Mobilebroadbandusageisexploding,fueledbychangingcommunicationspatternsandtheintroductionofnewwirelessdevices,suchassmartphones,thataremakinganytime,anywheremultimediacommunicationsanintegralpartofeverydaylife.Althoughoperatorsareplanningtosignificantlyboostthecapacityoftheirnetworkstoaccommodatethissurgeintraffic,therealityisthattraditionalnetworkarchitectureswillstillbeunabletohandletheextraloadefficientlyoreconomically.

Evenwithadditionalcellsites,lowdatathroughputwillstillbeanissueasmoreandmoredatauserscompeteforthesamespectrum.Additionally,weaksignalstrengthattheperipheryofacell’scoverageareawillcontinuetolimitthequalityofserviceattheselocations.

Byextendingthereachofmobilenetworks,Alcatel-Lucent’sSmallCellsolutionprovidesamoreefficient,cost-effectiveoptionforgrowth.Notonlydosmallcellsgreatlyincreasenetworkcapacity,butmoreimportantly,theyprovidededicatedcapacitytoresidents,enterprises,andmetrohotspots,wheremostdatausageoccurs.
