SMALL GROUP DISCUSSION FOR 03/08BIG PICTURE:What you think about is what you care about, and whatyou care about, you chase. In this series, we’re talkingabout what it looks like to cultivate our relationship withJesus, growing closer to Him in our thoughts, ouraffections, and in spiritual disciplines; our head, ourheart, and our hands. How does one aheart, and our hands. How does one affect the otherand then the next?

• Who was at worship on Wednesday and can tell usquickly what Ty talked about? (hint: sermon notes areon Instagram @fusemsm on the ‘sermons’ highlight)TEXT WAS: Multiple Scriptures• What you think about is what you care about, and what you care about, you chase.• Our hearts tell us what we desire & what we feel• Our hearts tell us what we desire & what we feel• They STINK at telling us what we SHOULD desire/feel• We don’t follow our heart-we inform it

1.

• Have students turn to Psalm 51 (p. 313) but don’t read it yet. While they’re turning there, pick a story from your life and tellit to the students about a time where you followed your heartor your feelings and it turned out worse than you thought itwas going to (examples could be a bad date/relationship,ways you maybe treated your friends in middle school, orsomething else where your “wisdom” was proven wrong).something else where your “wisdom” was proven wrong).

2.

***BEFORE CLASS: Read 2nd Samuel 11 to familiarizeyourself with the story of David & Bathsheba. Re-tell it to thegroup as background for Psalm 51 BEFORE you read itwith them. Make sure to hit these points of the story:

• David saw Bathsheba & LIKED her (feelings-heart)• He listened to his heart & took her (followed his heart)• But she was Uriah• But she was Uriah’s wife, & his heart ignored that (proves that our hearts are dumb)• CONSEQUENCES: Uriah murdered, Bathsheba taken, & the new baby died

MAJOR POINT: This all shows that just listening to our heartsgets us in massive trouble, both with ourselves & others.

3.

NOW read Psalm 51:1-10.ASK:• What did David just do here? - Acknowledged his sin - Asked God for: mercy, help, forgiveness, etc. - Asked God for a new heart (v. 10)Other answers are possibile but we’re zoning in on Other answers are possibile but we’re zoning in on v. 10.

4.

• Let’s look closer at verse 10. What does David askGod to do? (create a clean heart in him)• So if David asked for a clean heart, what did he think was the biggest thing that was wrong? (his heart-he knew it was broken from the inside)

4.

• What happened when David just followed his heart?(lots of people got hurt, some even died)• What does that look like today? When we follow our hearts, how might we get hurt/hurt others?(many possible answers)

5.

• If our hearts only tell us lies, how can we train them to know the truth?(by filling our minds with God’s Word!)(What you think about is what you care about, & whatyou care about, you chase.)

6.

• We’re going to finish today by practicing what it looks like to fill our minds with the things of God, & asking Him to create clean hearts in us.(everyone should have a scripture/prayer card withverses on 1 side and prayer promps on the other. Spreadeveryone out individually around the room and have themmeditate on the scripture and pray for 10 minutes.meditate on the scripture and pray for 10 minutes. Therewill be music ready to go for them to have instrumentalworship so that it’s not awkwardly quiet. MAKE SUREYOU HAVE THIS TEN MINUTES AT THE END ORTHIS WHOLE LESSON IS MISSED; we’ll make sureyou’re in your rooms in time to make it happen).
