Dear Spring Mountain Families: April 10, 2017

As many of you know, one of my favorite before-school activities each morning is greeting Spring Mountain students and families either in front of the main entrance before the first bell or in the “cone zone” at the far south end of the parking lot where parent drivers say their morning good-byes to kids (more on that later in this newsletter). This important morning time not only allows me to hear from families about recent exciting events that took place at school (such as, “We sure had a great time at the Family Fun Night Carnival last weekend!”), but it also gives parents a chance to ask me some quick questions they normally wouldn’t have a chance to ask (“What are the lunch choices today? What time does Friday’s Hawk Happenings start? Do you think I’m having a good hair day?”). OK, so I only got that third question once, and I promise I didn’t answer. However, I did visit with one parent in the parking lot recently who told me, “Mr. Long, my daughter loved completing your Reading Challenge in November and December and is so excited to see her READ poster hung up in the school lobby, but she’s just not as into reading these days. Any suggestions to pump up the pages during these last few months of school? Suddenly, I felt more like a surprised referee who needed to give himself a technical foul for being unprepared with an adequate answer.

So, in the spirit of our 100+ student posters that are now decorating the school lobby (and the bracket-busting March Madness of college basketball that came to a close earlier this month), I immediately headed back to the locker room (alright, my office), dug out my whistle, and began thinking about what “fouls” I could call on Spring Mountain families searching for ways to “assist” their children into making reading a “slam dunk” during these upcoming months leading into summer. Hey, no booing allowed-- bet you didn’t know Spring Mountain’s Principal is also the school’s unofficial “Reading Ref”…and here are some fouls I’d love to call on your family!

Set A Goal Each Day To Read Together Whether it’s right after school, just before bedtime, or any other time in between, try to set a consistent daily time reserved for just you, your student, and some favorite books. During this time, find a quiet place, anywhere in the house, where you and your student can focus on the words and pictures. It won’t take long before your son or daughter will make the connection between the undivided attention and the fun of reading!

Ask Your Student Questions About The Pictures Or About What They Just Read While it’s great you’ve now got them focusing on the pages, we need to make sure students are comprehending what they’re reading. Do your best to ask questions that require more than a yes or no answer. Why do you suppose the author used that word? What do you think is going to happen next in the story? Why do you think that? Have you ever read something similar to this book? Which character do you like best in this story? Why?

TWEEEEEEEEEET!!! Yep, if you can stop and ask questions like this, I’ll have to call two more fouls on you-- this time, you should feel good about being charged with OVER THE BACK (I know you were looking over your students’ shoulders as they were reading), and REACHING IN, which, of course, you have to do if you’re going to point out key vocabulary words and interesting illustrations!

Of course, if you are able to reach this goal, it’s my principal duty as Spring Mountain’s Reading Ref to whistle you for two fouls-- GOALTENDING for sticking to the goal, and BLOCKING for officially “blocking out” quality reading time for your family!

Expect Resistance-- And Don’t Fight It! Let’s face it-- in an age of unlimited extracurricular activities like learning an instrument, sports practices, dance recitals, you name it-- not to mention the constant lure of video games at home (my arch enemy as a parent of three boys!)-- sometimes reading just isn’t going to happen. And just as any referee would tell a pushy coach, don’t press your luck. The last thing you want is a battle over playing time. Instead, be prepared to get back in the game by always bringing a book with you when you’re off to the baseball field or dance studio-- especially at a brother or sister’s activity. Waiting around is lots easier for everybody if there’s a story to share!

Be A Good Role Model-- Read Yourself! Research has shown that kids who love to read developed that love by watching other family members. Whether it’s a favorite cookbook, mystery novel, entertainment magazine, or the daily newspaper (or, in my case, usually the newspaper Sports section)-- make sure your kids not only see you reading, but see you reading for fun. They’re your number one fans-- so if they see reading is enjoyable to you, it won’t take them long to discover reading as enjoyable for themselves. As all of you who routinely check your students’ backpacks know, reading is a HUGE part of what we do each and every day at Spring Mountain. One of our top goals is to have Spring Mountain students reading and comprehending at or above their grade levels by the time they head off to middle school. Many of our students receive additional reading

instruction as part of their daily schedule, and we’re constantly inputting and reviewing data about kids’ improvement in reading fluency and comprehension. Not sure what types of books you should purchase or check out from the library for your Spring Mountain student? Please take a shot at contacting your child’s teacher! We believe instilling a love of reading in your kids is one of the most important calls you can make, and we’re always here to assist!

