Attendance•How can you
help your• child maintain
an excellent attendance
record?
Ways for parents to encourageattendance:
1. Establish GOOD ATTENDANCE HABITS - little ones look to you as a role model, show them its important.
2. Start now - little ones are easier to influence3. Regularly check your child's absence with your own record.4. Talk regularly with your child about school and how they
feel about it. They are more likely to want to attend and learn if they feel supported and anxieties listened to.
Every school day counts
365 Days in a Year 190 School Days in Total Absence
100% attendance 190 days 0
95% attendance 180 days 2 weeks
90% attendance 171 days 4 weeks
85% attendance 161 days 6 weeks
80% attendance 152 days More than half a term
75% attendance 143 days 9 + weeks
Although being absent cannot always be helped as we all become ill from time to time, please take a look at the table below to show you exactly what your child could be missing.
Every Minute Counts • As well as being absent, lateness also has an impact on
your child’s development; please look at the table below.• Lateness = lost learning• (Figures below are calculated over a school year)
5 minutes late each day 3 days lost
10 minutes late each day 6.5 days lost
15 minutes late each day 10 days lost
20 minutes late each day 13 days lost
30 minutes late each day 19 days lost
Ways to encourage good attendance
Phone us as soon as possible to tell us why your child is absent, and when you expect them to return. Putting the school number in your phone can save you time.Only grant days at home for genuine illness. (you will know! Weakness now = problems laterArrange for a friend to take your child to school if a sibling is sick… its not fair to prevent a well child from learning.Avoid taking holidays in school time.
Ways to encourage good attendance
Know routines of the school day to avoid issues, e.g. have they got their PE kit? Help your child get everything ready the night before e.g. uniform, reading bookEstablish a good bedtime routine, so your child can sleep well, get enough sleep and make mornings less of a struggle!PRAISE AND REWARD GOOD ATTENDANCE: even small successes, e.g. getting ready quickly, even if resisting going to school.
Other tips to help secure good attendance
If there is a problem with your child’s attendance, talkcalmly to your child and listen to the explanation. There is always an explanation. It may not impress you, but it is important enough to them to be putting them off school.Pursuing the reason for not wanting to attendance is important.Talk to us -we maybe able to help and support you and your child. You are not alone, we can work together to find solutions so that little problems don’t become BIG ones.Allow plenty of time to travel to school.
Other tips to help secure good attendance
Set an alarm clock – rushing is unsettlingBe particularly watchful and supportive in the run up to tests and be aware of friendship groups.Find out if there is a school breakfast club to go to.Help your child catch up with missed work, missed day doesn‘t mean missed work.Remember PRAISE for good attendance.
Holidays
Greenwich Education Authority advises schools that it is not acceptable to take holidays in term time and that they should not be authorised. We understand that there may be an occasion when this is unavoidable but, this should be the exception, rather than the rule. Taking your child out of school in term time will have a detrimental impact on their education. A Penalty Notice Fine can be issued to parents who take their children out of school for holidays during term time.
If you have any queries, please do not hesitate to speak to a member of the Senior Leadership Team.
