Saginaw Chippewa Indian Tribal member, “Smokey Joe” Jackson, was a gifted, self-taught, woodcarver whose artistic object of interest was Michigan’s woodland wildlife, such as birds, snakes and fish.
He was born in 1921 in Rosebush, Michigan and spent his lifetime in Isabella County. This included his employment at Central Michigan University. He was a veteran of the United States Army and served during World War II. As a hunter and fisherman, he took this opportunity to closely study wildlife and used those observations to carve and paint incredibly detailed, realistic and

beautifully artistic replicas of thewildlife he witnessed.
The Ziibiwing Center is pleased to have in its collection nearly 40 objectscreated by Mr. Jackson including those donated by the Chippewa Nature Center in Midland and six carvings donated by Ms. Lillian Osborne of Saginaw, Michigan in 2015.
These objects will be on display during Ziibiwings’ annual NativeFest andremain on view from July 24 through July 29, 2017 from 10am - 6pm. This collection showing will be free and open to the public. Don’t miss this beautiful display.
