SOIL NAIL NOTES:

1. MATERIALS

A. GROUT: ASTM C 476, NEAT CEMENT (PORTLAND CEMENT TYPE I OR II AND POTABLEWATER), WITH A MINIMUM COMPRESSIVE STRENGTH (FROM MORTAL CUBES) OF 4000 PSI AT28 DAYS CURE IN ACCORDANCE WITH ASTM C 109. THE GROUT SHALL CONTAIN SUITABLEADMIXTURES TO IMPROVE FLOWABILITY AND CONTROL BLEEDING.

B. REINFORCING STEEL: REINFORCING STEEL SHALL BE A GRADE 75 (ASTM 615), #8 HOLLOWBAR. COUPLERS WHICH DEVELOP FULL TENSILE CAPACITY OF THE REINFORCING MAY BEUSED TO SPLICE THE REINFORCING STEEL.

C. DRILL BIT: DRILL BITS SHALL HAVE A MINIMUM DIAMETER OF 4.5 INCHES.

2. EXCAVATION FOR SOIL NAILS SHOULD BE MADE IN VERTICAL LIFTS TO ACCOMMODATE THEVERTICAL NAIL SPACING INDICATED ON THESE PLANS.

3. WHERE COLD JOINTS BETWEEN VERTICAL LIFTS OF PERMANENT STRUCTURAL GUNITE ARECREATED, THE PROCEDURE FOR FINISHING CURING, ROUGHENING AND RE-APPLYINGGUNITE AT THE COLD JOINT SHOULD BE IN ACCORDANCE WITH ACI-506R-06.

4. HOLES FOR SOIL NAILS SHALL BE DRILLED TO THE DIAMETER, DEPTH AND LINE AS INDICATEDON THE DRAWINGS. THE HOLE SHALL BE DRILLED SO THAT ITS DIAMETER IS NOT MORE THAN14 INCH SMALLER THAN THE SPECIFIED DIAMETER. HOLES SHALL BE DRILLED AT ANINCLINATION AS SHOWN ON THESE DRAWINGS. TOLERANCES FOR DRILL HOLE LOCATIONSHALL BE +ONE FOOTFOR HORIZONTAL AND VERTICAL POSITION AT THE SLOPE FACE ANDWITHIN 2.5 DEGREES OF THE SPECIFIED SOIL NAIL GRADIENT.

5. HOLES SHALL BE CLEANED TO REMOVE MATERIAL, RESULTING FROM DRILLING OPERATIONS.WATER FOR CLEANING HOLES SHALL NOT BE USED UNLESS APPROVED IN WRITING BY THEGEOTECHNICAL ENGINEER.

6. SOIL NAILS SHALL BE INSTALLED IN DRILLED HOLES IN A EXPEDITION MANNER SO THATCAVING DETERIORATION OF THE DRILLED HOLES DOES NOT OCCUR.

7. WHERE THE SOIL NAIL CANNOT BE COMPLETELY INSERTED, THE CONTRACTOR SHALLREMOVE THE BAR AND CLEAN OR RE-DRILL THE HOLE TO PERMIT UNOBSTRUCTEDINSTALLATION. PARTIALLY INSTALLED BARS SHALL NOT BE DRIVEN OR FORCED INTO THEDRILLED HOLE AND WILL BE REJECTED. WHEN OPEN-HOLE DRILLNG METHODS ARE BEINGUSED, THE CONTRACTOR SHALL HAVE HOLE CLEANING TOOLS ON SITE SUITABLE FORCLEANING DRILLED HOLES ALONG THEIR FULL LENGTH JUST PRIOR TO BAR INSERTION ANDGROUTING.

8. AT LOCATIONS WHERE CAVING CONDITIONS ARE ANTICIPATED, SUFFICIENT CASING ANDAUGER LENGTHS SHALL BE AVAILABLE ON SITE TO MAINTAIN UNINTERRUPTED INSTALLATIONOF SOIL NAILS OR SOLID BARS MAY BE REPLACED WITH SELF-DRILLING BARS PER THEPROCEDURES AND DETAILS ON THESE PLANS.