You didn’t think you’d get away with this one without my Reading Ref alter ego shining through at least once, did you? First, feel good about calling your own TIME OUT when your excitement about reading isn’t matching your student’s. Then, the next time you pull out a book with your student while waiting for one of those after-school activities to end, expect to be called for CARRYING-- and that’s good!

TWEET! TWEET! There goes my whistle again! If you show a love of reading to your kids, it makes me smile to think of all the fouls I could call on you-- how about one for CHARGING straight to your favorite comfortable chair? Or ELBOWING the pillows to just the right angle so your son or daughter can restfully look at what you’re reading? Better yet, if you’re reading in front of your kids, it likely means you’re not watching television…which temporarily makes the TV in your house-- you guessed it-- an ILLEGAL SCREEN!

Tuy nhiên, mới đây tôi có gặp một phụ huynh trong bãi đậu xe nói với tôi,” Ông Long, con gái tôi yêu thích hoàn tất chương trình Tranh Đua Đọc Sách của ông trong tháng Mười Một và Mười Hai và rất thích thú khi thấy tờ bích chương ĐỌC SÁCH của cháu được treo trên tường ở hành lang nhà trường nhưng hổm rày cháu nó không đọc nhiều như trước.. Ông có đề nghị nào để tăng cường việc đọc sách trong mấy tháng sau cùng của niên học hay không? Bổng dưng, tôi cảm thấy mình như là một trọng tài cần phải tự phạt mình một lỗi kỹ thuật bất ngờ vì không sửa soạn trước một câu trả lời chính xác.

Vì vậy, trong tinh thần của hơn 100 tờ bích chương đang trang trí hành lang nhà trường (và danh sách phá giải của Các Trận Tranh Đua vào Tháng Ba - March Madness - của các đội bóng rỗ trường đại học sẽ kết thúc đầu tháng này), tôi vội vã trở về phòng thay đồng phục (đúng vậy, văn phòng của tôi), lôi ra chiếc còi và bắt đầu nghĩ tới những “fouls” nào tôi có thể thổi phạt các gia đình Spring Mountain đang tìm cách “assist” con em của họ “slam dunk” trong việc đọc sách vào những tháng trước khi nghỉ hè. Đặt Ra Mục Tiêu Cùng Nhau Đọc Sách Mỗi Ngày Ngay sau khi tan trường về nhà hoặc trước khi đi ngủ hay bất cứ giờ nào khác, hãy cố đặt ra thời gian đều đặn mỗi ngày dành cho quý vị, con em và một vài quyển sách hay. Vào thời gian đó, hãy tìm một nơi yên tĩnh, bất cứ nơi nào trong nhà, quý vị và con em có thể tập trung vào chữ nghĩa và hình ảnh. Không bao lâu con em của quý vị sẽ có sự kết nối giữa sự chú tâm không chia cách và thú đọc sách!

Dĩ nhiên, nếu quý vị có thể đạt được mục tiêu này, nhiệm vụ chính của tôi là Trọng Tài Đọc Sách của Spring Mountain phải thổi còi phạt quý vị hai lỗi -- GOALTENDING vì đã bám sát mục tiêu, và -- BLOCKING - vì đã chính thức “chận ngang” dành thời gian đọc sách ấm cúng cho gia đình!

