, Jin Song, Truescore CEO

voids all express and any implied warranties for the associated TI component or service and is an unfair and deceptive business practice.TI is not responsible or liable for any such statements.
Buyer acknowledges and agrees that it is solely responsible for compliance with all legal, regulatory and safety-related requirementsconcerning its products, and any use of TI components in its applications, notwithstanding any applications-related information or supportthat may be provided by TI. Buyer represents and agrees that it has all the necessary expertise to create and implement safeguards whichanticipate dangerous consequences of failures, monitor failures and their consequences, lessen the likelihood of failures that might causeharm and take appropriate remedial actions. Buyer will fully indemnify TI and its representatives against any damages arising out of the useof any TI components in safety-critical applications.
In some cases, TI components may be promoted specifically to facilitate safety-related applications. With such components, TIs goal is tohelp enable customers to design and create their own end-product solutions that meet applicable functional safety standards andrequirements. Nonetheless, such components are subject to these terms.
No TI components are authorized for use in FDA Class III (or similar life-critical medical equipment) unless authorized officers of the partieshave executed a special agreement specifically governing such use.
Only those TI components which TI has specifically designated as military grade or enhanced plastic are designed and intended for use inmilitary/aerospace applications or environments. Buyer acknowledges and agrees that any military or aerospace use of TI componentswhich have notbeen so designated is solely at the Buyer's risk, and that Buyer is solely responsible for compliance with all legal andregulatory requirements in connection with such use.
TI has specifically designated certain components which meet ISO/TS16949 requirements, mainly for automotive use. Components whichhave not been so designated are neither designed nor intended for automotive use; and TI will not be responsible for any failure of suchcomponents to meet such requirements.
