Recent assessments regarding the air quality in British cities have brought the issue of emissions generated by road vehicles under the spotlight – again. With major manufacturers and individual motorists potentially contributing to the problem, it raises the question, what steps can the aftermarket industry and motorists take to improve the environmental credentials of petrol and diesel vehicles on British roads?

Doug Bentley, Head of Research and Development at Klarius Products Ltd, explains that by specifying quality replacement aftermarket emissions products and ensuring that they are fitted correctly, fuel efficiency can be improved and the air quality in our towns and cities can be protected.

The two components that most clearly represent the initiative to improve air quality are the diesel particulate filter (DPF) and catalytic converter (CAT). DPFs capture soot particles from the exhaust stream – periodically reducing the soot to fine ash at high temperatures, then holding the reduced particulates within the device. CATs transform harmful NOx and CO gases from the engine into less harmful exhaust gases.

By selecting a type-approved replacement that is compliant to EU standards, these devices can preserve the original environmental compliancy of a vehicle. However, there are inferior products available on the market that will not work as well and present increased pollution risks.

REDUCING HARMFUL EMISSIONS WITH DPFS AND CATSDPFs contain an internal ceramic monolith which acts as a filter. An OEM equivalent aftermarket DPF will provide a long service life if installed on a vehicle, but some inferior replacements will feature monoliths that are half the size they should be. These DPFs fill with soot more quickly, requiring more frequent soot-to-ash reduction processes and increasing the likelihood they will become blocked, either with soot, due to short trips or ash due to a lower capacity. Both scenarios result in more frequent replacement.

The blocking with soot issue has compelled some vehicle owners to remove the device entirely, which results in large clouds of carcinogenic black smoke being emitted from the exhaust, especially under acceleration. The increased risks posed by DPF removal to air quality are clear.

CATs contain an internal strata like a DPF, but instead utilise precious metals to neutralise Nitrogen Oxides, Carbon Monoxide and Hydrocarbons created by the combustion process. Some catalysing DPFs also incorporate these metals as a wash applied to the monolith. Cheap CAT and DPF replacements usually compromise on the levels of precious metals inside the strata, which serves to exponentially increase the levels of dangerous emissions.

Like DPFs, some motorists and garages will collude in removing the CAT from the emissions system entirely, further increasing the levels of harmful gases released into the atmosphere. Physical removal of either device will result in failing an MOT test, if the internals have been

removed, (an illegal solution some garages still offer) then there is a good chance the vehicle will also fail the emissions segment of the MOT test.

THE IMPORTANCE OF FITTING CORRECTLYCorrect fitment also plays a key role in guaranteeing the effectiveness of an emissions system. A poorly fitted exhaust, CAT or DPF can leak gases into the atmosphere before they reach emissions control devices. An exhaust that has been extensively modified to fit an unsuitable vehicle or poorly designed may display increased – or reduced levels of back pressure. This results in higher fuel consumption, with reduced efficiency translating into increased emissions levels. For this reason, Klarius supplies the appropriate OE style fixings required for each product, ensuring optimum fitment.

It is also vital that joints and flanges connected in the system before the CAT or DPF is sealed with the correct dry gasket, rather than liquid, past or putty sealant material as this can find its way in the ceramic centre of either device and compromise it severely.

Therefore, selecting a product that seamlessly integrates with a vehicle and using the appropriate mountings, can maintain fuel efficiency and improve air quality. These key factors are why Klarius type-approves all applicable components within their range. It is possible that after the installation of the electric steering rack it may be necessary to perform the following actions:

1. Clear any errors using a diagnosis device.2. The steps to carry out for torque sensor calibration of the rack are as follows: a. Switch on the car ignition and start the engine. b. Centre the steering wheel (wheels straight) and

keep it in that position for 5 seconds approximately.

c. Turn the steering wheel completely to the left and keep it in that position for 2 seconds approximately.

d. Turn the steering wheel completely to the right and keep it in that position for 2 seconds approximately.

e. Centre the steering wheel (wheels straight). f. Switch off the car ignition and stop the engine. g. Switch on the car ignition again. h. Wait for 5 seconds. i. The warning light should switch off. If not, you

should take a short test drive. If the warning light is still on, repeat the procedure, increasing the time between step (f) and (h) to 45 seconds.

STEERING WHEEL SENSORS ADAPTATION AND RESETTINGIf you disconnect the battery the yellow steering wheel symbol and the ESP/traction control symbol will display. You must reset the steering sensors. Normally this is done through normal driving and the steering wheel symbol will reset by itself. If it doesn’t, use a VCDS to thoroughly check the steering system and reset it.

STEERING ANGLE SENSOR (G85) RESETNote: This applies only for models with Conti/Teves MK70 ABS/ASR. For Conti/Teves MK60 ABS/ASR/ESP look at vehicle specific procedures in ABS system documentation.

Prerequisites:• Start the vehicle.• Turn the steering wheel one turn to the right and one

turn to the left.• Drive in a short distance in a straight line on a level

surface, at a speed not higher than 12mph (20 km/h).• If the steering wheel is straight during the test drive,

then stop the vehicle with the wheels pointed straight.• Ensure that the steering wheel is not moved again.• Keep the engine running and do not turn off the ignition. • System voltage should be at least 12.0 V.

Note: After successfully completing the basic settings, the Steering Limit Stop needs to be adapted too.

• With the engine running, centre the steering wheel (±10°) and hold it centred for 5 seconds.

• Turn steering wheel completely to the left and hold it there for 2 seconds.

• Turn steering wheel completely to the right and hold it there for 2 seconds.

• Centre steering wheel (±10°). Switch the ignition to “OFF”.

• Switch the ignition to “ON” and wait 5 seconds.• The yellow steering wheel symbol on the instrument

cluster, the power-assisted steering warning light, should turn off. If it doesn’t, perform a short test drive.

CHECKING STEERING TORQUE SENSOR (G269) 00573Prerequisites:• Ignition ON• Engine ON (Idle)• System voltage should be at least 11.0 V.• Turn the steering wheel multiple times completely to the

left and right. The torque values should change.
