angle efficiency 3(angle efficiencies continued on last page 31)

SLING TO LOAD ANGLE EFFICIENCY1. Sling working load limits whether nylon, wire rope or chain slings are rated with their

respective vertical, choker, and basket capacities. When selecting these slings, careful consideration must be made for the proper sling to load horizontal lifting angle. The greater angle to sling configuration will result in a reduction of sling efficiency and a loss of rated work load limits! - SEE ILLUSTRATION:

Example: Using the above reference, load lifted is 10,000 lbs.

(A) at a 90° sling to load angle the sling is at 100% of the WLL.

(B) at a 60° sling to load angle a loss of 14% efficiency occurs and the sling is capable of lifting only 8,600 lbs.

(C) at a 45° sling to load angle a loss of 30% efficiency occursand the sling is capable of lifting only 7,000 lbs.

(D) at a 30° sling to load angle the working load limit isreduced by 50% and the sling is capable of lifting only 5,000 lbs.

2. To further illustrate the stress to load angle perform the following experiment. Take two pails and fill each full of water. Pick them up and evenly hold at your side. You will experience very little or no stress. Now raise your arms up to shoulder height, and hold steady for as long as you can. You have just experienced a change of stress to load angle lifting!

3. ALWAYS use a larger angleof lift when selectingyour sling.

4. NEVER use less than a30° sling to load lifting angle.

SYNTHETIC SLINGSNylon, Polyester Web or Polyester RoundFlexibility, weight, strength, and non-marring properties make syntheticslings the most sought after slings for contractors and riggers alike!Because of these inherent features, extreme caution as to selection, care and general use must be exercised. Observe all pertinent instruc-tion provided by OSHA and ASME. Adhere to manufacturers warnings, recommendations, and guidelines. FAILURE TO DO SO COULD RESULT IN INJURY OR DEATH!

Unaffected by grease or oils, plus having a good resistance to chemi-cals such as ethers, alkalis, and alcohols, the nylon sling is the mostwidely used and best general purpose sling today. Refer to "GuideOnly" and contact manufacturer for additional information.

CHEMICAL ENVIRONMENT DATA - “guide only”

SELECTION/CONSIDERATIONS:1. Determine the load of lift. Sling selection must be within the work load

limits and proper hitches.2. Adequate sling length must be established for proper sling to load angle

consideration. (See sling efficiency chart)3. Balanced load control not only is essential but critical in preventing slippage

and maintaining center of gravity load control!4. Prior to making lift, calculate and experiment with any sling movement.

Failure to balance or control the load will result in damage, injury or death!5. Refer to environmental chart for proper material selection or contact

manufacturer for proper use.6. Always use wear pads or sleeves to further protect and promote increased

sling life.

CARE AND USE:• Inspect daily before each use.• Do not drag or pull sling from under load.• Keep dry and store inside on racks.• Do not shorten by tying knots, or twisting.• Never use when temperatures are –40° F or exceed 194° F.• Stand clear of load at all times.• Avoid shock loading.• ID tag must be legible for proper work load limits.• Consult manufacturer for more information.

Nylon and Polyester feature theadvanced process of incorporat-ing a series of red warning mark-ers woven into the core of thewebbing. When the sling body oreyes become worn, cut or dam-aged the red yarn becomesexposed and affords the user theopportunity to remove the slingfrom service.

Important Warning: It is the owner and usersobligation to familiarize himself with all local, state, and fed-eral regulations. The responsibility and choice lies strictlyin that decision. All tie-downs and assemblies are only asstrong as their weakest components or attachments.FAILURE TO COMPLY WITH GUIDELINES MIGHT RESULT IN PERSON-AL INJURY, CARGO DAMAGE OR DEATH. Consult with D.O.T.,Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations, “O”, Title 49, sec-tion 392.9, Part 393, subpart 1 - 202-512-1800.

Selection: D.O.T. (Department of Transportation)requires that the aggregate work load limit of the tie downassemblies used to secure an item must be at least 1/2 theweight of the object being secured.

EXAMPLE: Object tied down is 24,000 lbs. 1/2 of weight is equal to12,000 lbs. Using a 2” tie down with a WLL of 3,335 lbs.

FORMULA: 50% of the object weight Divided by WLL of the tie downequals the number of assemblies required to secure the load

CONCLUSION: Per D.O.T. regulations, it will require a minimum of four,2” wide ratchet tie downs to secure a 24,000 lbs load.

ADDITIONAL CONSIDERATIONS:a. Determine weight of the cargo to be secured.b. Select web tie down suitable for the type of load.c. Consideration must be given to the angle from the vertical

attachment.d. Assembly shall be attached so as to provide control of the load.e. Assembly must be attached to components equal in strength

as the tie down.f. Never use a tie down for overhead lifting or towing.g. A minimum of two (2) wraps of webbing shall be on the winch

or ratchet buckle mandrel. Caution: additional wraps will reduce the working load limit.

h. Tie downs should regularly be checked and adjusted during the transportation of cargo.

Capacity Ratings - All breaking strengths are based on the load an assembly will withstand before fail-ing. Working Load Limits are rated at one-third (1/3) of the ultimate break strength of the assembly. All ratingsare based on a straight tensile pull. Load directions other than straight can result in a significant reduction in strength.

Inspection -All assemblies should be inspected before each use. Straps worn, cut or damaged in any wayshould not be used. Clean and lubricate to ensure that tie-downs are in proper operating conditions. Observe ID tag warnings.

HOW TO ORDER (See pages 15 & 16 for various styles and types)

1. Determine load rating desired.2. Choose ratchet style (equal to load ratings)3. Establish required length.4. Pick choice of end fittings (equal to load ratings)5. Add corner protectors or wear sleeves.

24 Wire rope

wire rope WIRE ROPE

Wire rope is made of wire strands and a core. The center wire isa round shaped wire used as the body member. Around this body mem-ber a group of wires are helically laid to form a strand. The strandsare supported by the core, thus making up what we refer to as the wirerope diameter, which is utilized in manufacturing our wire rope slings.

The greater the number of wires in a strand the more flexibility in thewire rope. The lower or less amount of wires in a strand the stiffer the wirerope. The center core may be made with a polypropylene Fiber Center(FC) or with a steel Independent Wire Rope Center (IWRC).

Our established standard in manufacturing wire rope slings is by theuse of a unique 6 x 26 steel core construction promoting both flexibilityand high resistance to abrasion. Utilizing the highest grade of steel com-monly referred to as an Extra-Improved Plow Steel (EIPS) constructionto further provide you with superior load ratings, increased design factor, and ultimately the highest breaking strength in a wire rope sling!

In an ever-changing global market, we also offer you the customer the"preferred" choice of domestic or imported wire, compromising neitherquality workmanship, nor designed operating work load limits.
