Delabole Hospital Car Service Urgent Appeal for Volunteer Drivers We started this vital service, for Delabole residents only, in March 1986 - 34 years ago. In all those years I have successfully managed to get a driver for everyone who needed to get to a medical appointment (even at Christmas) until one day last month. All the drivers were out on the same day, in different directions (Bodmin, Hayle, Derriford, Treliske etc) and a village resident needed to get to Barnstaple Hospital. I then tried everyone on the list who said they would drive in an emergency but, as it was a long trip, to no avail. I then even tried my relatives and friends. Then I turned to the Cornwall Hospital Car Service but they only had one driver who could come to Delabole and he could only stay for a one hour appointment at the hospital, if it was longer he would have to leave. He said he could not guarantee to get back but, if he did, the patient would have to pay for a double trip which would end up costing around £70. This was the only time in 34 years that I could not help. I felt so sorry for the patient so this is why I am urgently appealing for more volunteers who can help, especially in an emergency . To offer help or just find out more about how much you will receive for different hospitals, doctors etc phone me on 01840 212520 Tricia Hicks

A Methodist Minister’s ViewWe are living in unprecedented times with the World in turmoil because of the Coronavirus pandemic. As I write this inmid-March it is difficult to see how things are going to work out for us over the coming weeks which include MotheringSunday and Easter.I imagine that all of us feel trepidatious about the coming days and increasingly it seems we will be restricted in differingways. I cannot ever remember a time for instance when all professional sport was stopped and air links between somecountries brought to a halt. We live in a ‘Worldwide Village’ in the normal everyday life of travel, trade and communication.Solutions will need to be found for the way forward for some of our supplies such as food and medicines, let alone thereliance of industry on parts coming from differing parts of the World. It all looks a bit worrying. However, some things in our local communities are heartening – I have heard of three of our local businesses who areoffering to deliver goods. Already new possibilities are opening up so be encouraged amidst the chaos. As I was thinking these things through, I was drawn to Psalm 46 in our Bibles. These words have been around for manyyears and have inspired some of our hymn writers. Martin Luther’s hymn, “A safe stronghold our God is still”, written in1529 has been translated into 183 languages, and a contemporary hymn written anonymously is based on the closingverses of the Psalm. The three verses are of three repeated lines which are: -

1. Be still and know that I am God2. I am the Lord that healeth thee3. In Thee, O Lord, I put my trust.

Richard Bewes’ hymn ‘God is our strength and refuge, our present help in trouble’ sung to the Dambusters March isalso based on the Psalm. The closing verses of the Psalm from the ‘Message’ translation of the Psalm are helpful where it is written –

Attention, all! See the marvels of God!He plants flower and trees all over the earth…..

Step out of the traffic! Take a long lovingLook at me, Your High God, above politics,

Above everything.Jacob-wrestling God fights for us,God of Angel armies protects us.

Let these words encourage us all at this difficult time. In the midst of it all I hope that Easter is the best that it can befor you. Bryan Ede

Termyn Gwari Fleghes(children’s playtime, in Cornish)

April feels like Spring is really here – we hope to see flowers, new leaves, summer birds like swallows, bees and butterflies, nests, eggs and chicks. All kinds of new life is everywhere we look, and if the weather actually warmsup then it is such fun to be outside, admiring the countryside waking upproperly from the winter dullness and grey.

One of the very special things you might find are bird’s eggs, usually thebird’s nests are very well hidden, but if you do find one, please don’t pickup or touch the eggs or baby birds. The parent birds are very likely to leavethem, and then of course they will die. You can watch the nest from adistance, so that you can see what happens without disturbing the birds.

Easter is this month as well, one of the important festivals of the year. Wethink of eggs especially at Easter and the activity this month is an Eastercolouring competition. Make sure you use bright cheerful colours to matchthe lovely colours of Spring! I hope you enjoy doing it.

Dog Fouling is Foul part 2It seems that the feature on dog fouling in the March issue of The Delabole Slate has raised some issues. Please let us have your views, comments or experiences.

I received my copy of the Slate last Saturday morning, breakfast time. The front page article was very welcome. Foulinghappens quite often outside my bungalow in Trebarwith Road and I have made two signs with dog fouling posters stuckon them. It was not a big surprise, when ten minutes later I started to walk down to Lugg’s Garage to get my Saturdaypaper and there, outside my bungalow right next to one of the signs, I find dog fouling.Seeing is believing, summing-up the whole of your front page article, a picture is worth a thousand words. Thanks forthe Slate. Ron D Batt. Photos: Ron D Batt.

