Thank you for taking a few moments to read this first edition of our newsletter. It is a particularly special issue, not only because it is the inaugural printing, but also because it was conceived to officially inform you of a change that has occurred in the ownership of the practice of the Drummond Dental Group, from Dr. Lloyd Flanagan to myself.

Dr. Flanagan and I have been collaborating together for many years now to provide you with the best that dentistry has to offer. It is an office in which I am proud to work, as it houses all of you great patients that I have met throughout the years, my personal friends and also my retired father’s patients whom I adopted with much pleasure two years ago. As of January 1st 2011, I have officially taken the helm of our practice; The Drummond Dental Group. It is with great enthusiasm that I look forward to meeting all those that I have not yet met, and it is with certitude that I say that there are great things to come.

For those that may not know me, 2012 will take me into my 15th year of practice as a dentist. I was born in Montreal and raised within a traditional Ukrainian background.

As we move into the years ahead, we look forward to treating you, your family and friends with the finest dental care possible and I thank you for your continued confidence in our team.

Sincerely,

Dr. Taras Konanec D.D.S.

Wake Up Your SmileIt’s all good news about whitening

Just when you think there can’t be any more great news about whitening techniques – there is! The ingredient dentists use to restore the healthy and radiant

luster to your smile is actually milder than your morning glass of orange juice. You can be confident that your dentist-supervised teeth whitening is both safe

and effective. You see, the dentist doesn’t put “white” on your teeth. Instead, stains are

gently removed from your tooth enamel which results in a whitening effect. The stains can occur as a result of the food you eat, tobacco smoke, tea and coffee, and even normal ageing. Life makes those stains pretty tough to avoid, but our dental team is up to the task. Professional techniques can even refresh smiles dulled by root canal treatments, prescription drugs, or discoloration that is part of the tooth’s actual structure.

We can offer much, much more than teeth whitening to brighten your smile…n Bonding can fill in microcracks, camouflage deep stains trapped within

your tooth’s surface, and mask white splotches or brownish gray bands.n Veneering your teeth with bonding or ceramic materials offers an

added bonus. They can build up your tooth surfaces to correct ridges and uneven lengths as well as reduce unsightly spaces.n Natural-looking white fillings, instead of dark grey metal ones, can finesse your smile rejuvenation.

Your smile doesn’t have to be yesterday’s news. Give it - and you - another chance!

Digital X-Rays What are they?

The 100th anniversary of the use of dental radiographs, or x-rays, has already come and gone! And in this century, digital technology is quickly changing the way we use x-rays.

While digital x-rays still require a patient to “pose” for a picture, the process and result are dramatically different. Instead of film, a highly sensitive electronic receptor is inserted into your mouth. An electronic image is captured instantaneously and stored on a computer’s database. These digital x-rays give us a clear, high-resolution view of teeth, bone, root, and tissue; all while using up to 70-90% less radiation than traditional x-rays.

This new technology is just one more tool we at the Drummond Dental Group can use to provide you with the best and most efficient dental care possible.

Smiling With ImplantsThey won’t know if you don’t tell!

Who wouldn’t want to look better, speak better, eat better … and smile more? Dental implants are now the treatment of choice for many people who need to replace missing teeth.

Interestingly, implants are considered by many dentists to be a more conservative intervention than traditional bridges or fixed partial dentures. They require only normal brushing and flossing to maintain oral health, unlike bridges that may make cleaning awkward. Because implants are anchored into the bone like the roots of your teeth, they act like natural teeth and preserve and strengthen the underlying bone. There is no need to shape adjacent healthy teeth, and there are no plates to affect comfort and fit.

An implant has two parts: a root made of biocompatible metal, and a custom-made tooth crown which is attached to it. Most implants are made of titanium, an inert metal proven effective at fusing with living bone.

In one survey, patients who had their prosthetic appliances replaced with implants rated them nine out of ten – second only to natural teeth, and far above the two out of ten for their prosthetics! If you’re worrying about your age … don’t! The oldest known implant patient is 88; the youngest 15.

With implants, your friends won’t know how you’re looking so good – but you’ll feel so great, you might just want to tell them!

The final procedure is the attachment of a prosthetic tooth to the abutment.

Gumline

The abutment is attached to the exposed anchor during the second surgery.

The anchor is placed into the jawbone during the first surgery. Over the next six months the bone cells grow closely around the anchor, holding it firmly in place.

Healthy Teeth DietEnsure yours!

Nutrition plays an extremely important role in oral health, particularly during childhood. The greatest single threat to the dental health of children comes from the excessive use of non-milk extrinsic sugars found mainly in sodas, juices, biscuits, cakes, candy, and table sugar. These sugars provide about 17% of the energy for most children. The figure should be no more than 10%.

The first line of defense, after cutting down on sugars, is to immediately brush the teeth.

A family plan to eat well, to follow a rigorous home oral care program, and to schedule regular dental checkups will go a long way toward a lifetime of shining smiles!

Our mission is to provide our patients a lifetime of the finest dental care and optimum oral health. Our team is committed to fostering relationships based on trust, excellent customer service and truly listening to the needs of our patients. We

are dedicated to keeping up with the ever changing advances in dental science and promise to pay careful attention to

detail when providing your treatment. With care, timeliness and a gentle touch, we will strive to meet your needs and

exceed all of your expectations.
