The success of San Miguel and our students reflects the heart and spirit of the Tucson community. The strength and growth of San Miguel over the last ten years is the direct result of every student that has believed in themselves and persevered despite tremendous obstacles, every parent, every faculty and staff member, every person who has donated time and money, and every business and community partner.

Together, with the Spirit of God, we have woven a miracle on the Southside. The beautiful vision of San Miguel—to empower youth from underserved communities—has become a powerful reality. We now have 347 San Miguel alumni. Many of them could do anything in the world and they are choosing to invest their lives back into their communities as teachers, engineers, and business professionals.

Students truly enter to learn and leave to serve. Their gifts and transformational leadership are taking root in Tucson and beyond. And it’s just the beginning.

As San Miguel continues to grow in students, supporters, and CIP partners we look forward to the many gifts the future holds. Thank you for all of your support.

Blessings,

This year San Miguel expanded extra-curricular opportunities through generous community support. Students can now choose from drama, studio art, digital photography, graphic design and a variety of sports including co-ed soccer, basketball, volleyball, baseball, softball, cheer, and cross-country. These programs provide real world opportunities for students to hone their time management skills and work together as a team.

“THE FACT THAT I NOW HAVE A CLASSICAL PRODUCTION UNDER MY BELT IS A GREAT ACCOMPLISHMENT AND GIVES ME THE CONFIDENCE THAT I CAN TAKE ON ANYTHING!”

Senior Drama students worked in community partnership with Arts Express to perform Macbeth.

The Corporate Internship Program (CIP) is the career-based component of the academic curriculum needed to graduate from San Miguel. Each student works one day per week in a professional work setting, during the school year. This pays for approximately 40 percent of the cost of tuition and operations. On the job students begin to recognize their own potential and develop lifelong skills.

Norma Durazo has made one thing clear to her six children: “You are going to college.”

“Since they were small I’ve told them, ‘College it is.’”

She’s a fiercely dedicated single mom that passes on her hard-learned life lessons to her kids with a blend of humor and no nonsense. Norma didn’t attend college and said she wants something different for her children than a life of always working hard but for minimal pay.

“I don’t tell them to go to college for me, I tell them, “Go to college for yourselves.”

Eight years ago, when Norma’s oldest daughter, Hillary, was going into the ninth grade Norma researched many high schools, something she had done at every step of her children’s education.

“I’M GRATEFUL THAT SAN MIGUEL IS HERE,”

—NORMA DURAZO

Norma heard about San Miguel from a client at the salon where she works. At first she was skeptical. A new school—just two years old—that teaches kids how to work?

“I work a lot and have a hard time making ends meet. I don’t want my kids to do that. I want them to get a good education so they can go to college,” she remembered thinking.

As Norma looked deeper into San Miguel, she liked the rigorous classes, the spiritual and moral values, the small classes where her daughter wouldn’t get lost in the crowd, and the opportunities to explore different colleges and careers.

“I called and made Hillary an appointment,” Norma said.

“When Hillary walked out of the interview, she said, ‘This is the place

for me.’ She was one of the last students to be accepted that year.”

But the first of many in her family. Hillary dove into opportunities that

San Miguel offered. She was one of the first freshman to apply and be accepted to a summer program at

Cornell University. She also attended summer programs at the University of Michigan and the University of Wisconsin. Hillary used her summer program stipend to pay her own tuition into San Miguel each year. She still keeps in touch with one of her CIP supervisors from her first job placement.

scholarship, and hard work. Twins Nicholas and Natalie are the

oldest of the final four. Twins Edgar and Raul are nine months younger. When the two older twins were entering fifth grade, Edgar and Raul were tested, and allowed to skip fourth grade so they could all be at the same school and in the same grade.

“They have different strong points and each has something different to give. They thrive on each other,” Norma said. “And they help one another with their homework.”

She is happy that at San Miguel she sees her children feeling supported, challenged, and encouraged by their teachers, loving their CIP jobs, and all looking ahead to what college they will attend.

“I’m grateful that San Miguel is here,” Norma said.

“My kids have also inspired me.”“I registered to go to Pima. General

studies. Part time, because I do have a full time job. I start classes next semester.”