9. THE LENGTH OF DRILLED HOLE SHALL BE VERIFIED AND RECORDED BY THE INSPECTORBEFORE GROUTING.

10. SOIL NAIL FABRICATION AND HANDLING:

A. TO THE EXTENT PRACTICABLE, SOILS NAILS SHALL BE SHOP FABRICATED. SOIL NAILS SHALL BEHANDLED AND PROTECTED IN SUCH A MANNER AS TO AVOID CORROSION AND PHYSICALDAMAGE THERETO.

B. CENTRALIZERS SHALL BE USED DURING INSTALLATION TO SUPPORT THE SOIL NAIL IN THECENTER OF THE DRILLED HOLE. CENTRALIZERS SHALL BE SPACED AT A MAXIMUM OF 7.5 FEETON CENTER ALONG THE LENGTH OF THE BAR, AND A MAXIMUM OF 18 INCHES FROM THEEND OF THE BAR.

11. SOIL NAIL PLACEMENT:

A. PRIOR TO PLACEMENT, SOIL NAILS SHALL BE FREE OF DIRT, DETRIMENTAL RUST OR ANYOTHER DELETERIOUS SUBSTANCES. DRILLED HOLES SHALL BE CLEARED OF ANY LOOSE ROCKFRAGMENTS, SOIL OR OTHER SUBSTANCES WHICH MAY PREVENT THE PROPER PLACEMENTOF THE SOIL NAIL OR GROUT.

B. SOIL NAILS SHALL BE PLACED IN ACCORDANCE WITH RECOMMENDATIONS OF THEMANUFACTURER. SOIL NAILS SHALL BE SECURELY FASTENED IN PLACE TO PREVENTMOVEMENT DURING GROUTING AND TO ASSURE THAT THE BOND LENGTH OF THE SOIL NAILIS CENTRALLY LOCATED IN THE DRILL HOLE.

12. GROUT PREPARATION AND PLACEMENT:

C. GROUT SHALL BE PUMPED INTO THE SOIL HOLE THROUGH A TREMIE GROUT TUBE PROVIDEDBY THE CONTRACTOR FOR THAT PURPOSE UNTIL THE HOLE IS FILLED TO THE TOP OF THE SOILNAIL ZONE.

D. THE CONTRACTOR SHALL GROUT THE DRILLED HOLE AFTER INSTALLATION OF THE SOIL NAIL.GROUT SHALL BE INJECTED AT THE LOW END OF THE DRILLED HOLE AND SHALL FILL THEDRILLED HOLE WITH A DENSE GROUT FREE OF VOIDS OR INCLUSION OF FOREIGN MATERIAL.THE CONTRACTOR

E. SHALL COMPLETELY GROT THE DRILLED HOLE IN ONE CONTINUOUS OPERATION. COLDJOINTS SHALL NOT BE USED IN GROUT PLACEMENT. PROVISIONS SHALL BE MADE FORDETERMINING THE TOP OF THE GROUT TO ASSURE ADEQUATE SOIL NAILAGE.

F. ANY REMAINING VOID AT THE EXTERIOR END OF THE DRILLED HOLE FOR PRODUCTION SOILNAILS SHALL BE FILLED WITH GUNITE, AND THE SOIL NAIL SECURED AT THE FACE OF THEGUNITE. THE STEEL BEARING PLATE SHALL BE SEATED WITH FULL BEARING ON THEGUNITESURFACE, AND THE NUT FOR THE SOILNAIL SHALL BE HAND TIGHTENED BEFORE THEINITIAL SET OF THE GUNITE.

G. ONLY THE BONDED LENGTH OF TEST SOIL NAILS SHALL BE GROUTED.

H. SOIL NAILS SHALL BE INSTALLED AND GROUTED IN THE SAME WORK SHIFT AS THE DRILLINGOPERATION.

I. AFTER GROUTING, THE SOIL NAIL SHALL REMAIN UNDISTURBED UNTIL THE MINIMUMSPECIFIED GROUT STRENGTH HAS BEEN ATTAINED AND VERIFIED BY GROUT CUBE SAMPLETESTING.

GUNITE NOTES:

1. THE DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION OF THE GUNITE SHALL CONFORM TO THE REQUIREMENTS OF THE2006 INTERNATIONAL BUILDING CODE (IBC) SECTION 1908.

