Smart Ophthalmoscope The aim of the project is to develop a technology demonstrator for a handheld, easy-to-operate, non- mydriatic, high-resolution (10µm) digital ophthalmoscope. The ophthalmoscope will capture retinal images for digital storage, allowing objective judgement/diagnosis and future reference by opticians and eye clinicians in the field. Key aims of the research are to integrate advanced opto-mechanics, illumination, image capture and image processing elements into a working system with real clinical and commercial value. “This could be the biggest advance in hand-held ophthalmoscopes in a hundred years,” says Professor Fred Fitzke of UCL Institute of Ophthalmology.