Hỏi Con Em Về Những Bức Hình Hay Về Những Điều Con Em Vừa Đọc Mặc dù giờ đây quý vị đã cho con em tập trung vào các trang sách, chúng ta cần biết chắc rằng học sinh hiểu rõ những điều các em đọc. Hãy khéo léo đặt các câu hỏi cần câu trả lời nhiều hơn chỉ trả lời có hay không. Tại sao con cho rằng tác giả dùng chữ đó? Con nghĩ điều gì sắp xảy ra kế tiếp? Tại sao con nghĩ thế? Con từng đọc chuyện gì giống như trong cuốn sách này không? Nhân vật nào con thích nhứt trong truyện này? Tại sao?

TWEEEEEEEEEET!!! Đúng, nếu quý vị có thể dừng lại và hỏi những câu hỏi như thế, tôi sẽ phải tặng cho quý vị hai lỗi nữa – lần này quý vị có thể cảm thấy thích vì bị phạt OVER THE BACK (tôi biết quý vị nhìn từ phía sau lưng khi con em đang đọc) và REACHING IN, nghĩa là, dĩ nhiên, quý vị phải vói tới nếu quý vị muốn chỉ ra chữ quan trọng và bức tranh vẽ hay!

Hãy Kỳ Vọng Sự Chống Đối—Và Đừng Gây Gỗ! Hãy đối diện với vấn đề -- trong thời đại của những sinh hoạt ngoài giờ học nhiều không kể xiết như học dụng cụ âm nhạc, thực tập thể thao, ban vũ luyện tập – chưa nói tới các trò chơi điện tử tại nhà (kẻ thù của tôi, vốn là cha mẹ của ba đứa con trai!) – chuyện đọc sách đôi khi không thể xảy ra. Và cũng như vị trọng tài sẽ nói với nhà dìu dắt hung hăng, chớ mong may mắn. Hơn thua trong giờ các con chơi là điều ta nên tránh. Thay vào đó, hãy sửa soạn trở về với dự tính của chúng ta bằng cách luôn luôn mang theo một quyển sách thật hay khi đi tới sân bóng rỗ hay phòng tập vũ – nhứt là tại các sinh hoạt của anh chị em trong nhà.

TWEET! TWEET! Tiếng còi của tôi nữa đây! Nếu quý vị cho con em thấy sự yêu thích đọc sách của quý vị, làm cho tôi mĩm cười khi nghĩ tới tất cả những lỗi mà tôi có thể gọi phạt – như CHARGING thẳng tới chiếc ghế bành mà quý vị ưa thích? hay ELBOWING chiếc gối đúng góc cạnh để con em có thể nằm yên xem quý vị đọc? Càng hay hơn nữa, nếu quý vị đọc trước mặt con em, ắt là quý vị không xem truyền hình… tạm thời làm TV trong nhà – quý vị đã đoán đúng - ILLEGAL SCREEN!

Như khi tất cả quý vị thường xuyên kiểm soát ba lô của con em biết, đọc sách là một phần LỚN LAO mà chúng tôi thực hành mỗi ngày tại Spring Mountain. Một trong những mục tiêu của chúng tôi là giúp cho các em học sinh đọc và hiểu ở mức độ ngang bằng hay cao hơn trình độ của lớp khi bước chân vào trường trung học đệ nhứt cấp. Nhiều học sinh nhận thêm sự hướng dẫn đọc sách là một phần trong thời khoá biểu hàng ngày của các em và chúng tôi liên tục thu thập và duyệt qua các dữ liệu về sự tiến bộ của các em về đọc lưu loát và thông hiểu. Không biết chắc loại sách nào quý vị nên mua hay mượn từ thư viện cho con em học sinh của Spring Mountain? Xin hãy liên lạc với giáo viên của con em! signed and dated note detailing your student’s after school

change of plans.This includes riding a different

bus or having a parent pick them up. We are aware that last minute changes are sometimes necessary. Please make every effort to call the school office

No matter how well we mayknow you and your family, it is important that we know whois in the building for the safety of our students and visitors,should an emergency occur. If you need to drop somethingoff for your student, you may leave it in the office and we can get it to them. This helps reduceclassroom distractions. Thank you for helping us keep our school safe.