Thank you for highlighting the problem. Can you add this to next months Slate please.

YOU KNOW WHO YOU ARE. QUARRY WALK.We are really fortunate to have such a wonderful place to walk our dogs and a dog bin is provided. However, there is an owner/walker of a very large dog (I am assuming this due to the size of the poo their dog leavesbehind) who never picks up after their dog. It is very visible on the paths so I struggle to think you don’t see it happening. My guess is you either walk early morning (before 7am) or at dusk, when there are less people around.I suggest you re read last months Slate and remind yourself,

WATCH YOUR DOG - SOMEONE MAY BE WATCHING YOU..........Thank you.Name supplied

DOGGY MINDFULNESSDear dog owners of Delabole,This is a polite request that whilst you are in residential areas, could you please keep your dog(s) on a lead at all times.Dogs that are left to walk down residential streets off leads have a tendency to wander about all over the place andurinate (and more) wherever they see fit. It’s not acceptable to allow your dog to wander into peoples driveways andgardens to urinate. It then gets walked straight into the house of the person who owns that property. Please bear this in mind if your dog is cocking its leg against someone else’s gateway too - even if it is still street side!Adults don’t walk in and out of gardens for the sake of it and we teach our children not to do the same, as it’s seen astrespassing and respectful not to do so. However, people seem to think that the rules are different for dogs and I don’tknow why. Perhaps people should be applying the same boundaries to their dogs as they do to themselves and theirchildren. It’s great to see some dog owners keeping their pets on a short lead but many others seem rather nonchalant and blaséabout what their dog does and where and who its effecting. Those of us who don’t have dogs, cherish the cleanlinessof not having dog urine and excrement all over our outdoor spaces. There is also the issue of dogs urinating on recycling bags that usually go back into peoples’ houses. One of mine livesin my kitchen and the thought of it drenched in dog urine is disgusting. If you have your dogs on a lead, then you havea chance of stopping it cocking its leg in an inappropriate place. This also eliminates the chances of a dog doinga “No. 2” and it being missed by a distracted owner or out of sight in someone’s garden! Finally, dogs are also not road wise and it’s rather worrying for drivers to see dogs free to just suddenly run into the road. This happened to me once and I was incredibly lucky not to collide into a parked car as although my speed was verylow, I was turning a corner and skidded on wet roads and sharp breaking. If I had damaged someone’s vehicle I am surethat my insurance would have had to take the hit!If you see dogs off leads in residential areas, please could you gently and politely remind the owners of this request in“The Delabole Slate” newsletter. There is plenty of open rural space around Delabole to allow your dogs to run free. Many thanksA Delabole resident (Name provided)

This month’s Bible verse

April

And being found in fashion as a man, [theLord Jesus Christ] humbled himself, andbecame obedient unto death, even thedeath of the cross.

Wherefore God also hath highly exaltedhim, and given him a name which is aboveevery name:

That at the name of Jesus every kneeshould bow, of things in heaven, and thingsin earth, and things under the earth;Philippians 2:8-10

Acquaint now thyself with him, and be atpeace: thereby good shall come unto thee.Job 22:21

