BIS 401 applied interdisciplinary studies deadline – Spring 2013

BIS 401 (Interdisciplinary Studies Core Course) BIS 401 offers a remarkable opportunity to apply your interdisciplinary skills and knowledge in an applied setting, to more thoroughly integrate your concentration areas, and to more broadly integrate your theoretical and practical education. This course is designed to guide you through interdisciplinary analyses of your applied site, the site functioning as a case study, or experiential lab. Most of your time will be spent at the applied site, and that experience will be made more meaningful and valuable as you complete a series of analytical and integrative assignments that are submitted online. Prerequisites: C or better in BIS 301 and BIS 302; 2.0 GPA; approved BIS 401 application. Application Due date for Spring C 2013 (Jan. 7 – April 30) Thursday, Nov. 15, 2012 before 4 p.m. AZ time

In today’s world of email, Twitter, text messaging, and slang, following the conventions of grammar and usage can often be a difficult task. Some of the common issues include things like subject-verb agreement, composing complete sentences, avoiding run-on and comma-spliced sentences, and pronoun agreement. This workshop will provide a refresher on some of the grammar specifics that you may have forgotten, in order to help you present your work in a manner that reflects its quality. Participants will have an opportunity to submit specific topics they would like to discuss. Plan to attend? While writing sentences seems simple enough, there are techniques to ensure the intended message is delivered so that the points flow together and the piece is easier to read and understand. This workshop will explore how you can stay on message with concise sentences, create rhythm with parallelism, and make connections using coordination and subordination, to not only write clear and effective sentences, but a clear and effective paper. Veterans Day weekend traditional Pow-Wow

The Fletcher Library Lawn at Arizona State University’s West campus will come alive with the sights and sounds of Native drummers and dancers on Saturday, Nov. 10. The event, from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. at 4701 W. Thunderbird Road in Phoenix, is free and open to the public. In addition to dance and drum performances, the Pow-Wow will feature grand entries at 1 p.m. and 7 p.m., Native arts and crafts, and food booths offering fry bread and more.

The day’s schedule is: 11 a.m. – Gourd dancing 1 p.m. – Grand entry 5 p.m. – Dinner break 6 p.m. – Gourd dancing 7 p.m. – Grand entry 7:30 p.m. – Recognition of veterans 10 p.m. – Closing Attendees are encouraged to bring their own lawn chairs. (Limited seating will be provided for tribal elders.) The Pow-Wow is sponsored by the Native American Events Committee, Native American Student Organization, and the Office of Public Affairs at ASU’s West campus. Mark Bowland Leadership Fund (academic scholarship)

The Mark Bowland Leadership Fund has been established to honor the life of Mark Bowland, a graduate of the Arizona State University College of Nursing and Health Innovation, Class of 1996. This award recognizes the contributions of undergraduate student leaders and the indelible impact that their efforts have on the present and future by awarding a half tuition waiver for the 2013-14 academic year. Multiple recipients may be considered. Criteria: Minimum GPA: 3.00 Need-based: Yes (requires filing a FAFSA) Enrollment status: Full-time Academic level: Incoming Freshman to Seniors

Additional criteria: LGBTQA Services will organize a committee of professionals in the field of higher education to initially screen applicants. The selection of the recipient will be based on demonstration of leadership (community service, advocacy, leadership positions held and accomplishments), financial need and academic merit (3.0 grade-point average). A list of finalists will be forwarded to donors for interviews and recommendation of recipients. Students will be evaluated on the thoroughness of their application, essay, letters of recommendation and academic transcript. The Scholarship deadline is Monday, February 4, 2013. Capital Scholars Washington, DC summer internship program

Attention all interested students!!! The Capital Scholars Program is now accepting applications for Summer 2013. This nine week summer internship program from May 26 through July 28 provides the opportunity for students to earn 6 upper division political science or other major credits for interning in Washington DC. Applicants do not need to be political science majors; students of all majors are encouraged to apply as diversity only makes the group stronger. Students must have completed 45 hours of coursework at ASU (transfer students should contact Dr. Herrera for exceptions). In addition, a minimum GPA of 2.5 GPA overall and 3.0 in the student’s major is required. This is a fantastic opportunity to get invaluable, hands-on experience in the workplace. Other benefits include: strong letters of recommendation from internship supervisors, great résumé building experience, and potential job offers.