Registration for New Students for Fall 2017

Registration for Fall has begun! If you know of someone that has moved into your neighborhood let them know they can register now. If you have a student that will be 5 years old on or before September 1st, 2017 they are eligible for Kindergarten. You will need proof of age, proof of address and current immunizations to register. New students grades 1-5 may register with proof of address. Our office hours for are 7:30-3:00 on school days. Best times to register during the day are 9:30-3:00. We look forward to meeting you!

Notes from the Nurse If you haven’t ready done so, please take the time to get your student’s immunizations up-to-date. The annual state immunization report is due to the Clackamas County Health Department in January. This means that students not current with their immunizations and those with a previous religious exemption that has not been converted to a non-medical exemption will be excluded from school on February 15, 2017 until their immunizations are brought up-to-date. For a detailed listing of immunizations and non-medical exemption instructions, please check the district website (Departments, Nurses, Vaccination Requirements). For immunization clinic information, please call the Clackamas County Health Department at 503-655-8471 or your health care provider’s office.

Share time, not the flu virus with your family

With the winter season upon us, families and friends often gather in close quarters. All of this can lead to more exposure to germs. So how do you stay flu free?

The best protection against the flu is to get a flu shot. But there are other ways to keep you and your family healthy this winter season. Follow these simple steps to stop the spread of germs: ● Wash your hands often with soap and water or an alcohol-based hand rub. ● Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth. Germs spread this way. ● Try to avoid close contact with people who are ill. ● Practice good health habits. Get plenty of sleep and exercise, manage your stress, drink plenty of fluids

and eat healthy. ● Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Throw the tissue away after use.

If your child does get the flu, please remember that students must be 24 hours free of fevers above 100.5° without the use of fever-reducing medications before returning to school and all related activities.

How do I get a flu shot? Many drug stores, the Clackamas County Health Department and your doctor’s office provide the vaccination.

4th Grade News 4th graders in Mrs. Brown and Mrs. Twitchell's class had a chance to study Oregon geography with the help of a giant floor map on loan from the Oregon Geographic Alliance at PSU. Kids are researching Oregon's highest peaks on Chromebooks and then building them to scale with blocks (by rounding the elevation to the nearest thousand) on the map. Nice work 4th graders!

ALL TREATMENT STEPS MUST BE DONE ON THE SAME DAY.

HOUSE TREATMENT:

1. Vacuum all carpets, floors, mattresses, furniture and the car. Dispose of the vacuum cleaner bag in the outside trash when finished.

2. Wash ALL clothing and bed linens in HOT water. 3. NON-WASHABLE items should be either: dry cleaned, placed in a HOT clothes dryer for

20 minutes (pillows, stuffed toys, etc.), placed in freezer for 48 hours, or sealed in a plastic bag for 14 days.

4. Treat ALL brushes and combs by boiling for 10 minutes OR soaking in lice shampoo for 10 minutes.

HAIR TREATMENT:

1. If using commercial lice hair products, treat all affected household members at the SAME TIME. Before application, wash hair with a basic perfume and conditioner free shampoo.

2. Comb hair thoroughly with a clean comb or brush. 3. Remove ALL NITS with a nit comb, fingernails, or tweezers to prevent REINFESTATION

by any nits not killed by the medications. 4. Notify all people who have recently been in contact with the exposed household member. 5. Contact your physician, health department, or school nurse for further directions

or advice.

SCHOOL NOTIFICATION:

PLEASE NOTIFY THE SCHOOL OFFICE IF YOU TREAT YOUR CHILD FOR HEAD LICE. This information is kept CONFIDENTIAL, but is important in tracking classroom cases to prevent further spread of head lice.

Examine each family member’s head. Treat ALL members of family at the SAME TIME.

2. Giặt TẤT CẢ quần áo và tấm trải giường bằng NƯỚC NÓNG. 3. Những đồ vật KHÔNG GIẶT ĐƯỢC nên: được tẩy khô, đặt trong máy xấy quần áo

NÓNG trong 20 phút (áo gối, đồ chơi thú dồn bông, v.v…), bỏ vô tủ đông lạnh trong 48 tiếng đồng hồ hay bỏ trong bao ni lông kín trong 14 ngày.
