General Objectives Aims
SMC MASTER’S DEGREE PROGRAMMES
The School of Media and Communication aspires to train professionals who will uphold the highest intellectual, ethical and professional values that promote creativity, critical knowledge,
technical perfection, social responsibility, and the spirit of enterprise. The master's programme in Media and Communication is designed with this vision in mind. It is expected that graduates of this programme will make valuable contributions to the media industry and the society at large.
The MSc programme in Media and Communication is a response to the needs of the industry and has been conceived as a combination of academic and professional training. This purpose is attained through curriculum design, especially with content that was developed in consultation with industry stakeholders, and by using the appropriate pedagogical methods and practices.
In the Writing for the Media Stream, we have kept in mind the desire of industry leaders for graduates with high conceptual and technical skills. Our programme is uniquely designed to produce professionals with flexible and adaptive skills, persons that are able to perform maximally not only in the media and communication industries but, in fact, in any business or professional environment. A master's degree from the School of Media and Communication is a guarantee of quality.
In the Media Enterprise Stream, the need of industry for talents that build and maintain corporate brands and images, and who are able to manage overall growth, has translated into a highly rewarding programme.
With phenomenal growth in film and video, in new media, and in ICT generally, not to speak of private operators in print, radio and television in Nigeria and Africa, the market is wide open for quality graduates in media and communication.
The Marketing Communication Stream manifests the harmony that exists between the School's research and the needs of the industry. This stream is the fruit of both academic planning and industry consultation. The programme is designed to match academic knowledge with field expertise. The programme exposes students to concepts, strategies and innovation in the world of advertising, public relations and marketing. The media and creative industries now seek a new kind of practitioner, one that is creative and dynamic and who can generate new products and sustain growth in an increasingly competitive market. Through the M.Sc. programme, we form new players for an industry undergoing rapid change.
Our pedagogical approach combines classroom experience with practical projects. The presence of media professionals (Senior Fellows and Fellows) who teach in the M.Sc. programme alongside academics ensures that students receive knowledge and skills that will make them highly competent and able to meet the challenges of operating in an increasingly complex and interdependent global environment.
The internship programme exposes students to real life professional experience over a minimum of three months. This ensures that students test their new found skills, knowledge and insights in the real world of practice before graduation.

PROGRAMME BENEFITSMaster of Science in Media and Communication
SMC MASTER’S DEGREE PROGRAMMES
The stream, Writing for the Media, provides graduates with advanced
creative skills and with specialized knowledge in writing and reporting
that can be applied to any media or form of communication. Rather than
specializing in only one narrow channel of communication (print,
audiovisual, advertising or public relations), graduates will be able to
apply their skills across the media.
At the same time, specialized interest areas are catered for through the
elective courses. The emphasis of this stream is on creating content and
core skill development. It is recognized that the quality of a media
product (a film, a TV program, a news story, an advertisement, an item
for the web) starts with the quality of its content. Communicating ideas,
stories and various media content in a creative and effective way is the
focus of this stream.
The stream on Media Enterprise is designed to help students understand
the media industry and the challenges of transforming creative ideas
into innovative media products. The programme therefore has a
substantial component of entrepreneurial studies to prepare graduates
for starting and managing enterprises in the media industry.
The emphasis on entrepreneurship is consistent with the current
direction of introducing entrepreneurship courses in university
curricula. Pan-Atlantic University has gained much experience in the
field of entrepreneurship over the past years through teaching and
consulting programmes at the Entrepreneurship Development Centre.
This experience is now applied to the media, a field of great potential for
innovative products and services.