2. GUNITE SHALL BE APPLIED BY AN EXPERIENCED NOZZLEMAN WHOSE QUALIFICATIONS MEET THEMINIMUM REQUIREMENTS AS SET FORTH IN ACI 506R-05.

3. EXCEPT AS OTHERWISE INDICATED HEREIN, GUNITE SHALL CONFORM TO THE REQUIREMENTS OFACI 506R-05

4. SUBMIT MIX DESIGN TO ENGINEER FOR APPROVAL MAXIMUM SLUMP: 2 1/2" NO ADMIXTURES SHALLBE USED WITHOUT THE APPROVAL OF THE ENGINEER.

5. THE MIXING TIME FOR MATERIALS DELIVERED BY READY-MIX TRUCKS TO THE JOB SITE SHALL NOTEXCEED TWO HOURS OR 250 REVOLUTIONS OF THE DRUM, WHICHEVER COMES FIRST

6. ALL REINFORCEMENT SHALL BE CLEAN AND FREE FROM LOOSE MILL SCALE, LOOSE RUST, OIL OROTHER COATING INTERFERING WITH BOND.

7. THICKNESS AND REINFORCEMENT COVER TOLERANCES: DESIGN CONCRETE THICKNESS ANDCONCRETE COVER OVER REINFORCEMENT IS SHOWN ON THE DRAWINGS. MINIMUM TOLERANCESFOR IN-PLACE THICKNESS SHALL BE MINUS 0.5 INCH. MINUS TOLERANCE ON COVER SHALL BE 0.5INCH.

2. PERFORM SCALING OF THE SLOPE FACE BY REMOVING POTENTIALLY UNSTABLE BOULDERS,ROCKS,AND TREES TO REDUCE THE ROCKFALL HAZARD AND MINIMIZE REQUIRED MAINTENANCEAFTER CONSTRUCTION. PERFORM SCALING AT THE DIRECTION OF THE ENGINEER. BEGIN SCALINGAT THE TOP OF THE SLOPE AND PROCEED DOWNWARD. EITHER STABILIZE OR SCALE ALL LOOSEROCK AND OTHER UNSTABLE MATERIALS LARGER THAN ONE CUBIC FOOT (0.03 CM) IN VOLUMETO THE SATISFACTION OF THE ENGINEER. OBTAIN APPROVAL FROM THE ENGINEER BEFORE USINGPOWER EQUIPMENT TO PERFORM SCALING. REMOVE AND DISPOSE OF ALL WASTE MATERIAL FROMBETWEEN THE BOTTOM OF THE SLOPE AND THE EDGE OF THE ROADWAY. REMOVE OVERBURDENMATERIAL ABOVE THE ROCK FACE TO ROUND THE TOP OF THE SLOPE BEFORE SCALING WORK ISCOMPLETE.

3. CONTRACTOR SHALL PROTECT PERSONNEL, THE PUBLIC, ADJACENT PROPERTIES, STRUCTURES,UTILITIES, AND ROADWAY FROM INJURY OR DAMAGE CAUSED BY SCALING ACTIVITIES. THECONTRACTOR’S SCALING WORK PLAN MUST BE IN PLACE BEFORE BEGINNING THE SCALINGWORK. ANY INJURIES OR DAMAGES CAUSED BY SCALING ARE THE RESPONSIBILITY OF THECONTRACTOR.

4. INSTALL THE ANCHORED WIRE MESH ACCORDING TO THE MANUFACTURER’S RECOMMENDATIONSWHEN THEY DO NOT CONFLICT WITH THE PLANS OR SPECIFICATIONS.

HAVE A REPRESENTATIVE FROM THE ANCHORED WIRE MESH MANUFACTURER ON SITE FOR AT LEASTONE DAY AT THE BEGINNING OF THE SLOPE DRAPE INSTALLATION WORK TO TRAIN AND PROVIDEGUIDANCE ON THE INSTALLATION OF THE ANCHORED WIRE MESH. HAVE THE ANCHORED WIREMESH MANUFACTURER INSPECT THE INSTALLED DRAPE AND SUBMIT TO THE ENGINEER OF RECORDA STATEMENT DECLARING THAT THE ANCHORED WIRE MESH WAS INSTALLED ACCORDING TO THEMANUFACTURER'S REQUIREMENTS AND RECOMMENDATIONS.

