Atmospheric corrosion in coastal regionsAs its name well indicates, atmospheric corrosion describes the reaction of the air oxygen with a metal, at ambient temperature, when moisture and pollutants combine to create an electrolyte film on its surface.
It could be compared with corrosion in liquid medium except that the corrosion products can evaporate completely during the drying phases to recompose during the wet phases.
The corrosivity classification is defined by three parameters: pollution, airborne salinity, and relative humidity.
The atmospheric corrosion phenomenon is closely related to the pollutants encountered in the atmosphere and the moisture percentage.
In Hong Kong area, the main pollutants contained in the atmosphere are sulfur dioxide SO2, various nitrogen oxides Nox, the chlorides Cl and dust, mostly coming from the mainland.
From the corrosion point of view, chlorides (especially present in coastal areas) and SO2 (coming from the combustion of coal and oil) are the most important species.
For itself, SO2 is responsible for acid rains because when reacting with water it produces sulfurous acid H2SO3.
Saline particles in marine atmospheres also accelerate metallic corrosion processes; marine chlorides dissolved in the layer of moisture considerably raise the conductivity of the electrolyte layer on the metal.
Sustainability The construction sector being energy consuming, new policies all over the world aim at protecting properties and delay demolition. Mostly retro-fit and sustainable systems with easy maintenance will be favoured.
Many buildings in Hong Kong have their drainage systems exposed to climatic stresses a way or another: U.V, heat and damp.
In the East Pacific rim region, including Hong Kong, the climatic stress is increased by atmospheric pollution, similarly observed in the China mainland area, which enhances acidic aerosols.
Plastic waste water drainage systems are mostly sensitive to heat variation and are ageing under U.V effects whilst cast iron pipeworks are not. But being metallic systems, if not suitably protected, they suffer from atmospheric corrosion.

PAM pipe systems PAM cast iron pipe systems are tough and the quality of their zinc coating will still extend their lifespan. In normal operating condition, they need minimal maintenance during their service life.
Should new appliances be added, cast iron pipe systems are flexible and allow possible extensions or retro-fit. Removable mechanical couplings make them easier and cheaper, without cutting into the stack.
Protect your pipes through galvanic effect.PAM cast iron drainage pipe systems are worldly recognized for their outstanding properties and reliability in operation: strength, mechanical stability, accidental pressure resistance, long lasting water tightness
Cast iron being a metallic alloy is though sensitive to corrosion. The benefit of more than 100 years of experience in pipe systems, substantiated by numerous tests, conducted in labs and on the field under operating conditions has resulted in the design of effective coatings, fitted for specific purposes.
Waste water or rainwater drainage systems must fit their purpose over time despite adverse exposures. The pipe systems shall be suitably coated to resist corrosion and protect their service life.
To protect pipes from external corrosion, Saint-Gobain PAM has developed flame applied zinc coating.
The zinc metal coating is an active protection provided by the galvanic action of a zinc-iron cell.
This action is twofold:
- Formation of a stable protective layer of insoluble zinc salts
- Self-healing of any accidental damage.
Zinc metal coating is an excellent corrosion inhibitor and is extremely effective in extending the lifespan of products adversely exposed to climatic stress.
To address the corrosivity level of the Hong Kong area Saint-Gobain PAM carried out test to select the most adequate pipe external coating to withstand 3 000 hours of salt spray tests acc to the test method of ISO 9772 : 2012*, and comply with EN 877 requirements as for blistering and rusting criteria.
After lab tests, substantiated by a report from the Swiss PEAk Laboratory, and full scale tests, SAINT-GOBAIN PAM retained for the new PAM SMU Zn range a zinc metal coating applied on the pipes in thick layer, fully adapted for climatic stresses.
Products features and compliance to StandardsThe SMU Zn range fully complies with EN 877 requirements. This compliance is third party validated.

Watertightness, now and later.
Cast iron mechanical stability, the excellent properties of the mechanical couplings such as pressure resistance, the careful selection of the elastomers and their long lasting characteristics ensure the PAM pipe systems keep watertight over time.
Owing to conventional installation with simple tools, instant water tightness is also easily reached.
Mechanical stability
PAM cast iron is not sensitive to climatic or thermal stresses. Its mechanical properties are stable; the performances of the PAM cast iron pipe systems will not deteriorate over time thus ensuring long term serviceability.
Resistance to climatic stress
Exposed pipe systems can be submitted to solar radiation, damp or heat. Unlike for plastics, cast iron’s mechanical properties, are not sensitive to U.V ageing, and cannot be altered.
Unrivalled toughness.
Spun using a «de Lavaud» process, PAM cast iron pipes show an outstanding resistance to shocks which can arise prior or during installation and in operation.
Pipeworks exposed outdoor or in parking lots and technical premises could potentially be damaged, accidentally or deliberately.
PAM cast iron is robust and durable and less liable to break or crack than any other drainage material.
EXTREM 1 is a one component product, red mat colour.
It is available in 250 ml (ref 226788) and 500ml (ref 226962).
For indication the 500 ml tub covers the repair of 75 DN 100 cut ends in average.
These results indicate greater resistance to impacts and crushing, easier machining and cutting. This also means the products are easier to install on job sites.
Care means operation safety
To avoid premature and costly repairs causing significant disturbance in buildings operation, it is accepted that drainage pipe systems should be long lasting.
In Hong Kong, the pipe systems installed outdoor are over painted with an anti-rust paint prior to their installation. The acrylic paint on the pipes is a primer which for outdoor exposures had to be over painted. It has been selected so that any alkyd resin, or glycerophtalic paint dedicated to metal care and complying with specific local requirements can be used.
Prior to over painting, the pipes should be gently rubbed down with a suitable abrasive paper, in order to provide a good adhesion and to gently remove possible zinc salts. This action enhances the quality of finish coating.
Reminder: To efficiently fight corrosion, where pipes are cut on site, ends shall be cut clean and square with burrs removed and then re-coated with the adequate touch-up paints EXTREM 1, or other repair products recommended by Saint-Gobain PAM.

The PAM ranges, being assembled and anchored, have successfully passed a high-pressure jetting test: cleaning pressure of 120 bar from the pump, which means 100 bar at the nozzle outlet, without leakage or misalignment.