The Mission of the Programme
The master's programme in film production is designed to develop creative and competent professionals who will, at the same time, be responsible, and ethically-minded persons. Given the important role that film can play in the promotion of culture and in contributing to social development, the programme will endeavour to impart to the students the required intellectual, ethical and professional values that will facilitate best practice and inculcate in them a sense of responsibility for the greater good.
Particular attention will be given to the need for high ethical standards in the exercise of professional work. Furthermore, the programme will seek to provide the kind of training that is inherently dynamic and capable of responding to the present and future needs of industry.
The programme will consist of intensive practical and theoretical courses, which will encompass key areas of film production such as scripting, directing, editing, cinematography and sound production. Due emphasis will be given to the four vectors that make film a composite profession: the artistic, the technological, the philosophical, and the entrepreneurial. The programme is structured such that it taps into the intersection of these vectors of film.
The programme will seek to erase the gap between the training acquired at the university level and the needs of the industry by facilitating direct interaction with the industry. The goal is to ensure that graduates from the programme will be industry ready and capable of generating gainful employment for themselves and others. The programme will also serve to prepare the students for further graduate studies in film and other cognate disciplines.

Master of Science in Film Production Full Time Part Time
The Philosophy of the Programme
The programme seeks to inculcate in the students the knowledge and the skills required for a successful career either in filmmaking or as an academic specialising in film. Thus the programme will be a combination of both the academic and the professional. It will seek to animate the intersection of theory and practice in the philosophical, the entrepreneurial, the technological and the aesthetic dimensions of film.
The programme seeks to link professionalism with integrity, and its core value, thus, is professional integrity. The focus of the programme, therefore, is on producing persons who are knowledgeable about film and the process of producing it. At the same time, these persons will be led to cultivate a critical spirit, with the ability of finding creative solutions to filmmaking challenges and the discernment to make good professional judgements. In this regard, emphasis will be given to the impartation of professional ethics such that the students come to appreciate the ethical dimension of the human person and the necessity of social responsibility.
By fostering the spirit of enterprise, the programme aims to prepare persons who can discern opportunities in the environment, actualise new possibilities in the economic and social spheres, and effectively manage the new media enterprises.
The programme will also strive to equip the students with technical competence by providing them with hands-on practical experience and a constant exposure to the latest developments in the field.
“ The programme seeks to link professionalism
with integrity, and its core value,
thus, is professional integrity...”

he Pan-Atlantic University, previously Pan-African University, was Tlicensed as a private university by the Federal Government of
Nigeria on the 12th of February, 2002. The University is owned by
the Pan-Atlantic University Foundation (PAUF), a not-for-profit Nigerian
foundation registered under the Company and Allied Matter Decree of
1990. The Foundation is managed by its registered trustees.
From February 2002, the Lagos Business School, LBS, became the first
school of the Pan-Atlantic University, but it had already been in existence
since 1991. The LBS was followed in July 2008 by the School of Media and
Communication. The Centre for Enterprise Development Services is the
third training unit of the University. The School of Management and
Social Sciences was established in 2014.
The fundamental inspiration of the Pan-Atlantic University is provided
by the Christian vision of man, society and economic activity. And the
University's mission statement is: "to form competent and committed
professionals and encourage them to serve with personal initiative and
social responsibility the community in which they work, thereby helping
to build a better society in Nigeria and Africa at large."
This statement encapsulates the purpose of the University.
Pan-Atlantic University contributes to national development by
providing academic programmes that are relevant to the needs of the
country.
The word 'university' implies a universal mentality: openness to other
persons, ideas, areas of knowledge, cultures far and near, without
discrimination, and this is what the PAU strives to put into practice. The
University is open to all people regardless of their nationality, race, sex,
religion or ethnic group.
The objective of education in our University is the well rounded
formation of the human person, and curricular activities are part of a
wider all round formation that is provided in the University. For this
reason, courses in the humanities form an important and considerable
component of every programme. The PAU also seeks, by the deliberate
design of its programmes, to inculcate and groom the entrepreneurial
spirit of its students and participants. It also has the aim of nurturing
individuals who are professionally competent, creative and enterprising,
zealous for the common good and able to make free and morally upright
decisions and who thus act as positive agents of change in service to
society.
