WHAT’S HAPPENING AT SLOMŠEK SLOVENIAN SCHOOL? The students and teachers of the Slomšek Slovenian School have been very busy during the first semester of the 2013-2014 school year. Besides the classes they attend each week, they have been very active with many projects and performances. Hopefully, they are enjoying their winter break before classes resume on Saturday, January 18th, 2014 at 10:00 am. We would like to encourage you to participate in Slovenian School! We offer many different teaching methodologies for second languages that are similar to what your students experience in school today – with the added advantage of making new Slovenian friends! Our educational materials consist of workbooks, books, CD’s, etc. directly from Slovenia. We supplement the classroom experience using laptops with microphones and language software that allow students to repeat vocabulary and lessons and give them the ability to playback their own voice. All of the classes have been working on new language skills using various learning methods from the formal courses used by the adults and young adults to the games that are played in the Srčki class. The intermediate students have been learning more vocabulary in order to build formal sentences and phrases, while many of the younger students are learning their numbers and colors. This semester was filled with many projects and performances. The students and teachers put together a wonderful performance for Sv. Miklavž that included recitations, plays, singing and dancing. All of the school’s dance groups performed for the Slovenian Catholic Center’s annual anniversary celebration. In addition to these annual events, the school also performed at the Museum of Science and Industry’s annual Christmas Around the World exhibition. The students danced and demonstrated many of the traditions of the Slovenian culture for those attending the per-formance. Our semester ended with a project which taught our students about the advent calendar with each stu-dent creating one of their own to take home and count down the days to the holiday season. For more information about upcoming events and performances taking place at the Slomšek Slovenian School, please visit our website at www.slovenianschool.info. Come join us for some winter games and other fun after classes are complete on January 25th! The school is fortunate to have many quality teachers that volunteer their time and skills. Because of their dedica-tion, we are able to have a successful school program. Please join us in thanking our current teachers and welcom-ing our new teachers when you see them at the Dom. The Slomšek Slovenian School would like to extend a special thank you to everyone who helped encourage our stu-dents with their donations to the school. The school is able to provide an updated learning experience for all of its students because of the support and generosity of members from the Slovenian community. If you are interested in teaching at the school, please contact us either via email at [email protected] or leave a message at the Center, 630-243-0670. You are always welcome to stop by and visit us on Saturdays from 10:00 am until 1:00 pm. Don’t forget to find us at some of the events throughout the year, including the Mother’s Day program! More details will be provided in the next newsletter.

Thank you….Hvala lepa! Thank you to all of the volunteers that help keep our community and our Dom up and running. Special thanks goes out to Fanika Fritz, Martin & Luba Novak, Kathy Majcen, Slavko & Slavica Sovan, Stane Anzeljc, Velko & Jozica Zudic, Joe Josza, Gusti & Mena Densa, Karl & Maria Zorjan, all of our groundskeepers, lawn mowers, snow plowers, kitchen staff, dishwashers, servers and bartenders! You are cordially invited to participate in the 7th Annual

Homemade Slovenian Wine Competition which will be held the afternoon of Sunday, February 9th - KOLINE

It’s that time of year again where we can enjoy the fruits of our Slovenian wine maker’s labor; where we can sample the delicious varietal wines in both reds and whites. The wine makers made their wines in the Fall of 2013 using their own techniques for the most perfect flavors, clarities, and aromas. Who will produce the best white and best red for 2013? To celebrate our 7th annual competition, I invite all of our wine makers to enter their wines of 2013.

For more detailed information about the competition, or if you know of someone that would be interested in participating this year, invite them to submit their wine and to contact Dana Blase. Messages can be left at the Center 630-243-0670 or email to [email protected]. Everyone is invited to enjoy a delicious meal at the Slovenian Catholic Center’s Koline Dinner on Sunday, February 9th following mass. The wine judging will begin after the luncheon.

I invite all of our Slovenian wine makers to participate in the challenge to see who has the BEST WHITE WINE and who has the BEST RED WINE for 2013!!

We have decided to make a few changes to the newsletter. We will be adding a new section for trivia, puzzles, games, jokes and recipes. If you have some information that you would like to add to upcoming newsletters; please let us know. In the meantime, take the word search chal-lenge on the next page and see how well you can find the castles! If you’d like to see the an-swers; please find Tina Hozjan at the Center on a Sunday afternoon to see how well you did!