King James Bible

Camelford and District Old Cornwall Society. On March 9th we had a lovely evening with Jacky Nowakowski telling us all about Tintagel, the castle, the history andits people from an archaeologist's eye view. The aerial photographs were beautiful and showed us the site from a differentperspective. We wondered why so many people, over millennia, had built houses, traded and made a life for themselves, and their families, on an outcrop of rock jutting out from mainland Dumnonia (the name given to Cornwall, Devon, Dorsetand a part of Somerset back in the 5th century.)With the weather as it has been, wet and windy for months, we wonder if the fields will ever dry out and allow the farmers, and their animals, to get back on the land. Farming has never been an easy life but with bad weather, economic worriesand seasonal uncertainties it becomes ever more difficult. Our speaker on April 13th will be Terry Faull who will tell us about a time when farming got so bad that riots broke out.'The Agricultural Workers Riots of 1830' will give us an insight into how bad things got, and what changes were broughtabout by this uprising. It promises to be another illuminating evening. We had several visitors to our meeting in March and look forward to seeing more in April.Visitors are charged £3, listen to an interesting talk, have a cup of tea, as many biscuits as they can eat, and receive awarm welcome from our members.Join us and learn things about Cornwall you never knew. Mandy will join us for herfirst meeting in April.Housing Need Survey – The closing date for the consultation for the housing needs survey finished on the 10th March2020. Thank you to everyone who responded online or returned their response by post. By the time the magazine isprinted the result should have been sent to the Parish Council, Ward Member and published on the Cornwall Councilwebsite.Governance Review – The Cornwall Council Governance Review panel are now concluding their recommendationsas the process has now gone through Stage 3 of the consultation and the final public meeting in Wadebridge that washeld on the 27th February 2020 . It appears that the parish of St Teath will split from the elections in May 2021 andDelabole will become a parish of its own. There is much work to be done to finalise the new parish boundaries, numberof councillors and the legal and admin process. If you have any questions or concerns please do not hesitate to get intouch.Parish Seats – We have over 30 seats throughout the parish that are maintained by the Parish Council. Three are tobe replaced owing to their deterioration over the years and these will hopefully be in place over the next few weeks.Delabole Millennium Clock – The clock has been repaired and is now telling the correct time. A new electric mechanismhas been installed that should prevent any further problems. However, if there is a power cut, the clock will restart exactlytwelve hours after the time it stopped.Traffic calming – Over the past three years, Cllr Dominic Fairman (Cornwall Councillor) has worked with CornwallCouncil to design traffic calming schemes for both villages. Funding is one of the main issues why these schemes havenot been implemented, but we remain hopeful that proposals for Delabole will move forward as soon as possible.Future Meetings. The date of next Full Council meetings are:-Tuesday, 7th April 2020 at St Teath.Tuesday, 5th May 2020 at DelaboleMeetings start at 7.00pm and members of the public are welcome to attend.Jenny HoskinClerk to St Teath Parish Council

Scott Mann MPAt the time of writing I am looking forward to the annual Treasury budget. The budget will not only be the first for thenew majority Conservative government, it will also be the first one delivered by our new Chancellor, Rishi Sunak. Overthe previous few weeks, I have considered what asks I will be making as a priority for North Cornwall and spoken toconstituents, colleagues and council representatives. It’s clear to me that the Camelford bypass project is at the top ofthe list for this year’s budget, and I have been on the front foot taking this forward with the Chancellor and the TransportSecretary. North Cornwall’s transport infrastructure needs upgrading. Under successive historic governments and whilerepresented by previous MPs, our local rail and road systems were not given the attention they demanded and deserved.Prior to my first election, I pledged to fight for a Camelford bypass, a road project that has been discussed for almosta century. After the election, I immediately set to work, and many of you joined me in signing my bypass petition. Sincethen, and during the two subsequent election campaigns I have continued to give it my full support. Now that the constraints imposed upon the previous government due to Brexit delay are a thing of the past we are ableto move forward, and I am pushing on behalf of North Cornwall to get this project signed off in Westminster. MyConservative colleagues and I stand on our record of delivery for Cornwall; ensuring that the A30, our most vital road,is duelled all the way from Exeter to Hayle. I know we can achieve similar success with Camelford and the bypass.North Cornwall needs this project. It is not only vital for supporting economic growth and its potential as a transportroute, but we also need it for air quality and safety reasons. The people in Camelford overwhelmingly support the bypass, and I was very pleased to see how many residents came out for the public consultation earlier in the month. The budget also gives Members of Parliament the opportunity to state other long-term priorities such as the NHS, andthe levelling of education funding for our children. Prior to the general election, the Prime Minister pledged that the nextmajority Conservative government would pledge £450m to Cornwall for new NHS primary care services. I am thereforevery pleased that the seed funding (which is the first stage of the programme) is in place and we are now awaiting theNHS to put forward different plans for how they propose to use the pledged £450m. I am looking forward to workingwith the NHS as we deliver on this pledge, but I have also made it clear to them that I want the people of Cornwall tohave the chance to have their say via a consultation process. I look forward to updating readers again in the spring.

