(Gas) Meter security. Safety is old. Security is new. Gas meters are save.
In Germany this is guaranteed by the DVGW. (German Technical and Scientific Association for Gas and Water)
Smart gas meters are connected to a communication network.
Now gas meters have to transmit their data in a secure way.
In Germany this is guaranteed by the BSI. Bundesamt für Sicherheit in der Informationstechnik (Federal Office for Information security)

Connection of gas meters to a metering system in Germany. Legal requirements.
Every gas meter has to have an interface!
Whether they are (or ever will be) connected to a metering system or not!

Unlucky wording in the German Energy Economy Law (EnWG)
§ 21f EnWG states:
Meters for gas shall only be installed, when they can be securely connected to a metering system.

Gas meters with (integrated) valve.
Gas meters with (integrated) valves are not in the scope of the PP.
PP states that functionality “stop of delivery” (i.e. shut-down valve) is done by CLS.

Conclusions.
Data privacy and data security are not negotiable.
Gas meter data = electricity meter data = water meter data = heat meter data.
OMS Group supports updated European Standards on meter communication.
Due to national preparatory work convincing specifications for Europe developed.
But: possible contradictions between European Standards and German legislation.
Difficult argumentations between the experts coming from different worlds.
Massive changes to existing processes and models are inevitable.
