Small Group Questions April 1, 2018 Easter Sunday Message: “Unbelievable” Introduction What happened on Easter some 2,000 years ago changes everything when it comes to faith. The foundation for a personal relationship with Jesus is one, unique event – the resurrection of Jesus from the dead. For some now, like then, it’s just too hard to believe – it’s unbelievable. For others, it’s the hope of everything else found in Jesus and following Him – it’s unbelievable! The resurrection is the dividing line of faith, meaning it takes Jesus out of the realm of being a “good teacher” or an “example to follow.” The resurrection puts Jesus into a category all by Himself. While there have been many religious leaders, only One has risen from the dead. Beyond that event, what Jesus did by rising from the dead has personal implications for us all. It challenges us to know that God has accomplished something we never could and to know it was done for us. It challenges us to live our lives in response to God’s power and God’s goodness. Easter is the defining moment of faith. (Questions to get everyone to participate) 1. Can you think of a time when something was claimed and you thought/said, “that’s unbelievable” – meaning you just found it too hard to believe? (UFO, get rich quick idea, etc.) Can you think of a time when you expressed with great enthusiasm, “that’s unbelievable!” (i.e. birth of a child, sports team comeback, etc.) 2. What are the most common objections to faith in the Jesus of the Bible in our day that you hear? (Questions based on the primary text) Read John 20:10-23. 3. Why does Mary go to Jesus’ tomb on that Sunday morning? What does Mary assume has happened to Jesus’ body when she first discovers the empty tomb? What does that tell you about her expectations of what she would find versus what she did find instead? 4. Does it seem natural or strange that Mary would not recognize Jesus at this moment? Why? 5. Why would the disciples be locked in a room in fear? What emotion is recorded when Jesus appears? Does the quick change from fear to joy make sense? Why or why not? 6. Why do you think Jesus repeats the phrase, “Peace be with you?” What do you think Jesus means when He says He’s sending them? 7. Complete this phrase using only one sentence: “Jesus’ resurrection to me means…”
