Smarter Planet – The Core Idea

In the last twenty years, the world has– Deployed a global, high-

bandwidth network– Created a population of over

1 billion Internet users – Added roughly 4 billion mobile

telephones– Embedded billions of sensors

in our environment and infrastructure

– Invented globally-integrated business processes

Good Urban Planning is the Foundation of More Livable Cities

• Develop Neighborhoods that Promote Walking

• Prioritize Bicycle Networks

• Create Dense Networks of Streets and Paths

• Support High Quality Transit

• Zone for Mixed Use Neighborhoods

• Match Density to Transit Capacity

• Create Compact Regions with Short Commutes

• …

Cities – more than states, provinces or even nations – will increasingly determine the success or failure of our planet .

Challenges Exacerbated in Cities

Changing Ratio of Physical/Digital with Smarter Cities Solutions

Traffic Throughput

Volume of Vehicles

Opportunity for Smarter

• At some point adding additional physical infrastructure such as more roads stops adding to throughput … you hit a wall and you still have congestion.

• Application of Smarter Solutions, e.g., Analytics can push back to an acceptable throughput… and you can get that improvement exponentially.

The degree of ICT adoption affects the attractiveness of

a region’s business environment

Communications

Greater commerce and growth increases the use of transport infrastructure

Energy is the reason for a substantial part of all water

withdrawals

Water quality affects the health of all community

members

Human capital determines speed of

ICT adoption

Business

Energy & Utilities

Water

Citizens

Transport

Commuting affects quality of life

Transportation is one of the primary consumers of

energy demand

Industry accounts for a large proportion of water

withdrawals

A city is a “system of systems” with separate and interconnected challenges…

An Urban City - an example microsystem

As the world becomes more instrumented, interconnected and intelligent…

Smart traffic systems

Smart water management

Smart energy grids

Smart healthcare

Smart food systems

Intelligent oil field technologies

Smart regions

Smart weather

Smart countries

Smart supply chains

Smart cities

Smart retail

…it creates new opportunities across industries and countries to address these problems

Summary – Across many domains it is no longer necessary

to make a guess about what is happening today or might happen tomorrow

– It is possible to extract insight about today and make good predictions about tomorrow

– At the core Smarter Cities is about using what we already have more intelligently

– The principle of “Smart” is about recognizing the interconnectivities of systems and their impact on humanity
