Darwin‟s First ANZAC day
"Why, do you grieve for us who lie
At our lordly ease by the Dardanelles?
We have no need for tears or sighs,
We, who passed in the heat of fight
Into the soft Elysian light;
Proud of our part in the great empire.
We are content. We had our day,
Brief but splendid-crowned with
power
And brimming with action; every, hour;
Shone with a glory none gainsay.

Armistice Day, Darwin,
11 November 1918Every available flag in Darwin appeared to
have been requisitioned on Tuesday to
honour the signing of the armistice and
the cessation of hostilities. Bells were rung
and a number of steam whistles were
blown. ... The North Australian Meat Co.,
Limited, has given its employees a week's
holiday on full pay to celebrate.

Armistice Celebrations,
16th December 1918[The procession began with] A lorry, with
all the Allied nations' representatives
onboard, looked perhaps, the prettiest
part. Next followed the Japanese with their
"Rising Sun" and other banners; the
Greeks, With one in full national regalia, at
their head, were well re-presented. Lastly,
the Chinese, who practically had a
procession of their own

Beer Boycott, at War‟s End
“ The lock-out of State Hotel employees was
declared off on Friday afternoon ... Thus
ends another instance of costly blundering
by utterly tactless and irresponsible
officials. The loss of revenue sustained by
the hotel bars being closed while the
meatworks employees were on holiday on
full pay, and the whole town was jubilating
over the armistice, must have been
considerable.”
