Europe is Leading the Mobile World

Harmonised standards is key for success!

GSM was chosen as a Pan-European standard and now it completely dominates the world

3G is following in GSM’s footsteps and is becoming a success

US Situation

Multi-standards (TDMA, CDMA, IDEN) gives– Fragmented market– Move expensive products– Less export for US companies

Has lead to that US now also is using GSM and European 3G

However, US is marketing this multi-standards approach calling it “Technology neutrality”

Standardization future

Europe should continue its leadership and build on success from GSM and 3G harmonized standards

We shall avoid the fragmentation that incompatible multi-standards would give

Harmonization leads to

- better service for end users (e.g. Roaming)

- Lower cost for equipment (higher volumes)

- Competition by multiple operators
