Joan has joined the Landscape Committee as a member-at-large and Bob Steiger will be available to assist all committees with one-time events and special projects. President’s RemarksHi Neighbors,If you haven’t been around SMR this summer, we have had a hot, hot dry June and July. SMR looks great.A few improvements since Spring include lining out the tennis court for dual use (tennis and pickle ball), refreshing some of the roadside gravel, applying a large patch to the upper part of Colorada and painting the utility boxes to make them less obtrusive.

LandscapeOh the days grow shorter - so the song goes and so does the weather begin to cool off in the Old Pueblo.  We have had some good rains this summer and therefore we have extensive growth of our landscape.  As last year, I think we all should just sit back and enjoy the greenery before we start cutting and trimming all over our neighborhood.  We are experiencing big swings in our climate - severe drought and then copious rainfall.  Please bear with us as we take a serious look at what we could or should do.  We still have an absolutely lovely location to enjoy so let's concentrate on all the good things we treasure in SMR.  As you re-emerge into your

gardening activities, please check on your drip systems and ground cover to make sure it is sufficient to do a good job at weed control and water retention in your yards.  If you sustained any wind damage, make sure you have a landscaper on call to deal with any that may occur when you are out of town or traveling.  Please make sure you have a phone number on file for us to call in the event we need  to reach you and you are out of town.  Planting time is around the corner in the late fall so make your plans now - viva Arizona - Sylvia Burton, Chairman

RecreationOur typical Tucson August heat has drawn a lot of us “summer survivors” to the pools for a chance to cool off. As always, I thank all of you that have made certain chairs and lounges are being returned to their original locations for other people to enjoy.Even during the summer the tennis court is still being used, normally in early mornings. Pickle ball continues to be enjoyed by a group that plays every Wednesday at 6:30 AM. Come join us. It’s fun, easy to learn, and a great social event.

As a reminder, water aerobics is held every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday at 8:30 AM at the east pool. Open to anyone who has a bathing suit. Yoga is held every Wednesday at 9:15 AM at the clubhouse. A big thank you to Nancy Bower for her continued guidance of the program which has inspired a strong following of HOA residents for many years. Please don’t hesitate to contact me at [email protected] or 615-9669.

ArchitectureI recently received a phone call from a resident in SMR who's original outside light sconce had completely fallen apart and could not possibly be restored to the original. She was beside herself in trying to find an exact match with lighting vendors and could not! I informed her that the light designs used when Fairfield was built in the 1980s are not currently available to homeowners. The original equipment can be maintained only until it deteriorates to unsightliness. At this point, the homeowner has many options. She was relieved to hear there were options. There are a few key things to remember when replacing or adding any

outdoor light sconces:1. New, replacement, or additional light fixtures mounted on your home's exterior walls or mounted on the front

lamp post need prior Architecture Committee (AC) approval. 2. It is required that the fixtures be the darker, bronze-like tones or black. Although our traditional look is Mission

Revival Architecture, you can submit a different style IF it is compatible with the overall theme and tone of SMR. We also require a design that has a top cover to avoid shining light directly up into the sky and will focus light laterally and

downward (best for security and safety lighting). Additional information and practical guides, including links to vendors of approved devices, are available from the International Dark-Sky Association at http://www.darksky.org. You can also contact a member of the Architecture Committee. We have photos of lights owners have selected and had approved that can be used for suggestions or ideas. When submitting ANY design for approval, include a color representation of the lamp. The easiest way to do that is to take a shot with your cell phone camera, clip out the manufacturers advertisement OR go online and do a "cut and paste."

3. Try to orient your lights in a way that does NOT reflect into your neighbors' yards or up at the night sky. To the maximum extent practicable, you must place and direct your exterior lights so they do not direct light toward or interfere with surrounding properties. A simple conversation with your neighbors usually avoids future complaints.

4. Ensure that your outdoor lights are at the lowest possible brightness (Lumens) level but still provides adequate lighting. When replacing the bulbs, the LED option provides maximum life for minimum power usage, but have a more expensive initial cost.

5. Whenever possible, use timers to turn off yard lights when not needed. (This includes holiday lights!)6. The only light that you MUST LEAVE ON EVERY NIGHT (DUSK TO DAWN) is the front post-lamp. It

provides our basic safety and security lighting (in lieu of street lights). Please check you front post-lamp bulbs to make sure they aren't burnt out.As the existing outside light sconces get older, they will eventually need to be replaced. It is the hope that following these basic guidelines will make the experience a successful and less frustrating one. Our Architecture Committee is: Andy Vall, Art Schwartz, Bob Cole, Bill Salisbury, Barbara Halterman, Jim McAlister, Martin Alkin, Sandy Glasser, and Larry Glasser

RoadsThe Roads Committee determined an approximate 120 square foot section of asphalt on Via Colorada at the intersection of Placita del Tio should be patched now rather than waiting until the next budget year. We believe the summer rains were adding to the problem. Upon opening the patch area we found a dry, firm, but inconsistent nor conventional base course consisting of stone interspersed with sand and clay. The work was completed in early August by Tucson Asphalt. Water infiltration to our roads is of great concern and will be continually monitored for problem areas.

Thank you to Mont Murry, John Rourke, Jim Kercheval and Todd Hansen for your help during my summer absence. Please don’t hesitate to contact me at 303-877-5019 with your comments or suggestions. Tom Triplett

Neighborhood WatchChange in Block LeadersFor a number of years, Ruth Turpin has served as a Neighborhood Watch block leader covering all the homes on her street -- Loma del Bribon – as well as several homes located on Paseo Penoso (addresses 6850 – 6940). We are pleased to announce that Art Schwartz, who lives in that area of Penoso, has agreed to cover those addresses. Thanks to Ruth for her service and our appreciation for her commitment to continue to cover the homes on Loma del Bribon. As many of you are aware, long-time residents Minnette and Bruce

Friedman recently sold their home in SMR. Bruce served as SMR’s Neighborhood Watch Chairman for a number of years. In addition, he served for many years as a block leader watching over homes with even addresses – 4050 through 4252 Camino Ferreo. Joan Nevin who covers the odd numbered addresses in that area has agreed to take on those that Bruce was assigned. Our thanks to both Bruce and Joan!Post LightsOur monsoonal storms have been responsible for a number of post light outages in homes where residents are away. Fortunately, most of these resident have designated emergency contacts so this problem has been easily addressed. If you have not designated a backup person for your home or if your emergency contact is out of date, please contact me, your block leader or Kathleen Flaherty, our Data Base Manager, to provide this information. Thanks for your assistance in this regard.Roger Wiswell, ChairNeighborhood Watch Committee
