elcome to a distinctly fresh andyounger approach to luxuryhospitality, where the mood and decor

of contemporised hotels (and newly builtproperties) perfectly compliments the buzzy, cosmopolitan energy of Europe’s happeningcities. This is the “W” effect.

From the moment you enter a “W” hotel or resortworldwide the emphasis is upon strikinginnovation. You are not in a lobby or receptionbut rather a vibrant “living room” or “lounge”. Thisjourney continues through sensoryenvironments where amplified entertainmentreflects a youthful exuberance expressedthrough cutting edge design.

Guest rooms and suites have intriguingly simplecategories ranging from “Wonderful” to “Wow”whilst facilities attract equally evocative titles -“Sweat” for the Fitness Centre, “Bliss” for the Spaand “Wet” for the pool (W Barcelona, W StPetersburg). It is therefore not difficult toacquaint yourself in the language of the “W”luxury lifestyle, perhaps whilst contemplating aninnovative cocktail at “Sip” (W Istanbul).

Such is the continuing popularity of the “W”brand worldwide that there are plans to openmany more in the near future. In 2013 the WMilan and W Athens will open to join an existingEuropean city portfolio in London, Paris,Barcelona, St Petersburg and Istanbul.

ooking from the clifftops across the caldera ofSantorini offers one of the most dramatic andinspiring views in the Mediterranean. The

evening sunsets are staggering whilst in the burninglight of day the sharp contrast of the bright whiteCycladic dwellings and blue cupolas of the churcheshugging the cliffs are the quintessential images of thisnatural wonder shaped by a mighty cataclysm thatliterally blew the top off the island around 3000 BC.

Santorini has witnessed an extraordinary renaissancewith stylish renovations of the classic cave houses aswell as the creative construction of new, luxuryboutique developments. Possibly the finest project isVedema Resort, a remarkable walled community of45 spacious villas including 10 pool suites which havebeen built around a beautiful 15th century winery. Amember of The Luxury Collection, by Starwood Hotels

For a truly spectacular position then sister property,Mystique, is the place to stay. Located on the famouscliffs of the beautiful village of Oia, the resortcomprises a collection of 22 suites and villas thatcascade down the cliff face in a series of undulatingterraces. The organic construction is a true homage tothe local architecture and takes full advantage of theawe-inspiring views across the crescent caldera. Theheart of this intimate resort lies around the outdoorinfinity-edge pool, the “Aura” Bar, the “Charisma”Gourmet Restaurant and the “Secret” Wine Cave.

The quaint town of San Miguel de Allende offers a postcard perfect image of

colonial architecture dating back to the 16th century. It is a World Heritage

Site with an undulating central district of narrow cobbled streets with a low

skyline punctuated by the rising domes and belltowers of its many Baroque

churches. Its mountain location offers a temperate climate and in recent

years has seen its popularity as an artistic and culinary centre grow. Its

remote location also adds to the town’s a distinctly laid back atmosphere.

Rosewood San Miguel de Allende has the feel of a colonial residence,

although it is in fact a cleverly disguised modern building opened in early

2010 on the outskirts of this pretty colonial town. Using a palette of rich

ochres that match its historical setting, its 60 rooms are spacious with

private terraces and overlook the town. It is a modern structure that fits

in effortlessly with the colours of the town and offers of course that

unmistakeable Rosewood service and experience. Its biggest draw is the

stunning rooftop bar / terrace with amazing views over the town

including La Parroquia. Also there is a large spa and three pools. The hotel

is a short stroll along quiet cobbled streets into the heart of San Miguel.

Mayakoba, on the Yucatán Peninsula, is the extraordinary product of inspired

resort development that has created the quintessential Riviera Maya beach

destination. A team of talented biologists, architects and designers persisted in

the preservation of the flora and fauna of Mayakoba resort surrounded of sweet

water lagoons; and succeeded. Six miles of freshwater canals surrounded by

exotic mangroves and birds connect a small selection of luxury resorts and a

spectacular 18 hole Greg Norman golf course.

The tranquil Rosewood Mayakoba retreat meanders through 20 acres of

crystal clear lagoons and along a 1-mile stretch of white sand beach in the

heart of the ecological enclave of Mayakoba. The stunning contemporary

accommodation takes full advantage of the spaces offering a choice of

Mangrove forest, lagoon and beach side suites, each with private plunge

pool and rooftop sundeck. The resort sports a 17,000-square-foot spa

located on its own private island. The spa island encompasses 12 treatment

rooms, as well as eight Deluxe Spa Suites. There are extensive dining options

across the resort and families with younger children will appreciate the

excellent “Rose buds” for children programme.

Los Cabos is located at the tip of the Baja Peninsula where the Pacific meets the Sea

of Cortés and comprised primarily of two towns, San Jose del Cabo and Cabo San

Lucas, that are linked by a 20-mile corridor of rugged cliffs and fine sand coves

lined with world-class resort properties and championship golf courses. The

cooling waters of The Sea of Cortés teems with marine life and offers some of the

finest whale watching in the winter season. A consistent mild climate makes the

area a year-round choice.

Las Ventanas is a beautifully landscaped luxury resort that flows down among

cactus and elephant trees towards the pounding Pacific Ocean. The

philosophy here is 'if you want it, we will get it for you', and the service is

exemplary. Suites are extremely spacious and beautifully decorated in Mexican

style, with fabulous beds, a fireplace, dry agave trees and a telescope in every
