Today, we’re talking about strength. Be sure to stress that strength doesn’t necessarily mean muscles. It can refer to a lot of different things, one of which is the ability to take a stand and follow God, even when it’s hard.

Here’s this week’s big idea: God gives us the strength we need.

TODAY’S BIG IDEA: God gives us the strength we need.

Supplies: None

Video: Trolls / Get Back Up Again (https://youtu.be/IFuFm0m2wj0) God’s Story / Daniel (https://youtu.be/GY0pARvYcyw)

Time: 15 minutes

*Start large group 10 minutes into the service.

WHAT IS REAL STRENGTH?● Say: Welcome to Kids’ Club! Today we’re talking about

STRENGTH, and how it comes in all kinds of forms. ● Ask: What’s the first thing you think of when you hear

“strength”? (Let kids respond) Yeah, probably being physically strong or having big muscles. Let’s check out a video and see a character who shows a lot of strength, but not just the outer, physical kind.

● Video: Trolls / Get Back Up Again (3 minutes)● Say: So how did she show strength? (Let kids respond.)

Yep, she kept getting back up and going forward, even when tough things were happening. And today going to learn about a guy named Daniel, who showed incredible strength in a tough situation. And that leads to our big idea: God gives us the strength we need.

DANIEL● Say: To start Daniel’s story, here are three important facts:

○ Daniel was living in the palace of a man named King Nebuchadnezzar. Let’s call him King Nezzer.

○ At the time, King Nezzer was in control of God’s family, and he forced all the smartest and most handsome men to come and work for him. So Daniel and his friends went to work in his palace.

○ Daniel and his friends followed the one true God, but King Nezzer did NOT.

● Say: While Daniel and his friends were serving the king, they were faced with some really hard choices that required them to show true strength. Let’s watch a video about his life, and see WHERE he gets his strength from.

● Video: God’s Story / Daniel (4 minutes)● Ask: Who can share some ways that Daniel showed

strength and bravery? (Let kids respond.) Yep, Daniel was willing to be strong, take a stand and be different. Daniel said “no” to something that sounded really good to him. But he did it because he was following God. And the only way he was ABLE to do it, was because God gave him the strength he needed.

● Say: We’re going to play a game now and have some fun showing our strength, so stand up and get ready!

Part 1 (Large Group)

Main Goal: Play a game to help kids understand today’s big idea.

Supplies: ● A set of strength

challenge cards

Video: 10-minute countdown timer

Time: 10 minutes

*Start the 10-minute timer for this activity.

SHOW YOUR STRENGTH!● Say: In this game, we’ll all be trying to complete the most

strength challenges for our team!● Set up:

○ Split kids into two teams○ Move one half of the room to one side; move the

other half to the other side. Make sure there are an equal number of adult volunteers on each side.

○ Create an aisle of space in the middle and walk down the aisle, scattering the deck of “strength” challenge cards.

○ Give the leader of each team a bin● Goal of the game:

○ Tell kids that you’re dropping cards on the floor with different strength challenges on them.

○ When you count to three, everybody should run to pick up a card and do whatever that card says.

○ You might have to find somebody to help you because some of them require another person. And if you can’t complete your own card, don’t worry! Help a teammate complete his/hers—either way, it’s a point for your team!

○ Once you’ve completed the task on the card, head to your leader who is holding a bin and put the completed card in the bucket. Then pick up a new one from the ground.

○ The team with the most cards at the end of five minutes, wins!

● After the first round, collect all the cards, shuffle them up and scatter them on the floor for a second round (if time allows).

● Tips:○ Adults should walk around and make sure kids are

really completing their tasks.

*Start the 10-minute timer for the next part of the lesson.

Part 2 (Game Time)

Time: 10 minutes

*Start the 10-minute timer for this activity.

ICEBREAKER QUESTION● Go around your group and have each kid say their name

and answer this question: What’s your favorite physical activity to do? (This could be a game, something you do in gym class, an exercise, etc.)

DEBRIEF THE GAME● Ask:

○ What were your favorite strength challenges? ○ Were you able to complete all the ones you picked?○ How is physical strength different from the strength

Daniel showed?● Do:

○ Have kids pair up and tell each other one way they’ve had to be strong in their own life–but not physically strong. More like the strength Daniel showed by standing up for what’s right!

Part 3 (Cool Down Time)

Page 5: Small Groups Book of Daniel God gives us the strength we ... · ability to take a stand and follow God, even when it’s hard. Here’s this week’s big idea: God gives ... Daniel

Main Goal: Give kids a chance to respond to what they’ve heard today, and worship!

