SMART SLEEPERS®

Moving Towards Predictive Maintenance

SMART SLEEPERS®

SATEBA, CONSOLIS’ French subsidiary and the European leader in concrete sleepers manufactur-ing, and CEMENTYS, a French company specialized in infrastructure monitoring, have joined forces to develop an innovative track monitoring solution: the SMART SLEEPERS®.

The SMART SLEEPERS® are prestressed mono-block concrete sleepers equipped with Microlux sensors.

These sensors are embedded horizontally in the sleeper in the center and in the rail seats. They allow the SMART SLEEPERS® to gather static or dynamic data on the mechanical behaviour of the railway track when subjected to rolling stock loads.

SMART SLEEPERS® A Concrete Sleeper with Accurate and Resistant Embedded Sensors

The Microlux sensors have the following characteristics: • Resistant to weather, heat and cold and shocks and

vibrations•Accurate, reliable and durable (lasting up to 50 years)•Not subject to electromagnetic interference

After calibration, the sensors are able to measure the extent to which the SMART SLEEPERS® are bent in each location, providing instant and accurate measurements on the sleeper’s mechanical behavior.

Thanks to these measurements, the track can be immediately checked for the effects of the following: • Rolling stock speed•Under-sleeper pads, rail pad stiffness•Sleeper spacing•Ballast and platform quality•The Rail fastening system

The sensors can also improve monitoring. • They provide better knowledge of S&C bearers behaviour.•The characteristics of specific areas, such as tight-radius curves,

splice bars and expansion joints, are clearer.•They allow the design of the sleeper (length, etc.) to be optimized.

In the long term, these real-time measurements provide critical data on the mechanical behaviour of the railway track. This monitoring reveals the state of the ballasted track at any given time, how it changes and the exact manner sleepers lay on the ballast. The data collected by the SMART SLEEPERS® can be used for predictive main-tenance, reducing the need for costly preventive and corrective maintenance operations.

Track measurements provide information on how sleepers react to the following in the long term:•TEMPERATURE: ballast freezing, rail pad stiffening in cold weather, etc.•TRACk MAINTENANCE: before and after tamping, before and after

rail milling, etc.

Delivered in 2014, the first SMART SLEEPERS® will be in operation in 2015 on France's eastern SNCF high-speed line extension.

•DURABLE The Microlux sensors are embedded, not glued, in the concrete sleepers. Protected during the sleeper’s entire lifespan (up to 50 years), the sensors are very robust and resistant (as are the cables, connecting components, etc.).•UNOBTRUSIVE

The sensors are not intrusive (<0.05%) and do not affect the track’s mechanical properties.•RELIABLE

The Microlux sensors use fiber optics. A similar technology has been used for years in other industries, such oil and gas, construction and healthcare.•HIgH-QUALITY MEASUREMENTS

The measurements are accurate, reliable, linear and repeatable. The same quality is achieved whether the measurement is static or dynamic.•MULTIPLExINg

The technology allows for long-distance multiplexing of up to 15km.

The FBg is the sensing element in the Microlux sensor.A light source shines a light into the optical fiber. The FBg reflects the spectral component which satisfies the Bragg condition, a monochromatic Bragg wave-length that is analyzed by a data logger. When the FBg is subjected to changes in strain, the measurement causes a shift in the Bragg wavelength.Depending on the characteristics of the data logger used, the FBg enables dynamic measurements in the tens of kHz to be recorded. The FBg reports the frequency not the intensity. The signal can therefore be analyzed even if it weakens. Consequently, up to 20 sensors can be multiplexed to a single optical fiber con-nected to the data logger. It is possible to plug and unplug the sensors without interfering with the measurements