6. CONNECT THE WIRE MESH AND CABLE NET TOGETHER BEFORE PLACING THE ANCHORED WIREMESH ON THE SLOPE. SECURELY FASTEN THE WIRE MESH TO EACH CABLE NET PANEL AND TO THELACING. FASTEN THE WIRE MESH AND CABLE NET SO THEY ARE FLUSH WITHOUT ANY GAPS THATEXCEED 4 INCHES (100 MM). NO DISCONTINUITIES IN THE WIRE MESH ARE ALLOWED. ATTACH THEMESH EVERY 12 INCHES (305 MM), HORIZONTALLY AND VERTICALLY, USING GALVANIZED STEELFASTENERS, APPROXIMATELY 0.148 INCH IN DIAMETER (US STEEL WIRE GAUGE 9, 0.377 MM), AFTERCOATING. USE FASTENERS THAT HAVE A CONNECTION STRENGTH EQUAL TO OR GREATER THANTHE STRENGTH OF THE MESH.

7. CONNECT THE CABLE NET PANELS USING 3/8 INCH (10 MM) LACING CABLE (SEAM ROPE)THROUGH EACH SQUARE OF THE NET. LOOP THE END OF THE SEAM ROPE BACK ON ITSELF ANDSECURE IT WITH TWO 3 8 INCH (10 MM) ROPE CLIPS. PLACE THE WIRE MESH BETWEEN THE SLOPE ANDTHE CABLE NET. PLACE THE SLOPE DRAPE SO IT FOLLOWS THE CONTOURS OF THE SLOPE ANDMINIMIZES GAPS AND LARGE SPACES BETWEEN THE DRAPE AND THE GROUND SURFACE. SECURETHE TOP OF THE SLOPE DRAPE TO A TOP HORIZONTAL SUPPORT WIRE ROPE. POSITION THE TOPSUPPORT ROPE AT LEAST 5 FEET (1.5 M) ABOVE THE TOP OF THE CUT SLOPE. USE TOP HORIZONTALSUPPORT ROPES THAT ARE NO LONGER THAN 100 FEET (30.5 M) EACH. INTERIOR HORIZONTALSUPPORT ROPES ARE NOT REQUIRED.

8. CONNECT WIRE ROPES (TAG LINES) TO THE END OF THE ANCHORS AND SECURE THE ENDS OF THEWIRE ROPE WITH WIRE ROPE CLIPS. INSTALL THE WIRE ROPE CLIPS ACCORDING TO THEMANUFACTURER’S RECOMMENDATIONS.

SPECIAL INSPECTIONS:

1. IN ADDITION TO INSPECTION PROCEDURES SPECIFIED BY THE INTERNATIONAL BUILDINGCODE SECTION 1709 THIS PROJECT IS SUBJECT TO SPECIAL INSPECTION REQUIREMENTS INACCORDANCE WITH THE FOLLOWING TABLES:

2. CONTRACTOR SHALL NOTIFY JPB ENGINEERING A MINIMUM OF 24 HOURS PRIOR TOINSTALLATION OF MATERIAL AND/OR PERFORMANCE OF WORK IN AREAS SUBJECT TOSPECIAL INSPECTION.

MATTING INSTALLED IN FIRE PRONE AREAS SHALL BE TREATED WITH ASUITABLE FIRE RETARDANT PRIOR TO REVEGETATION AS PER THE MANUFACTURER'S INSTRUCTIONS.

B. HYRDOSEEDING: HYDROSEEDING MIX DESIGN TO BE PREPARED BY DEALER AND SHALL CONFORMTO THE HAWAII STATE DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE CODE.

