SMART STORAGE Here are some basics to keep in mind: Screw cap wines can be stored upright, but wines sealed with a cork need to lie down to keep the cork from drying out. Keep your wines out of direct sunlight; they need dark and consistently cool spaces. Also, avoid areas with high humidity or vibrations, like near the furnace or fridge. Closet shelves, basements, storage areas in condos, and even garages (if they’re cool and dry) are all suitable for short-term storage. There are also temperature-controlled cabinets available in a variety of sizes – just remember they’re intended for storing wine, not chilling it to serving temperature, so you’ll still need to chill some wines before you serve.

Even if you’re not looking to cellar top-flight Bordeaux for 40+ years, you want to store your wines so that they’ll taste their best when you open them.

It’s hard to beat the Côtes du Rhône for value- priced, food-friendly, flavourful wines. This one is a classic CdR blend of Grenache and Syrah that’s made in concrete tanks rather than oak, which allows the emphasis to be on the fruit.


Vinsobres is a cru in the Côtes du Rhône and a great place to find amazing value. The wines from here reflect some of the character of its ultra-famous neighbour, Châteauneuf-du-Pape.


My attraction to wine began while I was working in a Portuguese restaurant in my hometown of Johannesburg, South Africa. My �rst job in Canada was with the LCBO in Ottawa. It gave me the opportunity to enroll in a sommelier course o ered at the local college and further expand my knowledge in wines and spirits. My husband has family and friends in France and when we visit, we always include wine regions on our itinerary. I’ve also been able to visit Niagara, Prince Edward County, the Okanagan Valley, Portugal, Spain, California and, of course, Stellenbosch when I return home. WINERY FOCUSInniskillin was founded on July 31, 1975 (the first winery license granted in Ontario in 46 years) by Karl Kaiser and Donald Ziraldo. The Reserve Cabernet Franc 2017 touches on this history – Cab Franc was one of the first red grapes to show promise here – and the Montague Vineyard Chardonnay comes from a vineyard purchased in 1982. Both wines will shine alongside barbecue fare.

Though certainly not common in Ontario, being more typically associated with Argentina or its native South of France, Malbec is successfully grown here in select small parcels. This example comes from the Southshore Vineyards: a small single vineyard with the soil and consistent sunlight to ensure the late-ripening Malbec ripens fully. Fruity and spicy, this wine will add a bit of local-exotic to grilled lamb burgers.