After graduating from San Miguel in 2010, Hillary received a full scholarship to study Industrial Engineering at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She will graduate May 2015 and has already been offered and accepted a fulltime manufacturing engineering position at Ford Motor Company.

Norma’s oldest son, Peter,

graduated from San Miguel in 2014 and is now a full time student at Pima Community College, where he is completing some of his basic college courses.

Norma’s four youngest kids are all part of the San Miguel Class of 2016. Like their older siblings, they are making a positive mark on campus through their leadership,

A student reflects on Lasallian values in her lifeRegina Q., Class of 2015, has attended national Lasallian Youth Assemblies, participated in Lasallian service projects, and helped lead San Miguel’s El Otro Lado immersion program.

“At Casa Maria Soup Kitchen, I learned that to solve any social justice issue, not just poverty, all factors must be addressed. Learning about how to work towards a better future improves my education. I have learned how I can serve others in the future and it gives me more insight into who I am and who I want to become.”

“As an El Otro Lado Student Leader, I helped lead a group of students in the program who were from Cathedral High School in Los Angeles. We were all very different; but within the first couple of hours of meeting each other, it felt as though I had known

them for years. I think our Lasallian roots had something to do with this connection. It was an unspoken understanding of general respect that we had for each other that allowed us to be open with one another, something the world needs a little more of.”

“I HAVE LEARNED THAT NO MATTER WHO YOU ARE, HOW OLD YOU ARE, OR WHERE YOU ARE, THERE WILL ALWAYS BE A WAY FOR YOU TO HELP OTHERS.” —REGINA Q. CLASS OF 2015

Regina volunteering at the Oregon Food Bank.

Members of the Class of 2014 worked with the Sonoran Glass School to make 10 murals that repre-sent the Lasallian Core Principles of Respect and Social Justice. They now hang in the main lobby.

San Miguel High School, a Catholic, Lasallian learning community

empowering youth from underserved families, nurtures a Christian spirit and integrates rigorous academics with practical experience, thereby

transforming students to be prepared for college and career.

Br. Chris helps shape Lasallian worldwide mission Brother Chris Patiño, FSC, Dean of Discipline and Student Services, traveled to Rome to join Brother delegates from around the world for the 45th General Chapter of the Institute of the Brothers of the Christian Schools. Delegates met for 51 days to evaluate the life of the Institute, provide for its continuing adaptation and renewal, and establish the main guidelines for

the future of the Lasallian mission. Br. Chris said, “I learned a lot about our Institute, the Lasallian mission around the world, and the challenges that we face today. There is a lot to celebrate, but we face diverse challenges. We cannot forget prayer and the need to remain attentive to the Spirit. This is God’s work!”

El Otro Lado program receives national award Lasallian Association of Secondary School Chief Administrators presented San Miguel High School with the Brother Michael Collins, FSC Award for the El Otro Lado Program. The unique program focuses on immigration awareness and is led by former Lasallian Volunteer, Kenenna Amuzie. The award honors the legacy of Br. Michael who died in 2012. He was president of DeLaSalle High School in Minneapolis, MN. San Miguel’s program was chosen for fostering excellence and diversity while creating a sense of community among students of every religion, every race, and every socio-economic group.

Tucson News Now interviewed students about their Tedx talks.

STUDENTS GIVE LOCAL TEDX TALKSSan Miguel High School is the only high

school in Tucson to host an independently organized TEDx conference. The theme for TEDxSanMiguelHighSchool was “The Road to an Answer.”  Select San Miguel juniors, who interviewed to become a student speaker, explored this topic and shared their perspective during the conference in front of a live audience.

TED is a nonprofit devoted to “spreading ideas that matter,” usually in the form of short, powerful talks. The TEDx Program is designed to help communities, organizations and individuals spark deep conversation and connection through local  TED-like experiences.

“IT’S A GREAT WAY TO GET YOUR IDEAS OUT THERE AND IT’S A REALLY GOOD STEP IN TRYING TO BECOME SOMEONE THAT’S GOING TO CHANGE THE WORLD, NOT JUST LIVE IN IT.” —MARCO C., CLASS OF 2015