C. SEED MIXES: ALL SEED SHALL BE IN CONFORMANCE WITH THE HAWAII STATE DEPARTMENT OFAGRICULTURE. EACH SEED BAG SHALL BE DELIVERED TO THE SITE SEALED AND CLEARLY MARKEDAS TO SPECIES, PURITY, PERCENT GERMINATION, DEALER'S GUARANTEE, AND DATES OF TEST. PRIORTO SEEDING, THE CONTRACTOR SHALL PROVIDE A LETTER OF CERTIFICATION AND THE ORIGINALASSOCIATION OF OFFICIAL SEED ANALYSTS (AOSA) SEED TEST RESULTS.

D. MULCH: MUCH SHALL BE OF CELLULOSE OR WOOD FIBER PRODUCTS WITH NO GROWTH ORGERMINATION INHIBITING SUBSTANCES, AND SHALL BE MANUFACTURED IN SUCH A MANNER THATWHEN THOROUGHLY MIXED WITH SEED, FERTILIZER, ORGANIC STABILIZER, AND WATER, IN THEPROPORTIONS SPECIFIED, WILL FORM A HOMOGENEOUS SLURRY WHICH IS CAPABLE OF BEINGSPRAYED TO FORM A POROUS MAT. THE FIBROUS MUCH IN ITS AIR-DRY STATE SHALL CONTAIN NOMORE THAN 15% BY WEIGHT OF WATER. THE FIBER SHALL HAVE A TEMPORARY GREEN DYE ANDSHALL BE ACCOMPANIED BY A CERTIFICATE OF COMPLIANCE STATING THAT THE FIBER CONFORMTO THE SPECIFICATIONS.

E. ORGANIC STABILIZER/TACKIFIER: SHALL BE AN ORGANIC SUBSTANCE SUPPLIED IN POWDER FORMAND SHALL BE PSILIUM-BASED AND PACKED IN CLEARLY MARKED BAGS STATING THE CONTENTSOF EACH PACKAGE.

F. FERTILIZER: SHALL BE A STARTER DERIVED FROM UREA FORMALDEHYDE (N-P-K 6-24-24) ANDCONFORM TO THE REQUIREMENTS OF THE HAWAII STATE DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE CODE.

2. SITE PREPARATION

A. WEED CONTROL: BEFORE INSTALLATION OF MATTING COMMENCES, THE AREA TO BE MATTEDSHALL BE ERADICATED OF WEEDS AND ANY EXISTING VEGETATIVE GROWTH (EXCLUDING NATIVEVEGETATION) SHALL BE SLASHED TO A HEIGHT OF 2 INCHES UNLESS SPECIFIED OTHERWISE IN THECONTRACT SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS. TRASH BUILD UP AND CUT MATERIAL SHALL BE REMOVEDFROM THE AREA PRIOR TO SPRAYING WITH A NON SELECTIVE HERBICIDE (GLYPHOSATE)INCORPORATING A HERBICIDE MARKER. WEEDS SHALL BE SPRAYED A MINIMUM TEN DAYS PRIORTO INSTALLATION OF MATTING. ALL INVASIVE WEEDS SUCH AS KIKUYU, COUCH GRASS, ONIONWEED AND NUT GRASS SHALL BE ERADICATED PRIOR TO MATTING. GLYPHOSATE (BIACTIVEFORMULATION) SHALL BE USED AROUND WETLANDS DRAINAGE LINES AND WATERWAYS. THEHERBICIDE SHALL BE USED ACCORDING TO THE MANUFACTURER'S RECOMMENDED RATES ANDANY OFF TARGET DAMAGE SHALL BE RECTIFIED BY THE CONTRACTOR.

B. EARTHWORKS: THE CONTRACTOR SHALL TRIM AND GRADE ALL WORKED SUBGRADE AREAS ASREQUIRED PRIOR TO PLACING TOPSOIL TO PROVIDE A SMOOTH, CONSOLIDATED, EVEN, FREEDRAINING SURFACE, FREE FROM DEPRESSIONS AND UNDULATIONS TO FINAL DESIGN LEVELSUNLESS SPECIFIED OTHERWISE IN THE CONTRACT SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS. WHERE RILL AND SHEETEROSION HAS OCCURRED THE CONTRACTOR SHALL REPAIR AND REINSTATE WITH SUITABLE STABLEMATERIAL. STONES AND CLAY CLUMPS LARGER THAN 2 INCH DIAMETER ARE TO BE REMOVED TOALLOW SMOOTH AND UNINTERRUPTED SURFACE CONTACT WITH THE MATTING. NOTE THATEXPOSED DISPERSIBLE CLAYS REQUIRE TOPSOILING PRIOR TO MATTING.

