Dreams are successions of images, ideas, emotions, and sensations that happen involuntarily in the mind during certain stages of sleep. The content and purpose of dreams are not definitively understood, though they have been a topic of scientific speculation and a subject of philosophical and religious interest throughout recorded history. The scientific study of dreams is called oneirology. Scientists believe that other, non-human mammals, as well as birds, also dream.

Dreams can last for a few seconds, or as long as twenty minute.Person can see three to five dreams per night, but some people may see dreams in one night. The dreams tend to last longer as the night progresses. During a full eight hour night sleep, two hours of it is spent dreaming. Some philosophers have concluded that what we think of as the "real world" could be or is an illusion. The first recorded mention of the idea was by Zhuangzi, and it is also discussed in Hinduism, which makes extensive use of the argument in its writings.

Dreams can at times make a creative thought happen to the person or give a sense of inspiration. In Judaism, dreams are considered part of the experience of the world that can be interpreted and that lessons can be garnered from. Christians mostly shared their beliefs with the Hebrews and thought that dreams were of the supernatural element because in Old Testament was stories of dreams with divine inspiration. Many Christian men preached that God talked to his people through their dreams. The most common emotion experienced in dreams is worry.Negative emotions are much more common than positive ones.

A nightmare is an unpleasant dream that can cause a strong negative emotional response from the mind, typically fear or horror, but also despair, worry and great sadness. The dream may contain situations of danger, discomfort, psychological or physical terror. Sufferers usually awaken in a state of distress and may be unable to return to sleep for a prolonged period of time.

Freud suggested that bad dreams let the brain learn to gain control over emotions resulting from distressing experiences.

Jung suggested that dreams may compensate for one-sided attitudes held in waking consciousness.

Ferenczi proposed that the dream, when told, may communicate something that is not being said outright.
