Smallmap offers two-way communication with your documentation. This lets users update important information while building the physical network. This increases the reliability of your documentation and saves you from doing unnecessary rework.

Smallmap maintains safety by using industry standard tools like ssl encryption and http authentication. You can restrict access to your data as needed, so that important data does not get into the wrong hands.

Smallmap is Smallworld Systems own web client. It offers our customers a simple and accessible way to view and change their network inventory data. The data can become available any place you have Internet access. Smallmap supports all modern web browsers and platforms. We made it especially with mobile devices in mind, while still making it just as powerful on larger screens.

OVERVIEWThe SWN Smallmap web client is an open source and open standards based web application. It enables quick and easy access to spatial and asset data across the entire enterprise.

Smallmap is a Smallworld client for the future. In it , we use state of the art web technologies and standards to take benefit from the changing world of open source development. Smallmaps focus is being fast and simple to use on any platform, be it a laptop, iPad or smart phone.

Smallmap offers a simple search function, access to inventory data, printing and redlining. Smallmap lets you work on your own projects and access alternatives in the database. Limited write capabilities are available. This lets users with the right access level can make changes directly in the database. That way the users outside the office can keep your network information current.

SMALLMAP CLIENTThe Smallmap client itself is based on OpenLayers, ExtJS and GeoExt. These are all open source JavaScript frameworks. The OpenLayers client displays map tiles from various sources using Web Map Service OGC standard services. In Smallmap, one or more layers will be based on Smallworld data. Other sources could be background maps from Statkart, Open Street Maps or Google Maps.

Data shown in the map window are contextualized using a vector layer. This means that a user can select and manipulate Smallworld data in the map window. Data on the selected objects are shown in a Details tab.

When selecting assets with internal structures, the internals data will be shown below the details and along side the map

The user can search for any asset of interest using the single search field. The result will be any object in Smallworld, which has an association with the search string with wildcards included. If the user searches for an address, the results would be any address objects matching the search, as well as any assets associated to those addresses, like buildings or underground utility boxes. It is up to the customer which objects should be searchable.

The client is GPS enabled. Clicking the GPS button will cause the client to follow the GPS signal of the client device, keeping the GPS location centered in the map window.

When a user has found something in the map window they wish to share, they can print the data to a file or plot the data on a plotter at the central office.

FUNCTIONS AND ARCHITECTURESmallmap can be deployed in several ways because of its dynamic architecture. The web client users see and the server back-end are separate modules. Smallmap can run on a single machine, but we consider the following components the ideal deployment.

l A Smallworld layer consisting of one or more Smallworld images running the SWN HTTP server and access the Smallworld database.

l A load balancing forward proxy to connect the Smallworld images and host all static files.

l A caching layer running Geo Web Cache on a Tomcat server. This handles the tiling and caching of spatial data to make the client fast and decrease the load on the Smallworld layer.

l The java script based web client itself, which is normally hosted by the load balancing forward proxy, and rendered in a web browser.
