What are GRP SMC Products?

FEATURES OF SMC GRP MANHOLE COVERS:

1. Free from fear of theft as the material is non-reusable and has no resale value

2. Easy to handle due to light weight, hence no risk of injury. SMC covers are 30% lighter than GRP Covers and 50%

lighter than DI Covers

3. Does not rust due to chemical / sewage / rain water

4. High service life with a minimum life span of 50 years

5. High on aesthetics due to varied colours available

6. No additional cost needs to be incurred to make it corrosion resistant

7. The pigments are inbuilt in the material and UV stabilised. Hence there is no peeling / fading of the colours due to

sunlight

8. SMC covers are flexible and regain their form after release of load

9. Locking arrangement is available depending on customer requirement

10. Good resistance to extreme temperature (-100 °C to +80 °C)

11. Each cover is CONSISTENT as it is made from moulds. No manual intervention is required. Piece to piece variation in

shape, size, colour & weight is NOT visible.

12. The complete cover is single piece hence top cover related issues are not seen

13. Metallic parts like LOCKS and HINGES are included into the mould before the pressing process takes place

14. CAN COMPLY with all testing parameters as per BSEN124 standard for composite covers

SMC is a high strength glass fibre reinforced thermoset moulding material which is normally compression moulded using heated mould tools under high pressure on a large press.

SMC combines glass fibre and unsaturated polyester/ phenolic/Vinyl and Acrylic modified resins, fillers (Calcium carbonate), catalysts, pigments and stabilizers and release agents to produce a high strength moulding compound

The manufacture of SMC is a continuous in-line process. The material is sheathed both top and bottom with a polyethylene or

nylon plastic film to prevent auto-adhesion. The liquid material is spread uniformly onto the bottom film. Chopped glass fibres

are deposited onto the mixture, the top film is introduced and the sandwich is rolled into a pre-determined thickness. The

formed SMC material is allowed to cure for 48 hours.

Once cured the material can be used for manufacture where it is placed as cut layers into the pre-heated moulds and

compressed at a set tonnage and time suitable for the size and load rating of the cover.