Supplies:

Video: Music Video: Let Me (youtube.com/watch?v=Rh1gNbDO9lM&list=RDiBHPJxKzb5Y&index=5) Music Video: Good Good Father (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eE_l-Klp2Uk)

Time: 15 minutes

Tip: One music video has motions, and the other has only lyrics. Depending on the age and dynamic of your group, one may work better than the other. Try them out and see!

*Play the 10-second countdown video to help kids refocus as they get back into a large group.

GOD GIVES US STRENGTH● Say: Following God wasn’t just hard for Daniel, back in the

days when you could get in a lot of trouble just for believing in God. It’s hard for us too.

● Say: Sometimes it means doing something different than everybody else, saying “no” to something that looks or feels good to us, or standing up for what’s right even when everybody else is doing something different.

● Ask: One way that I’ve had to rely on God to give me strength is…(Share a personal example with kids that will help them understand what it means to get strength from God in a hard situation.)

● Say: Whether it’s Daniel, or an adult like me and your leaders, or YOU…..can any of us be strong on our own? (Let kids respond.) No way!

● Say: This month, we’re learning a verse from the book of Deuteronomy, written by Moses (has anyone heard of him?) Moses was a guy who went through a lot of difficult things, and he had to rely on God to give him strength all the time. (Have someone read for the group.)

● Slide: Deuteronomy 31:8 The Lord himself will go ahead of you. He will be with you. He will never leave you. He’ll never desert you. So don’t be afraid. Don’t lose hope.

RESPOND AND WORSHIP● Say: The most incredible way that God showed us he

loves us and will always be with us–he sent his son Jesus to die for us, and rescue us from all our wrong choices! And when you believe that and follow Jesus, you get to experience incredible strength from him.

● Pray: Ask somebody to come and thank God for helping us follow him, even when it’s hard.

● Say: Another way to get strength from God is through WORSHIPPING him! So let’s lift His name up and focus only on him as we sing these words.

● Music Video: Let Me (lyrics, no motions)● Music Video (Optional): Good Good Father (motions)

Part 4 (Large Group)

Page 6: Small Groups Book of Daniel God gives us the strength we ... · ability to take a stand and follow God, even when it’s hard. Here’s this week’s big idea: God gives ... Daniel

Main Goal: Discuss today’s story and how it applies to kids’ lives through asking questions and doing a hands-on activity.

Supplies: ● Bibles (2/small group)

Time: 10 -15 minutes (or until parents pick up)

Pray together as a group. (If a volunteer wants to pray, let them go for it! You can also ask kids for specific things that they would like prayer for.)

EXTRA TIME?● Give kids maze and

word-search activity sheets to work on until their parents pick them up.

● Pick a few kids and who can hold an object out to the side the longest, or give everyone a “strength test” by seeing who can do the most push-ups or crabwalk across the room the fastest (or do a staring contest!)

RESPOND TO THE STORY● Ask and Discuss:

○ What did Daniel do that may have been hard for him? How did he show strength? Why was it hard?

○ When do we need to be strong?○ We know that we’ll all face tough situations when

we need to be strong, but HOW can we get that strength from? HOW can we actually rely on him? (Pray/talk to him, read the Bible, spend time with others who follow God, worship him)

○ Does anyone know what the Holy Spirit is? How can we get strength from it? (If kids don’t understand yet the Holy Spirit is, explain that God sent the Holy Spirit to be with us at all times, to help us when we need strength from God.)

○ What’s a specific way God might be asking you to show strength?

MAKE IT PERSONAL● Tell kids to take off their shoes and hold each of them in a

hand, with their arms straight out from their bodies. ● Challenge the kids to hold their arms this way for one

minute. At the end of a minute, see how many kids still have their arms out!

● Ask: Was that easier or harder than you thought it would be? What would make it easier (aside from setting the objects down)? How does this apply when things overwhelm us in real life?

● Have students form pairs, and have one partner hold their arms out again, holding the shoes. This time, ask the other partner to help by holding up their partner’s arms under the biceps. How much longer can they last now?

● Say: We may not have the strength to do things on our own, but with God’s strength we can do anything. And sometimes God’s way of giving strength to us is through giving friends to support us!

● Extra challenge: Each kid will be different, but you may find that they want an extra challenge beyond markers boxes! Have them take turns holding up the Bibles instead, or find different things in the room to hold up (like marker boxes, etc)!
