ASSUMPTIONS1. You have at least one server running a

Windows network operating system

2. You're either interested in or participate in the ongoing safeguarding and protection of your organization’s data

Page 3: Small Business Backup & Disaster Recovery

TWO GOALS FOR TODAY

To educate the attendees on technology and industry trends that are allowing us to take advantage of robust backup and business

continuity options that were formerly out of reach for most organizations

To inform you that you have a choice over traditional tape that offers rapid recovery time and continuance of operations during a failure

WE WOULD LOVE FOR YOU TO STOP RELYING EXCLUSIVELY ON TAPE FOR YOUR BACKUP

NEEDS

IMPORTANCE OF PROTECTING OUR DIGITAL ASSETS

A recent study discovered that, of companies experiencing a “major loss” of computer records, 43 percent never reopened, 51 percent closed within two years of the loss, and a mere 6 percent survived over the long-term•

IMPORTANCE OF PROTECTING OUR DIGITAL ASSETS

“Numerous surveys reveal that second to mis-configuration of the backup software, the leading cause of backup failure is human error”

“As a monotonous, thankless job, the shuttling of tapes in and out of a backup tape drive is frequently delegated to employees without the benefit of professional training, who perform the task as their lowest priority on the way out the door”

WHAT IS BUSINESS CONTINUITY?

WHAT IS DISASTER RECOVERY?

• Business Continuity encompasses Disaster Recovery, Backups and even business succession planning. It provides the strategy and process involved to make sure your company survives the loss of key individuals, data, equipment, or facilities. How do we continue operations if <X> happens?

• Disaster Recovery typically refers how companies respond or recover from actual disasters, like a flood, fire, earthquake, theft, etc.

STRATEGIC

TACTICAL

INFORMATION TECHNOLOGYTWO COMPONENTS OF BACKUP & DISASTER RECOVERY

1. SAFEGUARD THE ACTUAL DATA2. PROVIDE FOR CONTINUITY OF IT

SERVICES

Page 9: Small Business Backup & Disaster Recovery

SAFEGUARD THE DATA

• BACK IT UP! (make copies of the data) • Most common backup destinations:

– Tape– External hard disks– Network Attached Storage– Offsite services that backup over Internet to a

remote datacenter

Page 10: Small Business Backup & Disaster Recovery

PROVIDE FOR CONTINUITY

• Allow for continuance of IT services:– during failure– during recovery process

• Allow email to continue to flow• Allow access to documents• Allow access to software• Allow BUSINESS and IT to CONTINUE

THE OVERWHELMING MAJORITY OF PEOPLE

ARE BACKING UP (COPYING DATA) BUT NOT PROVIDING FOR

CONTINUITY

Page 11: Small Business Backup & Disaster Recovery

HOW DO I PROVIDE CONTINUITY?

UP UNTIL RECENTLY…

•NOT VERY EASILY!•NOT COST-EFFECTIVELY

•CLUSTERING?•SPARE SERVERS?•EXPENSIVE AND COMPLEX DATA REPLICATION

Page 12: Small Business Backup & Disaster Recovery

WHAT IS OUR TOLERANCE FOR DOWNTIME

Most people claim that they can be “down” anywhere from 2 hours to 2 days

REALITY“after a moderate to major failure, most people with tape backup, or, data, copied to tape, are looking at anywhere from two days to two weeks, depending on parts availability or delivery”

Page 13: Small Business Backup & Disaster Recovery

ADVANCES IN TECHNOLOGY AND OTHER TRENDS MAKE BUSINESS

CONTINUITY POSSIBLE AND AFFORDABLE

ENTER DISK-BASED BACKUPENTER VIRTUALIZATION

Page 14: Small Business Backup & Disaster Recovery

WHAT IS DISK BASED BACKUP?

Utilize fast, inexpensive hard drives, rather than tape for your backup operations

Page 15: Small Business Backup & Disaster Recovery

DISK BASED BACKUP?(IN LIEU OF TAPE)

WHY NOW?WHY DIDN’T WE USE DISK EARLIER?

SUMMARY1. Organizations need to look beyond just copying data to tape

2. The simple copying of data to tape is not a strategy. Rather, when it works flawlessly, it merely safeguards your data and is one piece of a two-part process

3. Providing Business Continuity, or the ability to keep working in the face of a failure is critical

4. Most companies have a very false sense of security in tape or a distorted view of the recovery process and actual time needed to fully recover from a failure or disaster

5. Industry pricing trends and technological advances have allowed for smaller organizations and those with a tighter IT budgets to move from tape alone, to robust disaster recovery which provides for business continuity

6. Make no mistake about it, using tape alone leaves you and your organization vulnerable to considerable downtime

TAPE VS. DISK

TAPE ADVANTAGES

DISK ADVANTAGES

PORTABILITY Tapes are compact and lightweight.

RELIABILITY Hard disk is significantly more reliable than tape

RANDOM ACCESS No winding or seeking. Much faster backup and restore times. Disk access times are

typically 10 milliseconds. It can take several minutes to seek the correct place

on a tape

LIFE SPAN Each tape is specified to have only a limited number of read/write cycles. Hard disks

have virtually no limitation

PRICE Disk prices have plummeted. All things considered, disk is cheaper

SPEED The raw speed advantage of hard disk is superior to tape

REWRITABILITY Instant ability to write over data, whereas tapes can require erase cycles and re-

tensioning

COMPONENTS OF AN IRONCLAD BACKUP AND DISASTER RECOVERY PLAN

•FREQUENT BACKUPS (MORE THAN EVERY 24 HOURS)

•HEALTH AND INTEGRITY OF BACKUPS MONITORED

•BLOCK LEVEL BACKUP, VERSUS FILE LEVEL BACKUP

•BACKUP IS ENCRYPTED FOR SECURITY REASONS

•FAILOVER AND BARE METAL RESTORE CAPABILITIES

•OFFSITE STORAGE CAPABILITY

Page 23: Small Business Backup & Disaster Recovery

THE ANSWERPREVENT™ | Managed Backup & Disaster

Recovery

•Frequent backups (as frequent as every 15 minutes)

•Failover capability through virtualization of servers

•Backups are monitored 24 hours per day, 7 days per week

•Security (256 AES encryption on and off-site)

•Bare Metal Restores to dissimilar hardware

•Optional backup of your backup to an offsite datacenter
