Building use in the UK contributesabout 50% of the UK’s carbondioxide emissions and theconstruction contributes aboutanother 7%.

SMG recognises that the products ofour designs will have far moreenvironmental impact than ouroperations.

We realise there is a global need forsustainable construction and moreimportantly sustainable living. Wemake every effort to incorporatesustainable energy sources andmaterials.

Our intention is to create designs thatincorporate sustainability, satisfy theClient’s needs and complement thelocal area.

Our residential portfolio andexperience ranges from large scaledevelopments to single bespokehouses with varying design styles andfeatures.

We aim to ensure the living needs ofour Clients are fully explored whilstmaking sure the building, as adesign, either modern or traditional, complements the style within thelocal vicinity.

‘Hidden away in a secluded plotwhich overlooks the North Norfolktown of Sheringham is this property, which truly reflects the vision of itsowners and local architects, whoseaim was to create a unique designer“glass house” home. And the beautyis that you can see out from almostevery part of the house and yet, insuch a private position, there’s noone around to see in – except thepostman!’

Architecture is crucial within theeducational sector, as it activelyinspires developing minds.

We understand the importance ofensuring students are surrounded byinspirational areas and positive socialspaces.

SMG has worked on numerousprojects for local educationalfacilities, designing additionalteaching areas, places of residenceand administration rooms.

Education creates numerous designchallenges due to the need for gooddesign, usability and carefulbudgeting.

Master planning is something wehave been involved in since theearly days of the company andduring this time we have completeda wide range of projects across thebreadth and depth of Norfolk.

Working mainly for the private sector,on brown and green fields sites, wehave created designs and finelydetailed construction drawings.

We aim to take into account themain aims of the project withoutforgetting the need for privacy or theimportance of sustainability.

Master planning needs to include theneeds of the Client, the user and thesurrounding communities.

SMG has developed a prominentname in the public sector further toinnovative work on the TouristInformation Centre in Cromer as wellas numerous other projects for thelocal District Council.

Public project design is usuallygoverned by the need to create aniconic feature for a town or city, tocomplement walks, squares or retailareas as well as creating spacewithin, for public and private use.

Commercial buildings are generallydesigned for practicality rather thanaesthetics. We have completed alarge range of commercial buildingsand complexes, with a wide range ofspecific requirements and uses. Ourexperience and knowledge withinthis sector is continually developing.

‘It is a new hub of information fortourists and locals alike with a strikingroofline of conical turrets andcanopies on the Cromer skyline.’

SMG’s experience of conservationwork is broad, spanning acrossNorfolk and includes many differentstyles of buildings from varied historictime periods.

Our designs are intended tocomplement either the existingbuilding or the buildings within thesurrounding area. Whether this bematching similar design andconstruction techniques or ensuringa modern design doesn't detractfocus away from the traditional.

We have developed a thoroughunderstanding of the design stylesand detailing of different historicbuildings. We have also developeda strong working relationship with theConservation Department of thelocal Council.

SMG has over the years had thepleasure of working on many Placesof Worship varying from local ParishChurches to new build modernChurches.

We have a proven track record ofworking with the most sensitive issuesrelating to extensions, new build, andaccessibility alterations.

We believe it is essential to preserveour built heritage but also to createa design that satisfies our Client’sneeds and is beneficial to theChurch’s future.

‘We are very pleased with it. Itcombines the old and the newperfectly.’

For over a decade SMG has beeninvolved in a range of special careprojects throughout the East Angliaregion, mainly in association withlocal solicitors.

We appreciate the issuesexperienced as a result of seriousinjury and the necessity for positive, professional action to beimplemented.

These projects require goodbudgeting and constructionmanagement to ensure provisionsmeet the required standard.

We understand that a building hasto be designed primarily to satisfythe needs of the occupant and thisis emphasised considerably whentaking into account medical needs.

Retail design is influenced andguided by the surrounding area.

SMG understands the growing needfor well designed retail outlets as ameans of enhancing local townsand cities. The buildings should sitharmoniously within the existinglandscape, complementing the styleand feel of the existing structures.

Well designed retail outlets shouldconsider the needs of the targetmarket / customers along with theneeds of the Client.

Retail units usually demand largeopen internal spaces and thereforethe demand for good structuraldetail and planning is increased.

Although there is a need for largeopen spaces, flexibility to change oradapt the interiors should also beconsidered. The retail future ofstructures can never be certain andtherefore minimising the need foralterations has a positive effect onsustainability, efficiency and cost.