3. EXECUTION

A. THE CONTRACTOR SHALL INSTALL MATTING BY ROLLING THE MAT DOWN THE SLOPE WITH AMINIMUM 6 INCH OVERLAP BETWEEN STRIPS UNLESS SPECIFIED OTHERWISE IN THE CONTRACTSPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS. ROLLS SHOULD BE TILED SO THAT OVERLAP IS IN THE DIRECTION OF EITHERPLACEMENT OF COVER MATERIAL OR PREVAILING WIND. THE MATTING SHALL LAY LOOSELY ONTHE SOIL SURFACE TO ACHIEVE MAXIMUM SOIL CONTACT.

B. WHERE MATTING IS LAID OVER LOW VELOCITY DRAINAGE CHANNELS, IT SHALL BE OVERLAPPED INTHE DIRECTION OF WATER FLOW. MATTING OF HIGH VELOCITY CHANNELS AND DRAINS WILL BELAID IN THE DIRECTION OF THE DRAINAGE CHANNEL AND OVERLAPPED A MINIMUM OF 6 INCHESBETWEEN STRIPS.

C. MATTING SHALL BE FIXED TO THE BASE OF TRENCHES BY PINNING AND BACKFILLING WITHEXCAVATED MATERIAL (NOT CONTAINING LARGE ROCKS < 2 INCHES) AND COMPACTED TOORIGINAL LEVELS. PINS SHALL BE SPACED AT 80 INCH INTERVALS PRIOR TO BACKFILLING.

TOP OF BATTER: THE MINIMUM TRENCHING DEPTH SHALL BE 20 INCHES BEYOND TOP AND 8 INCHDEPTH.

BOTTOM OF BATTER: THE MINIMUM TRENCHING DEPTH SHALL BE 16 INCHES BEYOND TOE AND 8INCH DEPTH.

SIDE OF BATTER: THE MINIMUM TRENCHING DEPTH SHALL BE 8 INCHES BEYOND AND 8 INCH DEPTH.

PINNING: MINIMUM PINNING REQUIREMENT TO BE 8 INCHES X 1 12 INCHES X 8 INCHES (LEG XBRIDGE X LEG) NON GALVANIZED PINS, 18 INCH WIRE DIAMETER SPACED PER MANUFACTURERECOMMENDATION.

INSTALLATION TO CONFORM TO MANUFACTURES INSTRUCTIONS AND SHOULD BE SITE SPECIFICACCORDING TO SOIL TYPE.

D. HYDROSEEDING SLURRY PREPARATION SHALL BE DONE AT THE JOB SITE. WATER, MUCH, FERTILIZER,BINDER AND OTHER INGREDIENTS SHALL BE ADDED TO THE TANK SIMULTANEOUSLY SO THAT THEFINISHED LOAD IS A HOMOGENOUS MIX OF THE SPECIFIED INGREDIENTS. SEED SHALL BE ADDEDLAS AND SHALL BE DISCHARGED WITHIN 2 HOURS. LOADS HELD OVER 2 HOURS WILL BERECHARGED WITH 12 THE SEED RATE BEFORE APPLICATION. ONCE FULLY LOADED, THE COMPLETESLURRY SHALL BE AGITATED FOR 3-5 MINUTES TO ALLOW FOR UNIFORM MIXING.

E. ALL HYDROSEED APPLICATIONS ARE TO BE APPLIED IN A SWEEPING MOTION TO FORM A UNIFORMAPPLICATION AND FORM A MAT AT THE SPECIFIED RATES.

F. IF HYDROSEED MIXTURE REMAINS IN TANK FOR MORE THAN 8 HOURS IT SHALL BE REMOVED FROMTHE JOB SITE AT CONTRACTOR'S EXPENSE.

4. ALL EROSION CONTROL MAT AREAS AND STAGING AREAS SHALL BE MAINTAINED IN A NEAT ANDORDERLY CONDITION. KEEP PAVED AREAS FREE OF SOIL.
