Context

Location of Internship: My internship will take place in an educational setting, specifically a second grade classroom. I will also address the faculty and staff at the school/district where I work by developing a website on the features of a Smartboard. Currently, I am employed at Ravenel Elementary School through the School District of Oconee County and I will be completing my internship within these entities. Ravenel Elementary is located in Seneca, South Carolina, and supports approximately 50 faculty and staff (administrators, teachers, instructional aides, special education personnel, etc.). The products that I will use to complete this internship include: a website, Smartboard, tutorials, Journeys Reading Series, and a blog. Ultimately, I hope to increase my students’ comprehension while reading the specified stories each week and also enhance interaction and communication skills within the class. In addition, I plan to create a website on the features of a Smartboard and present information on how to develop interactive lessons to increase student involvement.

Mission:The mission of our school is to “nurture a partnership among all members of our Ravenel School family in order to grow life-long learners who are creative, critical thinkers, and socially responsible leaders prepared for the 21st century” (School Website).

“We envision a school that: Responds to the individual needs of students, Assessment is on-going and determines instruction, Values the role of parents, community, and school to educate our children, Excellence is the standard, Nurtures problem-solvers and responsible citizens for a global society, Each member of the school community is a life-long learner, Loves each child who enters our doors” (School Website).

“At Ravenel Elementary School, we believe: All students can learn. It is our charge to educate the whole child. Student learning is the primary focus of the school and each child has the right to achieve this

potential. The school thrives when all students and community members share a sense of duty to one

another. Students succeed when they are empowered to make appropriate decisions and accept

responsibility for their choices. School should be a place where respect, responsibility, and honesty exist where students feel safe. On-going assessment should drive the curriculum and should determine the instructional needs of

individual learners. Education should prepare students for the 21st century.

Home, community, and school work together to benefit all students” (School Website).

Learning Goals and Objectives

During the internship, I will develop and refine my skills, knowledge and ability to: Identify specific areas of need through a pre-assessment in order to address the teachers at my

school. Develop an appealing website on the features of a Smartboard, including how to create interactive

lessons to enhance student involvement. Construct an online resource to assist teachers in the implementation of a Smartboard. Create a tutorial on the classroom blog and educate my students on how to use the features within

this tool, express their thoughts and opinions through written communication, allow for interaction and involvement within the class, and also show them that they may access this information from various places (e.g. school, home, etc.).

Examine reading selection test scores before- and after- the blog has been implemented to determine if the online blog increased student comprehension.

Responsibilities and Tasks

To achieve my objectives, I will: Create a pre- and post- assessment in order to address the specific areas of need for teachers at

my school. Meet with my mentor to discuss these issues and determine the best plan of action. Acquire knowledge on the features of a Smartboard with the intention of developing an effective

online resource (website) to assist teachers in the implementation of this tool. Design an appealing website on a Smartboard that considers the principles and theories discussed

in our foundational courses. Set up a classroom blog and maintain the tool throughout the corresponding time period. Develop a tutorial(s) to teach my students about online blogs. Provide ample time for students to become involved and interact with one another about the

reading selections each week using the online blog. Examine test scores (pre- and post- blog) to identify strengths and weaknesses (increase student

comprehension?).

Deliverables

To demonstrate achievement of my objectives, I will submit for my internship portfolio: An online resource (website) displaying the features of a Smartboard A classroom blog with student responses Any tutorials that I create for the Smartboard website or classroom blog Pre- and post- assessment data from addressing both areas (Smartboard and classroom blog) 3-10 page reflection on internship experience