Delabole Fire Station(New for 2020 - a regular update from our local fire station)March has been a busy month for us at the station. We have just completed our yearly exercise at one of our stationground risks and this year we have attended a persons reported fire at Saputo (formerly Dairy Crest). This type ofproperty has many risks for crews and running exercises at such premises ensures, if we do have an incident at thislocation, that both the crews and staff have some knowledge and experience of how we can minimise risk ensuringwe carry out our roles as safely as possible. We have a varied balance of risks in our station ground and we will be visiting these premises this month to updateour risk information and build relationships with these businesses. We would like to thank those involved for what canbe a time consuming but very worthwhile experience. This month has also included our yearly station operational audit, in which a team visit the station and audit ourappliance, paperwork, knowledge and operational awareness to make sure we are continuing to uphold the highstandards expected of us. This audit holds the management and crews to high expectations and demands us to achievethe best we can be with the equipment we have available to us. The theme for the drill this year was a bed and breakfastwhich had two missing casualties and required crews to wear breathing apparatus in a smoke filled property to searchfor and rescue them. We were lucky enough to use the Delabole Methodist church this year which enables us tochallenge the crews in unfamiliar surroundings. We would like to thank the members of the church for the use of theproperty as off station training is difficult to acquire. Lastly we have a station visit to accommodate this month with StPiran’s Playschool attending to give some fire safety input and hopefully, if the weather holds off, a chance to get holdof the hose reel and spray some water around,I would like to take this opportunity to thank the crews of Delabole for their continued commitment in serving theircommunity and this recent busy period.

Memories of a Farming Childhood in 40s and 50sAt the start of the war my Father and other local farmers helped to cart off the bulldozed hedges as the Treliggaaerodrome was made. This was eventually staffed by WRENS and every weekend a couple of them would stumbleacross the dark fields to join my parents for supper, chat and music on the wind up gramophone. This also helped toliven the lonely blackout evenings for my Mother with two small children and my Father often out on Home Guard duty; After the war was over my Father did a deal with the Ministry of Defence. With lambing and calving finished, severalhundred head of livestock needed extra grazing. This also kept the grass short on the aerodrome which was thenstaffed by sailors and used as a firing range by the Fleet Air Arm from I think it was St Merryn and St Eval naval bases. There would be a shrill ring on the one and only telephone in the hall and my Father had an hour or so notice to shiftall the stock back onto the farm. He would set off with Moss the sheepdog and shout 'Away to me' and off Moss wouldshoot right round the airfield bringing back all the animals through the gate to the safety of the Beach Field. My sister and I spent many hours sitting on the garden wall entertained by the planes screaming in down over Treliggaletting fly with their load of bombs or machine gunning at the old army tanks used as targets before they soared upagain and away out to sea. I well remember the day the tanks arrived from Delabole station. My Mother and I had setoff for our daily walk up the road, she pushing my sister in the big old pram and me with my dolly's pram and Susy theCairn terrier on a string. As we went along the narrow top road towards Tregragon there was a terrifying rumbling andclanking approaching us and my Mother frantically shouted 'quick get up the bank' as she hauled the pram with mysister up the steep bank and I managed to haul my dolly and more importantly Susy the dog up. Just as well, as thevolunteer drivers struggled to control the unfamiliar monsters with lack of brakes. Those same tanks now painted white caused another emergency amongst the young calves. Several started tomysteriously sicken and die and it was a while before the vets diagnosed lead or arsenic poisoning. Calves and alsocows love to lick anything metal and in fact will often swallow foreign bodies such as old nails or staples which puncturetheir guts and they die. They also have a habit of licking and swallowing stray polythene bags which cause a similarblockage. This is why farmers are so against those Chinese lanterns which float up in the air and come down in themiddle of a field somewhere. My Father used to tell me how when he was young it was common for cows to die of 'awire' because the cow whilst being milked would turn round and give the dairymaid an affectionate lick and removeand swallow their hairpins. One of my most vivid memories is of St Teath church at Easter in the days when every roadside was covered in wildprimroses. Every pew and windowsill in the church was completely covered in moss and masses of primroses andjars of daffodils. The choirboys processing down the aisle behind the cross dressed in their white surplices singing'Jesus Christ is risen today, Alleluiah'. As we left to go home the bells peeled out across the village and maybe thepossibiliity of a large chocolate egg waiting for us at home. However as sweets were still strictly rationed more likelywe had breakfasted on eggs with silly faces drawn on them or maybe coloured pink having been wrapped and boiledin onion skins,April with masses of daffodils brought in from the orchard; catkins, pussy willows, hawthorn in flower, jars of tadpoles, birds nesting, weeds sprouting, last of the vegetable garden to be planted and maybe the first swallows arriving. Springsoon to turn into summer and an end of winter storms.
